A New Way to Keep Fruits and Veggies Fresh

-

Attending the Natural Products Expo East in Boston last week was like going trick-or-treating. The largest trade show of its kind on the East Coast, I carefully went from booth to booth scouring over 1,200 natural, organic, and healthy products to share with you EcoSalon readers. From vegetable-derived stainless steel cleaner to dill pickle-flavored dried peas, I was in natural nirvana, filling my bag with samples.

Today I’ll start with the Healthy Harvest Freshness Extender, an egg-shaped plastic container that houses zeolites – in this case a pure form of volcanic ash – that slows down the ripening process by removing ethylene from produce. Ethylene, a natural plant hormone, initiates and accelerates the ripening of fruit and vegetables, then causes them to deteriorate. By lowering surrounding level of ethylene, the shelf life of produce is extended.

Healthy Harvest has made the results of their independent study available in a white paper so those interested can learn about the naturally occurring chemical reactions in the ripening process and how zeolites work. The Healthy Harvest Freshness Extender can be found in numerous supermarkets or can be ordered online.

Don’t throw your food away – keep it fresh!
