Take one glimpse around your home, and you’ll realize that cotton is everywhere: in your clothes, bedding, curtains, tablecloths…the list goes on. But, did you know that this resource is often grown in disadvantaged countries that still rely on toxic pesticides?
Agrocel Industries was appalled to learn that these dangerous pollutants cause approximately 20,000 human deaths every year, and set out to free these cotton farmers from their exposure to petrochemicals. Members introduced organic agricultural methods and taught farmers how to solve their pest problem with natural alternatives like chili and garlic. In addition, this cooperative ensures that workers experience improved living conditions with fair wages (men and women are paid equally, which is uncommon in this region), a pension and health insurance. Agrocel cotton products are available at Gossypium.
Editor’s note: Worldwide, cotton is a heavily treated crop, and workers around the world are exposed to excessive amounts of dangerous chemicals. One of the most important things you can do for yourself, the planet and others is to insist on organic cotton products. In this case, “organic” is not a meaningless marketing term used by some greenwashing agribusiness; it can mean the difference between life and death for another person on this planet. We urge you always to seek out organic cotton, and encourage others to do the same.
