Feed the World (and Your Mind)

-

One day John Breen, a computer programmer from Bloomington, Indiana, was helping his son study for the SATs and created an interactive quiz with 10,000 vocabulary words. Having already built The Hunger Site in 1999, a for-profit that donates revenue to select charities, Breen saw the potential of using his vocabulary teaching tool to generate food for undernourished countries and in October 2007 launched Free Rice, which distributes rice via the United Nations World Food Programme.

Among some of the places the rice has been donated is Bangladesh, to feed 27,000 refugees from Myanmar for two weeks; Cambodia, to provide four kilogram take home rations for two months to 13,500 pregnant and nursing women; Uganda, to feed 66,000 school children for a week; Nepal, to feed over 108,000 Bhutanese refugees for three days, and Bhutan, to feed 41,000 children for 8 days.
