Yo! Yo!

We all got a major wake-up call last year about imported plastic toys for kids. They’re made from non-renewable oil, there’s a risk of lead or other contaminants, and some plastics may have cumulative harmful effects when ingested - and we know those toys are going in tiny mouths.

Keep plastic toys to a minimum and choose sustainable and healthy alternatives. I fell in love with these quirky fair trade yo-yo dolls made by South American artisans, sold by SpoonSisters ($24 each). Many of us learned to use a needle and thread making cloth yo-yos, so they have a comfortable nostalgic feel, and they’re silly, colorful and cuddly. I may just need one for myself! If you have fond memories of making yo-yos and want to try it again yourself, or teach your kids, try this tutorial from designer Heather Bailey.
