Twig Terrariums is forcing us to consider our lives in miniature.

Michelle Inciarrano and Katy Maslow, two old friends, create itty bitty, mini moments in time. Mini moss terrariums, to be specific, and “other small worlds” stuffed into antique, vintage and apothecary jars, occasionally science glass and kitchenware, and other odd glass objects they come across.

Their Brooklyn-based company, Twig Terrariums, specializes in miniaturizing scenes, be it a walk through a pastoral highland or punk rockers tagging a Lower East Side tenement.

They “go mossing” and “terraring” on the weekend (Twig-speak for moss and glass hunting), and can create just about any city or landscape request thrown at them. A grandmother recently came the pair and asked them to immortalize her granddaughter in a terrarium doing her two favorite things: playing the violin and hula-hooping, at the same time.

Most of their other clientele are urbanites with nary a piece of grass to their name, craving, as Michelle puts it, “their own little green world.”

“Our terrarium’s give urban dwellers some much needed nature,” she adds, “and space without having to drive.”

Michelle and Katy work with a dozen varieties of moss, plants and succulents, all easy to maintain greenery. Under a powerful magnifying glass, they style each inch-tall figurine to look like their life-sized subjects in various states of rustication, hiking, mountain climbing, hula-hooping – even mugging.

“They want to see themselves in their little worlds,” Katy explains. If only to retrace what went wrong in Central Park that one fine morning.”

Twig Terrariums pride themselves on being a green company, using vintage glass and upcycling whenever possible or working with a local glassblower for custom projects. Katy and Michelle have a book coming out in 2012, which will contain a glossary of all the terms a DIY terrarist should know, a how-to, and photos.

“When we first started making terrariums, they took over our homes,” Michelle warns of the addictive hobby turned career. “Basically, we want everyone to bring our worlds into theirs.”

And why not? They’re lovelier than a snapshot and sustainable enough for the brownest thumbs among us.

Prices start around $25 and can go up into the hundreds.

How a charity raises big bucks auctioning frocks reconstructed by cutting edge designers.

It begins with a few yards of salvaged plum fabric and black tulle gathered by St. Vincent de Paul Society. It ends in a fanciful evening gown paraded on a catwalk amid flashing cameras and cooing from those who appreciate fashion as three-dimensional art. Bidders are informed the embellished frock, called Galatea at Twilight, was conceived by Cari Borja, and is a suggested size 4-8. They are cajoled to cough up cash to add the slinky fantasy to their wardrobe, thereby aiding victims of homelessness and poverty served by the San Francisco charity. Warmed up by sauvignon blanc and gourmet nibbles, the audience bites. That’s how Discarded to Divine rolls. Recycled fashions, renewed lives.

This much-anticipated annual event is such a heightened happening that the parking service controlling the ticket holders resembles a secret service militia supervised by former high school female gym teachers, standing by to interrogate ticket holders as they pull into the parking lot at St. Mary’s Cathedral. “What is your business here?” they bark, checking to see if you garnered a spot on their coveted list for courtesy parking, or if you should be directed to a spot in the hinterlands. Meantime, the wind is blowing like a Texas tornado and you’re just aching to get inside and preview the silent auction items that always get snapped up quickly. I don’t think New York Fashion Week is this tight.

Once inside, the show doesn’t disappoint. A large room with dozens of one-of-a-kind custom design student silhouettes on dress forms seem to beckon the seasoned eye, which marvels at the tailoring and fanciful embellishments – a ’60s white woolen Audrey shift with back panels on each shoulder displaying embroidered peacock quills or a delightful tunic featuring panels of woven textiles in the season’s pet shades of blush and salmon with a matching woolen shrug.

The silent auction showcases more of the fun and offbeat – at times even crafty party wear and accessories that let attendees walk away with an expertly tailored, re-purposed dress for $75 – a dress with a great back story, not plucked from the rack of a department store but won via clever bidding tactics (be the last one on the list when they stop the silent auction and appetizers and direct you inside for the live show).

The live auction is an opportunity for more sophisticated formal, day and outerwear, and a chance to show what lesser known Bay Area visionaries can stitch: a stunning blue taffeta bodice dress by costumer Ulises Alcala made from a silk jacket; a gray pea coat by the Fashion Institute of Design’s Janice Paredes with an oversight yellow houndstooth trim that sprung from a woman’s blazer; a stunning Boho embellished folk coat by Olga Shor tweaked from upholstery fabric and window panels; a belted oversize purple ash woman’s coat by gr. Dano in a paisley pattern with dolman sleeves which required eight hours of hand dipping to achieve the ombre technique; and a truly divine Aphrodite Greeks style asymmetrical chiffon dress with a belt and detachable fur collar.

As with a familiar Project Runway plot line, the designers were instructed to take their inspiration from the collection of art at the De Young Museum – the location of a preview party for the fashion event – which raised more than $100 thousand for the cause. The fact that the crowd was curious to learn about the discarded part – the forgotten fabrics breathing life into the garments – proves there are plenty of good textiles to go around without ever having to produce new weaves in a factory again. We are titillated by seeing something old become something new. Perhaps the design world will take note of this annual event and rummage through the lost pile to pull treasures for their own collections.

Artist Michel de Broin had another idea.
A quirky yet elegant re-imagining of the chair.

Ah, the mullet. Well-groomed and refined on top, a little wild on bottom. Ever heard of a furniture mullet? While I would rarely (all right, never) recommend a mullet to frame your face, these lovely creations are as unexpected as a mullet, but with a sense of creativity and sophistication. Let the mullet lust begin.

Based in Strasbourg, France, Sonia Verguet built twenty different chairs created by combining a simple wooden box and recycled flea market furniture. Verguet calls her labor ‘My Family’. Each piece is a juxtaposition of unique components and a wood block – the culmination of all twenty pieces is varied and diverse, just like a family.

Really, has a mullet ever looked so good? The top is intricate and elegant, anchored by the unexpected rigid wooden base. I now long for an entire family of mullet chairs to gather round my dining table (there’s a sentence I never thought I’d use).

One more furniture mullet for you to ponder hails from Uhuru. The Standard Chair is anything but standard. The hand-carved chair backs were rescued from a manufacturing company that went out of business. The Louis the XVI wooden backs are embellished with steel plate seats and front legs. An industrial aluminum mesh serves as the chair back ‘upholstery’. If my love of the Standard isn’t enough to entice you, maybe knowing the chair was recently added to the Brooklyn Museum of Art’s permanent collection will sway your opinion. Add custom sizes and finishes (each creation is hand built to order) to the list of benefits and choose a low VOC lacquer of your choice. I can only hope you’ll invite me over to sit on your new mullet (another sentence I never thought I’d use).

Amsterdam International Fashion Week (AIFW) and the Dutch ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV) launched the Green Fashion Competition this past week for the International Year of Biodiversity. The competition, which consisted of eight designers hailing from all over the world and picked from over 180 participants included sustainable sweetheart and New York City mover and shaker Eliza Starbuck. Starbuck, who you might know from the famed Uniform Project and You Bright Young Things, was there to promote biodiversity with her own NYC spin.

While the Green Fashion Competition is a challenge for seasoned entrepreneurs in the fashion industry like Starbuck, each participant was asked to provide a vision of what the future of fashion could look like while sustaining biodiversity.

EcoSalon was fortunate enough to catch Starbuck and have her answer some questions before the competition finale yesterday and a quick follow up after. Starbuck, although disappointed with her third place win, says she feels very good about the overall experience.

“The competition was fiercely steep but I think we’d all agree that the first prize winner deserved to win. The second prize however might be questioned. Granted they were a shoe company, but I thought sending the models down the runway naked was taking eco fashion a bit far!”

So as a designer, how does she intend to promote biodiversity?

Starbuck says via email from Amsterdam: “I promote bio-diversity by promoting diversity in style and slow fashion practices. That may seem like a stretch, but just imagine a world where everyone’s style is individualized! All things made local, upcycled, recycled, custom, and one offs would be ideal for supporting biodiversity because it would support slow fashion. So to support that vision I produce multifunctional clothes that encourage my customers to play with their personal style and to buy less. I also produce locally, in New York City, and I use materials made of renewable materials, recycled accessories, or materials salvaged from the local fashion industry run off. I also managed to use all of the scraps in the garment’s under structures, making these zero wastage looks.”

While her now well worn black frock has become a wardrobe staple with Bright Young Things everywhere, Starbuck says for this competition she’s presenting some new looks that represent BYT’s “heirloom” fashion.

“This capsule is a bit dressier for the “Lady of the 21st Century”. The trick will be that the two runway looks I’m presenting are actually the same three items in different colors, but all of the items will be styled so drastically different that to the average viewer it will appear as six items. Of course I’ll be wearing my infamous LBD as my travel item of choice,” says Starbuck.

While the immediate prediction for Starbuck’s fashion will most certainly always include her LBD, she says the future is all about diversity.

“I think the mass produced look of the second half of the 20th Century is going to fade away like a boring memory. People are going to start coveting items that customize and differentiate their own style from others, which means a lot more people will be DIYing and searching out one of a kind items. Sure it sounds like an idealized dream now but with today’s resource limitations, social media info sharing, and the economic downturn, it could quickly become a reality,” says Starbuck.

(Side note: How could I not play these two against each other?)

I always feel sorry for celebrities come awards time. There is just as much emphasis put on their red carpet garb as their award nominations and with the Golden Globes this weekend, I realized I haven’t done enough for all the starlets.

So apologies go out specifically to Natalie Portman, Helena Bonham Carter, Nicole Kidman, Halle Berry and Livia Firth for not suggesting this before. With all of you in the limelight on Sunday, we should have thought of this earlier.

Next year, I’d like to host a DIY night for you at my place. All of you star-studded ladies could bring your old dresses and I’ll bring the garment racks and let’s just have an old fashioned trying on party – see what works for you that worked for another breast oozing beauty last year. I’ll also bring a tailor to make the modifications necessary, and lots of tape and jars of bedazzling items. After all, there’s no reason why you can’t reuse.

Natalie Portman at the 2010 Venice Film Festival, Image from Zimbio

Natalie, I could have modified so many vintage dresses for your Bjork style but naturally dyed (black) of course and messages tucked into feathers trailing off the back like “The dark side in Star Wars was nothing compared to my last gig,” “Making out with women in cabs is hot,” and “Honk if you love swans.” We could have even made a mean feather lipstick for you in collaboration with a natural cosmetics company? We didn’t think! I seriously hate myself. Please look amazing because you are going to win everything.

Helena, when I think of all the crazy shit you usually wear to awards shows we could have had a DIY fest with garter belts, netting and royal tapestries embellishing something subtle, like a pirates outfit to really mix things up. So if you do win supporting actress for your role as the Queen Mother in The King’s Speech, you could still retain that “what the hell am I wearing again?” vibe but with a sustainable spin.

God, please wear something normal because your role was so wonderful and you might just win.

No doubt it would have made us all feel a little messed up just looking at her.

Livia, who will be on her husband’s arm on the red carpet has surpassed my wildest dreams by recently upcycling her husband’s moth eaten suits for the Paris premier of The King’s Speech and spending all last year going eco.

What will she wear on Sunday? One can only hope something that ticks off her husband so he doesn’t have a real life stammering episode as he accepts his award for his completely owned performance as Prince Albert.

He just has to win.

The Third Wave Green concept we’ve introduced at EcoSalon means taking a hard look at the environmental movement’s sacred truths and considering whether or not they exclude diversity of thought and, most important, hold up to scrutiny. Not always an easy or comfortable task.

Deconstruction – or probing an argument’s veracity by exposing even its most counterintuitive contradictions – allows ideas to evolve and survive over time. This approach is invaluable to creating a “sustainable” Green movement – one that can withstand the most savage attacks by short-term-focused corporate interests (and their legislative, cultural and media puppets), as well as the defeating apathy of a green-weary populace. We’re starting with 10 common green assumptions many of us subscribe to, and asking: should we?

1. Assumption: Vegetarianism and veganism are pro-planet

Reality? There’s a monocrop where that rainforest used to be

It’s true that consuming less meat is a sound way to help lessen your carbon footprint; but like most assumptions, the underlying truth is more complex. A hamburger may be worse than a Hummer (or so the oft-repeated refrain goes), but the mock-meat-processed-from-a-monocrop-in-Myanmar style of vegetarianism is no golden nugget of eco goodness. Better to eat ethically-produced meat on rare occasions as flexitarians do than abstain from the steak but make heavily processed (and unhealthy) faux meats a cornerstone of your diet. Further complicating things, there are numerous studies showing that what’s really sustainable is efficiency, and in some cases, that means meat production over other types of product manufacture – even vegetables. And then of course, there’s the fact that even a truck driving, Big Mac chomping “Average Joe” has a lighter carbon footprint, on balance, than a green-leaning parent raising American offspring.

2. Assumption: Vegan fashion is good; fur is murder

Reality? Dressing up the truth and let’s talk leather

A world without fur makes sense to many. But is wearing leather any different? How many advocates for banning fur eat meat or don leather shoes or coats? Is killing an animal for its hide ever okay? If so, when? Can someone who does still be Green? Fur is viscerally offensive to many – but by that same token, shouldn’t we recoil at all the boots made for walking? Further, how exactly did vegan get lumped in with green fashion when many vegan products are made of toxic synthetics derived from fossil fuels? If a plastic (vegan) jacket is really better for the planet than a wool one, let’s ask if it’s because it is truly more sustainable in terms of the resources required to make it. Or is it just more efficient today, in our current context of an ultimately unsustainable, but temporarily efficient and cheap, system?

3. Assumption: Environmental protection is the key to our survival

Reality? Go GINK (Green Inclinations, No Kids) or go home

Or: It’s not the hamburgers and Hummers, stupid, it’s the kids. While the Green movement focuses on wildlife habitats, pollution and greenhouse gas reductions, and other ways to save the planet, are its efforts moot if it fails on the population challenge? It’s easy to create a epic battle in our minds that pits us against our helpless environment. But might the real battle not involve the environment at all? Perhaps George Carlin was right when he said that if we get to be too irritating, “the planet will shake us off like a bad case of fleas.” Might our existence be merely a tick on the planet’s back and if we don’t tread a lot more lightly – i.e., multiply ourselves in a sustainable way – we don’t stand a chance with our to-date agreeable host, environmentalism or no environmentalism.

4. Assumption: Globalization hurts the little guy

Reality? Globalization helps the little guy

Those bandanna-masked guys on the street breaking the windows of Starbucks and Nike shops got their stories straight, right? If they’re anti-The Man, they must be green. Consider for moment what proponents of free trade and globalization are saying: global economic growth, job creation, lowers prices for consumers, capital and technology infusion into poor countries, giving them development opportunity. How about a more transparent global business infrastructure that could promote human rights? Sound like some pretty green motivations? Maybe throwing stones first and asking questions later isn’t such a great idea.

5. Assumption: Locavore, Locavore, Locavore

Reality? Eat global.

Green food comes from where it comes from. If a “place” is highly specialized to make a food in an efficient, healthy and earth-friendly way, might it be better to buy from that source rather than buying the local resource-intensive butter from down the street? We tend to assume that environmentally friendly is somehow akin to being homespun or even quaint, but might our journey here be contingent on creating our own efficiencies, using our ubiquitousness to lessen the load on Spaceship Earth?

6. Assumption: Recycling. Of course.

Reality? Follow the money – and the resource suck

Companies profiting from the practice won’t tell you, and few will acknowledge that recycling is expensive, generates pollutants and is in itself a resource drain. Are there better ways to think about what we do with our used goods and trash – like worrying less about what we do with what we consume and more about simply consuming less? After all, there’s an answer to the taking out the trash problem: Stop making so much trash. This possible truth says forget the red herring cry of “recycle” and tell all who would listen: reduce!

7. Assumption: Organic. Always. Period.

Reality? Caution: Mad Men at work

In some grocery store aisles it’s common now see more “official” organic foods than the evil and bad “non-organics” that we’ve consumed since the invention of, well, the invention. As one stands gazing at organic pop tarts, one might well ask two simple questions: First, what does organic mean? Second, even if I do get a functional answer to question 1, can I believe what I’m reading on the box? Then, as one leaves the store with a couple hundred dollars’ worth of organic stuff, a really big question should loom large: Has this facet of the Green movement been hopelessly co-opted by broad definitions, false advertising and “greenwashing.” Also part of this Organic deconstruction: What about the war on pesticides? How well does that fit in with global health and nutrition efforts? Would the elimination of such chemicals, called for some organic adherents, make us healthier – or cause global famine?

8. Assumption: The green stuff is the good stuff!

Reality? All stuff is stuff

From high-tech to the gadgets designed to make you life more ecologically friendly, we’re bombarded with claims – many truthful – that the stuff we buy, from mining to manufacturing to fulfillment processes, is Green as grass. But what does that mean? More stuff is just that, and even the “greenest” of it requires raw materials, transportation and other resources dedicated to get that product into your hands – before it’s dumped when you’re done with it. Does buying Green help as much as not buying at all?

Of course, others have taken on some of environmentalism’s ”sacred cows,” as Wired magazine did when it took a look a issues specific to global warming, including:

9. Assumption: No nukes is good nukes

Reality? An inevitable option

A surprising number of the ecologically friendly are advocating what they say is clean, green, safe and inevitable. Is the Green tent big enough for these folks who say this fossil fuel alternative is the right way to go?

10: Assumption: Made in China, made by the devil

Reality? A big green ally

The Russians were coming. So were the Japanese. And now, enter the Chinese bogeyman. The fact is there are green-reputable manufacturers in China, and many expect the massive global player to be a leader in green tech and practices going forward. Could the new evil empire be a source of progress rather than just soot?

Some controversy for your environmentally focused brain? This is good. We pose such “alternate realities” not to come down on one side or another of any of these important issues, but rather to point to the eyes-wide-open self examination that must be absorbed into the movement at large if it is to escape the margins and permeate our thinking on a truly meaningful level.

Third Wave Green means not being afraid to question the norms and approach environmentalism from a variety of viewpoints. What are yours?

Here in Northern California we’re quickly sliding into the rainy season. I can tell this as much from the “what, that was summer?” look on people’s faces as much as I can from the weather itself. So here comes the rain again and in the name of keeping our chins up, we give you Clean Rain – or, a good way to make use of the wet stuff beyond an excellent reason to bitch and moan.

Clean Rain is a rainwater harvesting system that that hooks up to your gutters. It uses simple technology to filter out junk, including a “Smart Sense First Flush” water diverter that keeps contaminants contained in the first runoff of water from the roof (dirt, dust, and ew stuff like bird droppings and dead/not-dead insects) from making your water-storage cut. After that first round, the device’s stainless steel mesh screening prevents mosquitoes, bugs and vermin from getting through. (‘Cause who wants vermin in their water?) The device can be installed with a hacksaw and a drill and fits all common downpipes. You can even paint the thing to match your house’s color scheme. Oh, and its materials are all recyclable.

Clean Rain is made by Aussie-based Rain Harvesting, so we gringos have to work our own metric conversions on the following Clean Rain spec: For every 1mm of rainfall per square meter of roof, you can collect 1 liter or rain.

What can you do with a bunch of clean rainwater? Aside from watering gardens (which dig rainwater best) or put into a pond (this is water), says EnviroGadget, “due to its cleanness it can also be used in a pool, or set to be stored in a large water storage tank for use in toilets or such devices.” (That said, I do wonder how clean my toilet water really needs to be.)

Not too long ago we told you about some ecologically friendly ways to go – literally, as in how to do away with that pretty corpse of yours in a manner that’s best for the environment. Some of those options were for those of you interested in the eco-ashes to eco-ashes route. But this begs the next question: What to do with those cindery remains? The Answer is clear (cue music”¦ no, really): Turn them into a record album for your loved ones to spin and spin and spin again – forever and ever! (Okay, maybe not so clear. But funky, though, huh?)

Meet And Vinyly, my vote-getter in the run-up-to-Halloween race for most macabre and inventive company. What these twisted, though seemingly respectful Brits do is take some or all of what you leave behind and press it into “a vinyl recording your family with cherish for generations.” Your last expression can include anything you like, such as a final personal message (your last will and testament, for example), your own “soundtrack,” or nothing at all – “simply press your ashes to hear your pops and crackles for the minimal approach.” (I wonder if you would need to buy rights to the music you use. Could you get sued? Would you care? What would an aggrieved record label do? Confiscate your record and, um, burn it?)

The basic package is for up to 30 discs and includes standard “R.I.V” cover artwork and record label with your name, birthday and deathday. You supply the audio and get someone to bring in your remaining remains (they require personal delivery, so make sure you leave a trip to London to some lucky pal in your will). You only get 12 minutes a side, so if you’re rushed for time, well… The cost? Basic starts at about $4,800. I know. Cold.

That said, if you’re willing to throw down about twice that fee, you can up your in by having National Portrait Galley award-winning artist James Hague paint your portrait with acrylic and ash (yes, yours) on canvas. Your album covers will then be made from limited edition prints of the original portrait. To do this, you can simply supply a photo or “arrange a one hour sitting with James, before you die.” (Lord, I love the English.)

Here’s how it works (and in this order, by the way.):

Confirm your location and the viability of these services in your area.

Identify a family member or chosen rep who will accompany you (your ashes) to the pressing.

Establish audio content and cover art.

Attend the mastering of your record.

Receive playable proof sample of your record and cover.

Die.

Get cremated.

Your family member or chosen rep books and attends the sprinkling and pressing of your records.

Your chosen recipients are sent details of where to collect their copy of your personal record.

Live on from beyond the groove.

In a recent e-mail exchange with And Vinyly’s “Undertaker,” Discovery News asked him how he came up with the album concept: “The idea came through personal considerations about the inevitable,” he said. -¦ I began to get glimmers that perhaps I wasn’t invincible after all. I saw a story on an American chap who had his ashes put into fireworks for his family to enjoy. I loved this idea. I began to see that death does need serious consideration, but that this could be done in a light-hearted way. Our concept provides immortality in sound.”

There are way too many silly puns on And Vinyly’s website to even begin to try to compete with them here for some clever close. I’ll just punt to their tagline: “Death to Vinyl.” Sounds like a plan.
