Tribal Style Treasures

I’m not entirely sure what to make of Mayan mythology that has the cosmic calendar coming to an end in 2012, but in the meantime, there’s work to be done. Poverty and lack of education and opportunity are probably greater threats to the people of Guatemala.

You can help by visiting the online shop at MayaWorks, where Mayan culture is alive and well and beautifully expressed in artisan-made accessories using vibrant color and traditional weaving techniques. Sales support economic development and education for girls and women through this nonprofit organization, a member of the Fair Trade Federation. You’ll find bags and beads, of course, along with unusual items like conference badgeholders, clerical stoles and Judaica, luggage tags, and tribally stylish eyeglass or cell phone cases. Many items are so reasonably priced that you can buy in bulk for gift bags, or organize a sale in your own community.
