Well i think this list has to be rethought of since there different people have different needs and you cant really generalize these things at 10 things we dont need.

Some things were made for special purposes. Like the automatics and the creams. Like models need those to continue being a model and the disabled need the automatics. Cheers :P

Actually, the bread machine is a real prize in our house--I use it to combine and raise the dough. I bake in the oven in a dutch oven for that european crust. Makes a lengthy chore into a short one and we have lots of fresh bread and I don't have to do so much cleaning up. I don't think the power to let it raise and mix in the bread machine is too much--I keep my thermostat turned down so far in the winter I have real problems getting it to raise on the counter.

Motion detectors are on our outside light in the driveway so it turns on when we pull in and lets us see our way to the door. But good article, just the same. My (gift) microwave died and we have not replaced it. Don't miss it too much because there is a great place for me to melt butter in front of oven vent.

Motion sensors might be good for some purposes but the automatic flushing toilets should really stop. It must waste so much water. Every time I'm in there, it seems to go off before I'm ready, not only annoying me but forcing me to flush twice.

I don't know what the stats are on the energy consumption of a microwave versus the stove top. But factor in the cost of manufacturing and disposing of the microwave and it doesn't look so good (IMO everyone needs a stove and the microwave is the extra, not vice versa). Also consider that owning a microwave encourages people to buy ready meals, which are again wasteful of energy by being heavily processed and packaged. It also means people are likely to use the microwave to defrost frozen food, whereas if they plan ahead they can just defrost passively in the fridge or on the counter with no extra energy consumption. So I agree with Katherine that it's more eco-friendly to do without. I'd rather save the counter space anyway.
