This is crazy, I completely DISAGREE. One of the best ways to reuse, re-purpose and recycle is to adopt an animal, this includes dogs. Humans throw things away everyday without thought, this includes our fury friends. I have had some of the least carbon foot print affected days of all time, just hanging out with my dog. Hundreds of thousands of dogs, cats and other animals are killed every day because they do not have homes. It is our responsibility as humans, not only to reduce our carbon foot print but to correct the wrongs that have become the affect of our mindless consumption. Love and respect for the planets includes respect toward other species.
It is also the responsibility of a dog owner to parent in a way that is green.
I urge you to reconsider this selfish idea.

You ignorant fool! God created Canines !. i believe the canine has more intelligence than you and your rediculous theory.
Think about it. He did not make canines for your stinkin thinkin to reason away!
Why dont you go do something intelligent for a change.
Our Bible tells us that in the end time, man shall destroy himself. Well guess what ! We have arrived!
Please, go read the Bible for the real anshers
Sometimes mans theories overshadows Biblical teachings.
Dont believe nothing you hear, and only half of what you see, especially from Tree Huggers. (IF GOD DONE IT, IT CANT BE BAD!)

Hi, do you have the information on what makes a dog unsustainable? I was waiting for it at the end as a comparison but the info never appeared? It is interesting to compare the different pets but we need the details on dogs carbon footprint to really make an informed choice. I assume a large portion is due to the amount of land that is used to produce dog food but there are alternatives. Any more information would be useful or the article remains incomplete.

We have a question for the author.
Is it greener to have a trapped bird, or fish, captured by man, than having a dog?
We chose dogs and they chose us to be forever companions, since ancient times.
We believe that trapping an animal is much worse for the environment.

The part about goldfish is ridiculous. One fancy tailed goldfish requires at minimum a 30 gallon aquarium. They are the dirtiest fish you can have, and if you were to keep one healthy in a small bowl, you would have to do daily water changes, which would amount to much more than a gallon a week.

If you are going to introduce an argument, i.e, "dogs are worse than SUVs" you need evidence to support your statement. Just because the Vales wrote a book upon the subject does not make them authorities in itself. Anything will get published these days if there is a market for it, take Twilight for instance.

Why are dogs worse than SUVs? Because they have a greater carbon footprint than other animals? There is nothing to explain or support your claim. All you do is state two insufficient sentences.

Life is what makes our planet special. To purpose that which is unique to our planet is not eco-friendly is contradictory. Isn't the whole reason we are concerned about the environment is to preserve life?

Furthermore, humans have the biggest "carbon footprint" and the biggest negative effect on the environment; we historically destroy land, habitats, and ecosystems for our own gain.

So maybe owning a canine is not as green as owning a couple of hamsters but really who cares? Shouldn't we be more concerned about the massive oil spill that is destroying the Gulf of Mexico and the impact on wildlife in the years to come? Or the popularity of non biodegradable plastic waterbottles? Or our reliance on non renewable resources? Really WE are the worse animal for the environment, maybe we should start there.

Hi ladies, thanks for your comments. The intent of the post was not to say you can't have or shouldn't have a dog - and we certainly didn't say anything about proposing to euthanize the dogs that are currently alive and need homes. But it IS true that there are pets that create less of a carbon impact than dogs, and it's a topic we believe to be worth honestly addressing. Technically, we don't "need" pets - that doesn't mean there aren't wonderful benefits to caring for a companion animal, and it doesn't mean there aren't lots of animals in need of homes. Certainly it's not a simplistic issue that can easily be resolved. We're not "proposing" anything - we're simply offering some alternative pet choices for people who don't want to get a new dog. If you have read other green blogs, you're surely aware that more ardent environmentalists think we shouldn't have any pets - or kids, or cars, or other creatures and possessions of modern life - period. Our position is that it's up to everyone to decide what's ethically and morally right for their own green lifestyle, and that includes pets. The author of the post even has a dog, as she points out. :)
