Sharing books recycles, saves $$$ and even gets people talking (either online via the websites you mentioned, or face-to-face with libraries or even strangers).

A love of reading, and a better read community can only be a good thing IMO.

I’ve also had good luck using library book sales as a local recycling service. The same book gets a few different owners, and the library gets a cut with each trade. I do appreciate your point about supporting authors, though–it’s worth considering when we choose titles.
