First of all I hate PETA for how childish they are, they wrote a letter to the American military getting mad at them for giving returning soldiers hot dogs, although I don't support the pointless war in Iraq I salute our boys and the American soldiers coming home, they risk their lives in the line of duty and PETA wants to slap them in the face by giving them veggie dogs, if PETA's efforts were put to something useful like feeding the starving children of Africa I would support them (as long as it wasn't vegetarian food), what PETA does is cowardly and stupid, animals are mistreated by major corporations, so are humans by governments personally i don't care how a cow or chicken feels when its in a McDonalds slaughter house when there are innocent starving children in the world and I will gladly kill a cow to feed them, all I see when I see PETA members is a bunch of people who are oversensitive pathetic morons who can't grasp reality.

PETA makes the mistake of thinking that creatures that has no concept of moral can have any moral significance. Moral is only relevant as a way for rationally thinking beings (which, as far as I know, only means humans) to co-exist peacefully, to mutual gain. Non-rational beings are not able to understand or follow any moral. All rational individuals gain on concepts like individual rights. Animal rights, on the other hand, negates individual rights, and should therefore not only be regarded as irrelevant to moral, but also dangerous to humanity.

Don't get me wrong though, I think that you should always treat animals as good as you can (to inflict pain just for fun is of course disturbingly wrong), but when you need to experiment on animals or use them as food, then you should not be hindered by "animal rights",

Thanks, Luanne. :)

I feel the same way. The publicity often serves a purpose and it clearly works - but I firmly believe that there are smarter, friendlier ways to get the point across. And by friendlier I mean "not pushing people into opposite corners and getting them all riled up". It's hard for people to work together when they're so far apart.

Plus, PETA really, really needs to shed its scary side. Human beings are animals too.

Great post, Mike. I'm ambivalent about PETA since it is able to get attention, which is hard to do in this world of animal testing and abuse. But like terrorism, the means don't always justify the ends, even if you are certain there is no other way to save lives. There often is another way.
