I was adamant about keeping my last name from the start, especially since I built my career around my byline. Husband did not feel the same way, so we compromised: I use his last name as my middle name, although legally my birth name remains unchanged. I'm still peeved he didn't integrate my last name into his though. Fair's fair.

 I
got a sweet deal. I felt really strongly about sharing (a college bf had parents who did the same in the 70s and I loved it) names as a
commitment to creating a new family (and a statement against the
patriarchy). A couple guys I really liked laughed at the idea and
that's how I knew they weren't for me, ...but
when I presented it to my husband he accepted happily. Marriage was
acquiescence enough to the patriarchy for me, I wasn't losing the name
of my birth. My kids will have to make their own decisions when the
time comes.
