it is amazing to me that it’s 2011 and abortion is still such a hot button. Also amazing to me is hearing some women that I have discussed this issue with make comments like – “I’m all for keeping abortion legal but I would NEVER…” Even these self-proclaimed pro-choice women are judgemental in a passive sort of way. Makes me wonder if things will ever really change.

I’m surprised by how little commentary there is about Private Practice and how frequently it has an abortion story.u00a0 I’m pretty pleased about it as an abortion provider.u00a0 It’s a complex issue and the writers portray it fairly well.u00a0 And I’m just happy to see it portrayed on mainstream TV in a complex way.

u00a0I keep watching Private Practice because of how often (every episode) they deal with some kind of moralizing about women’s reproductive choices…it really is fascinating to see how different decisions are portrayed, and how and which characters they have represent different viewpoints (rarely do they have an issue where everyone is on the same page).u00a0 Even though I would not be watching Private Practice if it were about a dermatologist office, I keep being drawn because I am so interested in how it portrays all kinds of women’s health choices.

Jack & Bobby had a character that had an abortion…and then she died in a tragic car accident, in like, the very next episode.u00a0 Then the series was cancelled shortly thereafter – but I was really shocked that they actually portrayed a young woman actually getting an abortion.

Degrassi featured one of the first teen abortions (positively!) and the episode was promptly edited to hell and back — the full episode has only recently been aired in the US.
