Hi,

Third world? I currently live in Juba, Sudan... and firmly believe to have food consciousness is the foundation to individual food security. Aquaculture, hydroponics and 'old fashioned' gardening in the soil are first steps to 'urban food security'. Harass your local city council to allow poultry in the back yard... plant vegetables instead of lawns... plant blueberry bushes instead of arborvitae, put strawberries in your flower pots... do something. it is good for your soul, your health.. and make one less trip to the supermarket a month....

I container garden. actually i have 4 large animal troughs that i plant in. that way i don't have to worry what is in the earth. I also keep fish..but just as pets. I hunt. I go fishing, I pick things from my garden. I knit, I sew, I crochet , I bake, can and store for the winter, and rarely do I have to buy stuff. I have friends who make soap. I have other friends that have sheep and chickens (hence the wool to knit) I am now a grandmother and have raised my own kids to be as eco friendly as possible. This is how I was raised, my children were raised, and hopefully my grandchildren..(at least one of them) will be raised. I can't imagine another way of life. BTW if I could and the town allowed I would have a chicken coop and laying hens. but maybe soon.

I love this idea. I don't see it as Third World at all, I would love to be more self sufficient and to know that the fish I eat is sustainable. Plus fish ponds are attractive to have in your garden - much more so than a chicken coop! It's not practical for me however since I don't have a yard and I'm not a homeowner.
