I’m with you, Annie. While our society’s relationship with mental illness and its dismal record around dealing with the issue should be called to the fore here, I don’t think that should be at the expense of (loudly) addressing the issues of gun access and hate speech. It would be a mistake, however, to allow the latter to drown out the former, which I think is an easy trap for us to fall into. I also think your point about violent hyperbole acting as “trigger” is an interesting one. Thanks!

This all rings true Scott. I have known friends with these unfortunate problems and they are misunderstood and at times do slip through the cracks (especially here in California).Thanks for pointing it out in a nice succinct way.

However, the political hate talk and vitriolic speak in our country has done a lot to provoke a few people with mental illness to have a very fueled obsession or “trigger.” Hate begets hate.

Can’t we all just get along?
