Sneaky ways to save money when you don’t have any.

It’s not easy to save money, especially when you’re totally broke-ass. But here’s the thing: In order to stop being broke, you need to save money. The good news is that it’s not as complicated as it sounds, and over time you can create quite the little nest egg for yourself. Even small changes can make a huge difference.

Here’s how to save money within your itty bitty budget:

1. Ask for lower interest rates

No, but seriously. According to Bankrate, a national survey found that 56 percent of consumers who called credit card companies and asked for a lower interest rate had positive results:

“A five-minute phone call to your credit card issuer could save you hundreds, even thousands, of dollars in interest charges. ‘There’s no incentive for them to lower your rate unless you call. The squeaky wheel gets the oil,’ says Brad Dakake, a consumer advocate with Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group.”

2. Keep your home organized

When your home is tidy, your entire life becomes more efficient: You’ll save time, since it won’t take you 20 minutes to find your other shoe. You’ll save money, since you won’t be buying things you think you’re out of, only to find you’ve got six months worth. You’ll also waste less across the board, which is a win for both you and the environment.

3. Make a game of it

Starting this week, deposit one dollar into your savings account. Next week, save two dollars. The following week, save three dollars, and so forth. One year from now, you’ll have a total of $1,378 in your emergency fund. Bam.

4. Shop with a list

When you go grocery shopping, bring a list of what you need to buy and stick to it. This tunnel vision approach to shopping will not only keep financial damage to a minimum, but help reduce food waste.

5. Deposit your paycheck into your savings

One of the reasons why we spend too much is because our cash is too easily accessible. If you’re struggling to save money, try depositing your paycheck into your savings account and only transfer money into your checking account as you need to pay bills. Since savings accounts only allow a certain number of withdrawals per month before service charges kick in, it can help you reduce frivolous spending. (And at the end of the month, the cash you don’t need is already in your savings.)

6. Treat your savings like a bill

Pay your savings account much like you would a bill, instead of treating it like an account you casually add money to when you can. Even depositing as little as five dollars per paycheck can go a long way toward building a solid emergency fund.

7. Cut the cord

You can save hundreds of dollars a year by cancelling your cable subscription. Just imagine not having to pay for duplicate or foreign channels anymore! Best of all, you can subscribe to services like Hulu Plus or Netflix to keep tabs on your fave shows without breaking the bank.

8. Use your credit card to your advantage

There are plenty of credit cards out there that allow you to earn points, which are then converted into cash. Since you’re going to be paying bills and buying groceries anyway, charge them to your card and use the extra earnings on a rainy day or in an emergency. You know, just remember to pay your card off every month.

9. Make more money

Many of us are so focused on how to cut costs (and often do so by sacrificing and denying ourselves) that we completely ignore the fact that there’s another side to the coin: Making more money. Instead of spending all of your time on new ways to deprive yourself, spend half thinking about new ways to save money, and half thinking about ways to earn more. When you become too strict with yourself, that’s when regretful splurges happen. (In fact, “Regretful Splurges” will probably be the name of my autobiography.)

Meet Athena, the snazzy wearable that’s going to stop violence against women.

There are plenty of moments in life when your safety’s put into question—walking home in the dark, waiting for your ride to show, or getting separated from your sig-o during a trip. And while there are plenty of ways to feel safe, they usually involve changing your lifestyle in ways that quash your fears, but limit your opportunities.

According to the UN, one in three women experience physical or sexual violence, and according to The Boston Globe, reports of campus sexual assaults have increased by 40 percent. (Not cool universe, not cool at all.) Luckily, a new wearable aims to change all that: Athena is described as “smart, fashionable jewelry” specifically designed to stop violence against women.

This sleek wearable is the size of a half dollar and comes in three colors: timeless black, antique silver, and rose gold. It’s designed to be worn around your neck like a pendant, or you can attach it to your clothing or purse using a magnetic clasp. Athena has been carefully crafted to make sure you don’t trigger the alarm by accident. Bonus: The device only weighs an ounce!

The magnetic clip itself is equipped with Bluetooth and an activation button. Pressing the button for three seconds triggers Alarm Mode, which produces an 85-decibel pulsating alarm and flashing LED lights. Athena also syncs with a smartphone app that sends text messages to your emergency contacts to let them know you’re in danger and exactly where you are. Being that the alarm wouldn’t be the best approach for every scenario, pressing the button three times triggers Silent Mode, which won’t sound the alarm, but will still notify your loved ones that you’re in trouble.

ROAR, the company behind Athena, has big plans for this product, including a feature that would allow an automated 911 call to be placed when the button is pressed. As the technology evolves, the company hopes to embed the device directly into items like clothing, footwear, and phone cases for even greater flexibility.

“We don’t want to just put a bandaid on the problem,” the company writes on its Indiegogo page. “In addition to the jewelry, we are committed to getting to the root causes of these attacks. That’s why for every Athena device purchased, we are investing a percentage of proceeds into non-profits that are teaching young boys and young girls about empathy and healthy relationships. Programs like these have been shown to reduce violence in adulthood.”

To make this a reality, ROAR has partnered with The One Love Foundation, where 10 percent of the proceeds from the company’s Indiegogo campaign will go towards raising awareness about the warning signs of abuse and helping end relationship violence. And thanks to its one-for-one model, for every Athena device purchased, one will be donated to a woman in need.

Ironically, ROAR’s ultimate goal is to make the Athena device obsolete one day: “Our team is dedicated to creating a world where everyone can live their lives boldly and without fear.” Clearly, the company’s mission to stop violence against women is one many of us share, because its goal to raise $40,000 was met and then some: So far, ROAR has raised over $270,000 through their Indiegogo campaign, with the first batch of Athena devices to be shipped out in May 2016. Girl power!

If you’re crazy in love, a new study suggests expressing yourself via email is the way to go.

There’s a new romantic gesture on the block that just might tug at your phone-hating heartstrings: According to a new study published in the journal Computers in Human Behavior, sending an email can be more effective in expressing how in love you are than leaving a voicemail (no matter how adorable).

Previous research (and lectures from the family) have suggested the opposite is true—that voicemail is a more intimate way to connect with someone, and that sending emails and texts are “cold” forms of communication that you can’t properly convey emotion with.

To understand how we respond emotionally to emails, co-authors Alan R. Dennis and Taylor M. Wells worked with 72 college-age participants and tracked their psychophysiological responses. Responses were tracked by placing skin sensors on the participants’ faces, which measured muscle movement linked to positive and negative emotion, and on their feet to measure arousal. Each participant was randomly assigned to do voicemail or email first, and produce a utilitarian or romantic message first.

They found that people who sent romantic emails were more emotionally aroused and used stronger and more thoughtful language than those who left voicemails.

“When writing romantic emails, senders consciously or subconsciously added more positive content to their messages, perhaps to compensate for the medium’s inability to convey vocal tone,” Dennis and Wells wrote in the paper.

“Email enables senders to modify the content as messages are composed to ensure they are crafted to the needs of the situation. Voicemail lacks this feature,” they continued. “A sender records a voicemail in a single take, and it can be sent or discarded and re-recorded, but not edited. Thus senders engage with email messages longer and may think about the task more deeply than when leaving voicemails. This extra processing may increase arousal.”

No difference was detected in how men and women reacted, and the team found that even with utilitarian messages, email aroused more psychophysiological responses than voicemail. The results counter media naturalness theory, the commonly held belief that suggests the further we get away from face-to-face interaction, the less effective communicating becomes.

“In this case, we found people adapted,” Dennis said in a statement. “Email’s been in the popular consciousness since the 1990s, and if you look at the new generation of millennials, and that’s who we studied, they’ve grown up with email and text messaging. So it may not be as unnatural a medium as we at first thought.

“There’s a lot of theory that says email and other text communications don’t really work very well,” Dennis added. “We should probably go back and reconsider a lot of the stereotypical assumptions that we hold about email and text messaging that may not hold true when we take a deeper look at how people react physiologically.”

In-laws: Can’t live with them… pass the vodka.

When it comes to your in-laws, the fact that there’s no escaping them (like, ever) can be an overwhelming concept to grasp. I mean, there are times when you can barely tolerate your own family, and now you have another set of parents, sisters, and brothers to contend with who have enough emotional baggage to fill a Barney’s.

Since it’d be nice to survive at least one holiday without severely damaging your liver, here are five ways to make time with your in-laws feel a little bit easier:

1. Set rules with your sig-o

After all, you’re in this together. You both had a certain lifestyle before you got hitched, and preferences you want to maintain as a twosome. For example, if you can’t stand it when the fam shows up uninvited, make it a point that they have to call and make plans first. The key to each rule is to establish them with both his side of the family and your own. That way everyone’s on the same page, and you can both keep (what’s left of) your sanity in tact.

2. Accept them for exactly who they are

This doesn’t just happen with in-laws, but it happens especially with in-laws: When people we care about aren’t living their lives the way we feel they “should” be, many of us don’t come right out with it. Instead, we let the awkward tension build to unbearable levels. If you want your in-laws to accept you and your marriage as is, then you have to do the same with how they live their lives. Try not to be too critical—or defensive—as a way to thaw the ice.

3. Keep your relationship out of it

When you’re having a tiff with a relative-in-law, it’s easy to forget that the conflict could put your guy in a sticky, lose/lose situation. He has a certain amount of loyalty to both of you, so make sure when you talk to him about it that you do so in a way that doesn’t drag him in the middle. For example, explain to him how you feel, and ask him the best way to deal with the situation. Being that he knows them super well, it’s a proactive way to be heard but also deal with the sitch like a grown-up.

4. Focus on what you have in common

No matter how you really feel about them, you can be civil for the sake of your guy. (No, but seriously.) One great way to ease the tension is to focus on what you have in common. You can ask them in-depth questions about topics you share an interest in, and keep them talking for days. Being a good listener isn’t just a good way to charm them, but by saying less, you’re less likely to get into shit.

5. Admit when you can’t hack it

Hey, life is crazy busy/hectic/stressful. It’s better to sit a visit out with your in-laws when you just can’t even than spend time with them begrudgingly. Besides, not only will your guy enjoy the one-on-one time with them, but there will be times when he needs a breather from your fam too, which is totally okay—more vodka for you.

The best highlights for dark brown hair, revealed.

As every woman with dark hair knows, there’s nothing more thankless than highlighting your hair, only to find it looks exactly the same. (Kidding. Sort of.) While dark brown strands are notoriously hard to highlight, it’s not impossible—you know, as long as you follow a few simple rules. No biggie, right?

First, make sure to only go a few shades lighter than your hair color. Too much contrast between your highlights and your natural color will give your hair that not-so-sought-after striped look. If you want to go super bold and make a statement, a professional stylist can make sure your tresses look edgy with a side of dayuuum. Otherwise, stick to subtler shades that give your hair dimension.

If you’re taking a DIY approach, choose a highlighting kit that’s labeled for your starting point, as opposed to your desired highlight hue, since the results will vary depending on your base color. (For example, you’ll want to find a kit that says “for brown hair” instead of “blonde highlights.”) As someone who once—okay, twice—unintentionally dyed her hair orange, just trust me.

Finally, don’t skip the strand test. Brown hair lifts in stages: Brown, red, orange, then yellow, and the line between beautiful caramel highlights and pylon orange is very, very, fine. Simply follow the kit’s test instructions, and if you like how your strands turn out, you can use that tested time on the rest of your hair. To go lighter, just reapply for another five minutes.

Here are 4 best highlights for dark brown hair that’ll look stunning:

1. Caramel

By incorporating shades of caramel, your dark brown hair will come to life with plenty of dimension and sheen. The trick is to use two or three different shades to create a more natural (and stunning!) effect.

2. Copper

Try adding copper highlights to the inside layer of your hair so they gently pop through for that extra layer of dimension. Bonus: You won’t have to worry about the whole roots thing.

3. Red

Adding warm red tones to your hair are a fabulous contrast—especially if you find brown hair to be a total snore. That said, reds are really challenging to maintain, so make sure to use hair products that keep that sheen… well, visible, for as long as possible.

4. Blonde

Dark blonde highlights are a great way to lighten your hair without going overboard. To avoid a streaky look, try applying your highlights to wet hair, which can help give them a softer, more sun-kissed look.

What do you think are the best highlights for dark brown hair?

Signs he cares that are just as important as the whole saying “I love you” thing.

It’s easy to understand why his lack of dropping the l-bomb makes you want to drop the f-bomb, but if there’s one thing we’re all familiar with, it’s how hard it is to tell someone how you feel (even when it’s obvious they feel the same way). I know that guys get a lot of flak for their lack of communicating, but to me how he acts is a lot more important than what he says.

I mean, what’s the point of him saying, “I love you,” or the age-old classic, “Everything’s going to be fine,” if he’s not going to back up his words with… well, proof? I’d rather be with a guy who doesn’t gush about his feelings but who’s got your back when the chips are down, as opposed to one who says things will be fine, but leaves the actual achieving it part to you.

		-->

Here are 9 sneaky signs he cares that don’t involve words or empty promises:

1. He speaks up

He respects what you have to say, but isn’t afraid to challenge you—not because he’s a jerk, but because he knows that agreeing with everything you say or saying exactly what you want to hear is not the way to win you over. He wants you to know the real him, which is hawt.

2. He sits or stands close to you

When you’re out together, he doesn’t try to create distance or give off the impression that you’re not together. Instead, he sits close to you or makes an effort to stand by you—and when mingling at parties, he makes a point to check in for a quick smooch.

3. He remembers the little things

He remembers things you’ve said to him in the past that are important to you, which means you’re important to him.

4. He texts you just because

We’ve pretty much established that guys aren’t into texting—so when he sends you a cute text or a funny pic, it’s pretty special.

5. He tries to earn your pet’s approval

If he wasn’t planning on sticking around, he wouldn’t try so hard to impress Fluffy to ensure she’s not going to shank him in his sleep.

6. He includes you in his hobbies

Dudes love their hobbies, so if he wants you to join in and share those activities with him, it’s a good sign that he cares about you.

7. He’s not fussy about what you do together

Grocery shopping, laundry, party planning—whatever it is, he’s down. He understands that doing everyday things together are just as important as fancy dates and exotic vacays.

8. He goes to events he’d rather not go to just because you’re going

Of course he doesn’t want to go to your co-worker’s sister’s daughters’s bat mitzvah, but he’ll go just to spend more time with you. Plus, he knows you’d do the same for him.

9. He gives you space

He enjoys spending time with you, but doesn’t flip out when you want to go out with the girls or take some alone time after a bananas day at work. A guy that gives you the space to breathe is totally a keeper.

Test yourself for common STDs from the comfort of your own home.

Fans of nookie already know the importance of getting tested on the regular for STDs, especially since as many as 80 percent of people carrying a sexually transmitted infection may not show symptoms. (Cue “Psycho Strings.”) But no matter how health conscious you are, it’s easy to let trips to the clinic fall by the wayside—you know, since they’re a total drag.

Fortunately, you can now test yourself for common STDs at home (such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, and HIV) with myLAB Box: It’s the first online STD home testing service that’s available in all 50 states, and offers the same accuracy as in-office tests for half the price.

    });

“STD testing has historically been riddled with high costs, inefficiencies and a sub-par customer experience which fueled our resolve to transform it,” Lora Ivanova, co-founder and CMO of myLAB Box, said in a statement. “Our motto, ‘Safe is Sexy,’ reiterates our mission to help people feel a sense of empowerment from making proactive choices about their own sexual health. Getting tested should be an easy, repeatable process. myLAB Box’s online experience is a vital step to better healthcare to anyone in the United States.”

The kits range in price from $79 to $189, depending on if you’re testing for more than one STD, and can be self-administered in as little as five minutes. Simply order a kit from the myLAB Box website, which will be sent to you in uber-discreet packaging, and mail back a small urine, swab, or blood prick sample in the self-addressed envelope provided. You’ll receive your lab-certified results back electronically in a matter of days.

In the event of a positive result, myLAB Box has trained STD counselors on standby to provide guidance and explain potential treatment options. Obvi, at-home screenings for common STDs shouldn’t replace regular visits to your doc, but it’s a convenient and affordable way to stay on top of your health when you’re crunched for time or strapped for cash—or both.

There are approximately 110 million Americans living with a viral STD today, according to The Center for Disease Control, which left untreated can lead to lifelong health problems. What’s even scarier is that most common STDs have no symptoms or they’re too minor to notice. Early detection is everything, and myLAB Box is dedicated to improving these scary stats and empowering us to do the same.

A recent study has found that go-to hangover cures might not be all they’re cracked up to be.

Many of us turn to hangover cures in hopes of ditching that dreaded post-bender feeling the next morning—drinking light-colored cocktails, sucking back loads of water, eating specific drunk-people foods, even falling for that “hair of the dog” foo-foo nonsense. But scientists have discovered what we’ve known all along (you know, deep down): that the only way to avoid a hangover is to drink less, or not at all.

A group of researchers from the Netherlands and Canada surveyed the drinking habits of 789 Canadian students, covering deets like the number of drinks, the timeframe of consumption, and the severity of their hangover. Researchers calculated the estimated Blood Alcohol Concentration in those who experienced hangovers and those who didn’t.

“In general, we found a pretty simple relationship: the more you drink, the more likely you are to get a hangover,” lead author Joris Verster said in a statement. “The majority of those who in fact reported never having a hangover tended to drink less, perhaps less than they themselves thought would lead to a hangover.” (79 percent of participants who claimed not to experience hangovers had an estimated blood alcohol level of less than 0.10%, with the legal limit in the U.S. being around 0.08%.)

Researchers then looked at whether hangover cures like eating or drinking water right after drinking alcohol decreased your chances of experiencing one. They surveyed 826 Dutch students about their latest drinking sesh, and whether they had food or water post-binge. Over 50 percent ate after drinking, and were asked to rate their hangover (from non-existent to brutal). It turned out there was a barely-there difference between the two groups.

“Those who took food or water showed a slight statistical improvement in how they felt over those who didn’t, but this didn’t really translate into a meaningful difference,” said Verster. “From what we know from the surveys so far, the only practical way to avoid a hangover is to drink less alcohol.”

Okay, so you’re probably feeling exactly how you did when you found out the truth about Santa Claus, but don’t fret: “These are early questionnaire-based studies, and are amongst the first of their kind,” said Verster. “This means they have limitations, but they do give us an indication of what happens. Our next step is to move forward with more controlled trials.”

In other words, there may be legit hangover cures coming soon to a dive bar near you. Time for a celebratory cocktail?

Word is putting on a bra reveals a lot about your personality. (This is not a drill.)

Come on, spill: What’s your go-to move when putting on a bra? Do you use your go-go gadget arms to clasp it in the back? Do you clasp it first then twist it on? Or maybe you prefer putting it on like a shirt? No matter your preference, how you put on your bra reveals a lot more than just your taste in bras. You know, apparently.

According to body language expert Patti Wood, there are four unique ways to put on a bra, and each reveals something about the wearer.

“There are four distinct personality types—drivers, influencers, supporters, and careful correctors—who tend to have very unique ways of doing things, even small tasks,” Wood told Redbook. “Everything you do—and the way you do it—comes together to form a story about yourself, and there’s no reason your undergarments shouldn’t be a part of that.”

So what do your bra-putter-oning habits reveal about your personality? Here’s the inside scoop:

1. You fasten your bra from the back while it’s on

Okay first of all, how the eff do you manage to pull it off? Second of all, your mind bending skills with a boulder holder mean you’re a supporter: You’re uber-responsible and prefer tradition and rules, which is why you put on your bra just like the traditional women of yore. You’re also generous, and are always there for your friends when they’re in a bind—bra-related or otherwise.

2. You hook your bra on the front of your body and then twist it to the back

You’re the influencer of your bra-wearing posse. You’re all about dressing the part and gravitate toward bold bras that make a statement. You’re perpetually optimistic, are led by your emotions, and gravitate toward habits—like how you prefer putting on your bra—that guarantee you always look your best.

3. You prefer bras with front closures

You’re the driver who doesn’t bother with that back closure nonsense, or anything else that’s going to waste your time. You invest in things that are high quality, because why shop if you don’t have to? You make sharp decisions and research them well in advance, and you’re not one for second-guessing yourself. You’re the little girl boss that could.

4. You pull your bra over your head

You’re the careful corrector who focuses on doing things right the first time, which is why you set-it-and-forget-it when it comes to your bra clasps. You’re the most quiet of the personality types, so when you speak your words pack a punch. You’re extremely organized, and you’re a fixer who enjoys figuring out solutions to the peskiest of problems.

What does putting on a bra say about you?

Chic side updos for long hair that you can enjoy all season long.

The fall may be an amazing time of year (whether you’re on the pumpkin-flavored everything bandwagon or not), but for women with long hair, this time of year can be… well, tricky. There’s the perma-static that makes your hair look all Marge Simpson. There’s the constant lint-rollering as you shed all over your snazzy sweaters. And who can forget the build-up of nasty knots at the nape of your neck as your hair rubs up against your shirt collars? Sigh.

That’s where side updos for long hair really come in handy. Not only do they look super chic, but they’ll save you an entire season of detangling. Here are our fave picks:
