If you want to know how to find the Loch Ness monster and other legends, there are tips every cryptid hunter must know.

The Scots have their Nessie, the Tibetans have their Yeti, but North America is also crawling with cryptids (creatures whose existence has been rumored but not yet proven). Here are five must-see destinations for the budding cryptozoologist. But Cryptids are only half the fun: even if you don’t score a sighting on your first visit, these destinations offer so many opportunities for non-mythological outdoor adventure that you won’t leave disappointed.

Dave Shealy, a cryptid researcher and director of Skunk Ape Research Headquarters, has a few tips for first timers looking for legends.

    });

Past sightings in an area are a good indicator of more to come.

Ask locals about recent cryptid activity.

Food sources are your best bet. Research the animal’s favorite eats and know what’s in season when you visit.

1. Skunk Ape: The Everglades, Florida

The Skunk Ape is Bigfoot’s southern cousin. A russet-furred, gorilla-like creature, the Skunk Ape measures about seven feet tall and exudes an appalling odor. First described in the legends of the local Seminole and Miccosukee tribes, the animal gained public recognition after officially reported sightings began 60 years ago. According to Shealy, Skunk Apes are generally shy animals, drawn to the Everglades’ vast tracts of uninterupted wilderness. So even if the Skunk Ape slips by, you won’t suffer wildlife deprivation in the Everglades, which is the largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi and teems with migratory birds, alligators, and snakes.

2. Illie (Iliamna Lake Monster): Iliamna Lake, Alaska

Indigenous legends tell of a giant black fish that bites holes in the bottoms of canoes. Whether you’ve set your sights on the giant or cast your line for a more modest catch, you’re sure to enjoy the famous fishing opportunities of Alaska’s largest lake. Recent evidence indicates that Illie may in fact be a Pacific sleeper shark. The population of these deep water predators has recently surged in northern waters as climate change reduces the icy islands used by polar bears and seals, providing sharks with an all-you-can-eat buffet.

3. Menehune: Kaua’i, Hawaii

More than 1,000 years ago, a pond was built to catch fish on the lush banks of the Hule’ia river. The feat of aquaculture engineering exists to this day and is now called the Menehune Fishpond, in honor of its supposed builders, the Menehune (pronounce meh-neh-HOO-neh), a mischievous little people of legend. The pond overlooks Hule’ia National Wildlife Refuge, a home for endangered Hawaiian waterfowl. Although the refuge is closed to the public (the official reason is protection of the birds…) the curious can book kayaking tours on the Hule’ia river, which meanders through the refuge.

4. Pope Lick Monster: Pope Lick Park, Kentucky

High above Pope Lick Creek, on the Norfolk Southern Railroad trestle, a half-human, half-goat monster hypnotizes his victims, luring them onto the tracks where they fall prey to the oncoming train. The creature is said to have been exhibited as a circus freak in the late 19th century, escaping captivity when lightning struck the circus train and left him the lone survivor. The monster’s trestle has been the site of several deaths by train or falling, so keep your search grounded and wander the trails of the surrounding Pope Lick Park, or go for a paddle on the creek. The park is part of Louisville’s City of Parks initiative, which is adding thousands of acres of parkland to the city’s “greenprint.” Explore them all on the Louisville Loop, a 100 mile trail that encircles the city, linking the parks with neighborhoods and other local attractions.

5. Monster of Monterey: Monterey Bay, California

The plesiosaur was supposed to have gone extinct 60 million years ago, but someone must have forgotten to tell the Monster of Monterey. In 1925, a rotting carcass washed up on Moore’s Beach and its discoverers read Jurassic origins in the creature’s allegedly 20 foot long neck. More recent sightings of a prehistoric survivor alive and swimming have been reported. A cozy hideout for the massive monster might be the Monterey Canyon, the bay’s undersea gorge that plunges two and a half miles into the depths. For guaranteed sightings of rare aquatic (if not prehistoric) creatures, visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium, a nonprofit aquarium dedicated to conservation and education.

You need to take a vacation. No, really. You need to take a paid vacation, that is!

When was the last time you took a vacation? How long did it last? These are among the important questions explored in the recent short film “The Great Vacation Squeeze,” written and directed by John de Graaf. De Graaf has explored the differences in vacation and leisure time between the US and Europe for years, and in 2002 he co-founded the organization Take Back Your Time “to point out the problems connected with overwork in America.”

Supported by Sierra Club Productions, this film is one of his latest projects that examines just how stark these differences are and hopes to inspire people to do something to change it. De Graaf believes that the idea of vacation and leisure is strongly intertwined with the Sierra Club’s mission statement.

“The Sierra Club’s purpose is enjoying, exploring, and protecting the natural world, and it’s hard to enjoy it or explore it when you don’t have any time off. It also leaves you less likely to want to protect it,” he said. “As a member I think it important that the club not forget its commitment to enjoying and exploring nature.”

Which of these facts from the film will convince you it’s about time for paid vacations?

1. Time to catch up. The US is the only wealthy country without paid vacation time, which may be an underlying cause of a whole host of issues, including stress and overwork. “Our lack of policy [mandating paid vacations] contributes to serious health problems, weakens family connections, and [reduces] the opportunity for all of us to get out in the natural world, especially children,” de Graaf said.

2. Strong ties. “It was John Muir, key founder of the Sierra Club, who, as I point out in the film, was the first American to advocate a paid vacation law, way back in 1876,” de Graaf said. Muir called for a law of rest that would give time off each year for people to reconnect with nature. The idea lived on in the early 20th century when President William Howard Taft suggested of a three-month long vacation for every worker.

3. So close, yet so far. During the Great Depression, the Labor Department proposed a two-week paid vacation law, but it failed due to business opposition. Still, two-week trips were common in America at this time, whereas they’ve now dwindled into near oblivion.

4. Practice what we preach. Seventy-three percent of Americans say vacations help recharge their batteries, but fewer actually take this time. Of all working Americans, 28% receive no paid vacation time and 24% get only one week or less.

5. Vacations are win-win. “They do wonders for us in so many ways, as every other country understands, and they are actually helpful to business productivity and creativity as well,” de Graaf said. On an individual level, vacations can be healing in that they give us relief from stressors of daily life. Time off also promotes reflection. “In idleness there is the opportunity for contemplation, there is the opportunity for soul-searching, and for seeing, for really truly, clearly seeing, what’s around us,” says Yosemite Park Ranger Shelton Johnson in the film.

6. Europeans have it better. On average, Europeans live longer and are less likely to suffer from chronic illness after age 50, even though they spend less on health care. Having long, paid vacation time may have something to do with this. It’s known that taking breaks from work greatly reduces stress and even improves productivity.

7. It’s about justice. “Most low-income Americans never have the opportunity and don’t even get paid vacations,” de Graaf said. Many believe that a law mandating paid vacations would eliminate this inequality and ultimately benefit all Americans. –Jessica Zischke

With spring in full swing, chances are you’ve had flowers on the mind lately. Perhaps a getaway to see some of the finest wildflowers in the country is in order? These six places have been hailed as some of the best areas for spring and summer blossom viewing in the nation.

1. Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, California

Although the wildflower blooms in this reserve reached their peak on May 4, there are still a good number of flowers painting the hills vivid colors. Poppy fields will remain for another two weeks and two wildflowers — beavertail cacti and buckwheat — have yet to reach their height. If you’re more of the planning type, be sure to go in April, when the nearby town of Lancaster holds an annual California Poppy Festival featuring live music and family-friendly activities like camel rides.

2. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina and Tennessee

The most visited national park in the US, the Great Smoky Mountains covers areas across both North Carolina and Tennessee. With extensive wildflower bloom information updated multiple times a week, this national park makes it easy for you to plan the perfect time to visit and see all your favorite wildflowers. After seeing some of the 1,500 varieties of flowering plants, you’ll understand why many have nicknamed it “Wildflower National Park.”

3. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Shenandoah National Park has over 200,000 acres of protected lands and boasts more than 850 species of wildflowers. While it’s too late to catch some of the popular flowers, including purple violets and pink lady slippers, the later spring and early summer months still bring plenty of colorful buds to take in. Keep an eye out for columbines, ox-eye daisies, and orange touch-me-nots around this time of year.

4. Fort Pierre National Grassland, South Dakota

This mixed-grass prairie covers over 100,000 acres and is a special sight in the summer when wildflowers are in full bloom. If you’re not as excited about the opportunities for spotting bluebells, bellflower, and Eastern red columbine, you can alternatively keep an eye out for some of the more lively species inhabiting the area, like prairie dogs and burrowing owls.

5. Glacier National Park, Montana

Fortunately for the latecomers to the wildflower scene, the species in Glacier National Park typically don’t peak until July and August. This may feel far into the future, but planning a trip to see the nearly 1,000 species of blossoms will be worth the wait. Make sure to get the inside scoop on which trails will be best for wildflower-viewing. If you want a flower-filled weekend you can even stay overnight in one of the park’s historic lodges or campsites.

Despite this year’s polar vortex, wildflowers will still come to New Hampshire! Orchids are typically the first to blossom, kicking off wildflower season in late May. Make your travel arrangements now to come out during the 21st Annual Celebration of Lupines during the month of June in Franconia Notch. If the bright blankets of lupines covering the ground isn’t enough to convince you to book your travel now, the month will also feature a variety of ongoing and one-time events that attract crowds from far and wide.

The new film “Watermark” looks at our massive dependence on a finite resource.

The opening scene of “Watermark,” a new film from Edward Burtynsky and Jennifer Baichwal, creates a disorienting effect that leaves the viewer feeling tiny against the pure force of water. The film takes features 20 stories across 10 countries in what director Baichwal, (“Manufactured Landscapes” and “Payback”), calls a “river-like rhythm.” Inspired by Burtynsky’s images, the numerous stories create an overarching narrative around the ways we use, control and pollute water.

After working with Butynsky on “Manufactured Landscapes” (2006), Baichwal wanted to team up with the photographer again. His work had been the focus of her previous film about industrial manufacturing. When she saw the images he had been working on for a National Geographic essay about water in California, she knew it was the next film.

    });

She felt that the dire tone of other environmental docs failed. Instead Watermark presents a visually compelling story that combines aerial vantages, macros shots and time lapses to present a holistic and artistic perspective. Baichwal said they wanted to capture the full reach of human interaction with water, resulting in a 90 minute film edited from 200 hours of footage.

“Watermark” moves between the expansive industrial projects around water, like China’s Xiluodu Dam, which is six times the size of the Hoover Dam, and the individual human interactions with water, such as the water guard pacing the rice paddies of Yunnan, making sure no one diverts his family’s supply. The lone guard’s patrol of trickling waterways contrasts with the Maha Kumbh Mela, a ritual gathering of 30 million people who bathe in a sacred river. Baichwal said the Maha Kumbh Mela served as the “spiritual connection to the water.”

“We had broad and respectful ways of filming these stories,” Baichwal said. “Instead of having experts talking about it, we had the people living it.”

Another story focuses on the Dhaka, Bangledesh, leather tanneries that pump chemicals into the local water supply, highlighting the interconnectedness of different water usages. The same water used to process hides is later used for washing people and their clothes. In another scene the parched Colorado River Delta serves as a distinct contrast to the pools of Discovery Bay, a community built right onto the California Delta, built mere feet away from a body of water. California agriculture needs the scarce resource to produce the substantial amounts of produce it supplies the rest of the country, while the abalone farms near China’s Fujian coast are built into the water itself. There are parallels and divergences in how water is used by people around the world, but the recurring theme is that it is necessary for existence.

“It’s interesting living in Canada, which has about twenty percent of world’s fresh water supply. It’s very easy to take advantage of it,” Baichwal said. “When you see the devastating effects of water pollution it’s impossible to take it for granted.”

She wanted to create a greater awareness of and respect for water, but wanted to approach it different from other environmental documentaries. Instead of inundating viewers with interviews from experts, she chose a more philosophical approach. “We wanted to create a river – we wanted to immerse viewers in it,” Baichwal explained.

“I’m much more interested in understanding the complexity. Acknowledging complexity means not making quick judgements,” she said. “We worked hard on this film. Wanted to open up a space and move people. The power of film is that it can move you. The goal of the film is to do that and create an awareness, or expand our awareness, of this incredible natural force.”

Burtynsky’s studio is featured frequently as he makes edits to his book, Burtynsky-Water, which spans five years of work. The photographs were also part of a traveling exhibition in 2013, making this project a multi-platform experience.

The film, which won Best Documentary at the Canadian Screen Awards and Best Canadian Film from the Toronto Film Critics Association, is playing around the USA in limited release.- Bianca Hernandez

National parks are already vacation worthy, but now you have more reasons to go.

Spice up a vacation itinerary by visiting places you’ve already seen on the silver screen. The films on this list used national parks as backdrops to some unforgettable scenes. Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to create your own adventure once you get there.

1. “Star Wars: A New Hope” (1977) For some of us there are still only three “Star Wars” films. Part of the reason we cling so heartily to the original trilogy is that they didn’t use green screens/chroma keys for all of their locations. Parts of Death Valley National Park, where temperatures regularly soar to over 100 degrees, were used for some of the Tatooine sets. Who wouldn’t want to brave that weather for a chance to experience a galaxy not so far away?

Aside from these community greening events, the league is also taking steps to ensure its games have as small an impact as possible. The NBA’s newest arena, Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, recently became the first sports and entertainment venue in the New York metro area to achieve a LEED silver status. Barclays Center achieved this distinction through its installation of low-flow toilets, 91% sustainable wood features, and a Cor-Ten steel framework.

The NBA is working hard to green its game, and it appears that other professional sports leagues such as Major League Baseball and the National Hockey League are trying to do their part as well. Because of the unique platform that these leagues possess, their contributions to environmental awareness and alternative energies are invaluable, and we hope that they continue to lead the way. – Callum Beals

Bicycling doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice fashion.

The number of Americans commuting by bike continues to rise, and fashion designers are sitting up and taking notice. Neon spandex generally isn’t considered appropriate office attire, but the fits of most slacks and dresses don’t lend themselves neatly (or safely) to pedaling. Anyone who’s caught a pant leg in their gears or toted an wardrobe change in their backpack knows the importance of stylish cycling clothes. Fortunately, the number of sartorial options for style-savvy bike commuters are now numerous. Check out these designers for fashionable duds with your eco-friendly commute in mind:

1. Vespertine: Having had their reflective safety vest featured in Vogue, this company has certainly earned their “Haute Réflecture” label. Vespertine pieces are woven with threads that are invisible indoors but shine under a car headlights, making you visible from within 2,000 feet. In addition to reflective and work-friendly shirt dresses, trench coats, and jackets, the company sells a number of chic and shiny accessories. Choose from belts, scarves, bow ties, and jewelry, all designed to keep you fashionable and visible on the road.

2. Outlier: The New York-based company began with a basic pair of sturdy commuter pants, inspired by “the intense feeling of exhilaration and liberation that comes from riding in the city.” Since then they’ve added blazers cut to allow greater range of movement, air-forged women’s button downs that defy sweat, and a number of other elegantly designed basics guaranteed to withstand whatever your morning commute throws at you.

3. Iva Jean: Anyone who’s ever tried to ride a bicycle in a pencil skirt will be blown away by the company’s Reveal Skirt, which discretely unzips to reveal extra fabric, allowing for a greater range of motion and easier pedaling. To sweeten the deal, through December 15, 2013, 10% of all online sales at Iva Jean will be donated to World Bicycle Relief.

4. Levi’s: While the original Commuter line received some mixed reviews from the critics, shoppers seem to love the Commuter Trousers. With reflective cuffs, a high rise, and reinforced water-resistant fabric disguised as work-friendly khakis, these slacks have earned some serious fans in the commuting community.

5. Yakkay: The Danish helmet manufacturer has caused quite a stir since their high-fashion helmets hit the U.S. market last year. Yakkay offers traditional hard helmets with a number of interchangeable covers, from herringbone riding caps to striped fedoras, all U.S. CPSC certified. Obviously safety always trumps style, so do your research before you buy. – Julie Eng

For millions of Americans who find themselves in food deserts, getting their daily apple is tougher than usual.

The USDA defines a food desert as an impoverished region of the country where thousands of people can’t regularly access healthy, affordable, and organic foods due to lack of grocery stores, farmers’ markets, and personal transportation. And the constant availability of fast food restaurants in these food deserts certainly doesn’t help America’s rampant obesity epidemic.

U.S. cities lacking in fresh fruits and veggies aren’t limited to the big city expanses of Los Angeles, Oakland, Detroit, or Chicago; in fact many small towns in the heart of the nation suffer just as much from lack of fresh greens.

Here are some big ideas for providing resources to help food desert dwellers around the nation enjoy the taste and benefits of farm-fresh produce.

1. 100 Yards of Harvest After having to sack its football program due to low enrollment, Paul Quinn College, a small liberal arts college near Dallas, Texas, transformed their vestigial football field into a huge farm. Today, staff and students (and in collaboration with PepsiCo Inc.) at Paul Quinn cultivate the WE Over ME Farm, growing collard greens, heirloom tomatoes, swiss chard, mustard greens, and more. The cornucopia of food harvested from the farm is then distributed to local charities, grocery stores, community markets in surrounding Dallas, and the college students, who get to enjoy the fruits of their hard work.

2. Mobile Markets Some 550,000 Detroit residents suffer from an imbalance of healthy food options — grocery stores are few and far between compared to fast food restaurants. Mobile food co-ops that bring the farm to the city, like Detroit’s Peaches & Greens, go the extra mile in ensuring people get the foods they need at affordable prices. And in California’s rural valleys, California’s Second Harvest Food Bank exists to travel 63 sites throughout San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.

3. Urban Aggies It’s not “Green Acres” on 5th Avenue, but it’s close. Urban farming initiatives are on the rise, educating and empowering big-city communities to grow their own produce. City Slicker Farms of West Oakland organizes and encourages folks like Abeni Ramsey to start up independent urban farming enterprises of their own. And in Chicago’s South Side, Iron Street Farm provides seven acres of farmland to the community. – J. Scott Donahue

Photography tips like these make all the difference when capturing the delicate fragility of nature.

For some of us, part of the excitement of trekking out into open meadows and forest wilderness is the attempt to capture the rich colors and immaculate scenery to share with friends and family.

But let’s face it, it’s impossible to replicate the grandeur of being present.

We do, however, have a few photography tips to help your photos do nature justice while making you an up-and-coming Ansel Adams among your friends.

1. Always check your light source. There are two things to be wary of: intensity and direction. Try to avoid the harsh light of the high noon sun. When trying to capture landscapes, the best light is found at dawn or dusk. When photographing friends or a subject, position the light so that it hits the subject from the front, not from behind. As a side note, overcast days are often great for outdoor photography, the clouds diffuse the light and your photos will come out rich without being over-exposed.

2. Use the Rule of Thirds. Try to position your subject (butterfly, mountain goat, or precariously perched tree) using the Rule of Thirds. Imagine placing a grid across your photograph, dividing it up into nine equally spaced cubes. In following this rule, you’ll want to place your subject at the intersections of these lines or along those lines. It is thought to provide a stronger composition and more interesting photograph than centering the subject in the frame would.

3. Look for patterns in nature. The human eye loves patterns, but to find them in nature you need to get in close for a detail shot. If you have a digital camera, don’t hesitate to get down on the ground or zoom-in to get close enough to see patterns emerging.

4. Do the Cha-Cha, the Visual Cha-Cha. To really capture being in a location, you have to do the visual cha-cha. You’ll want a wide shot, medium shot, and three detail shots. A wide shot would be a landscape shot, or think of it as if you were omnipresent. The medium shot would be a subject or two. And your detail shot would be the texture of a leaf or your friend’s chalk-covered hands while rock climbing. Just remember wide, medium, tight-tight-tight. — Christine Coester

Meat-free foods are important to a diet, vegetarian or not. And these ten vegetarian protein, vitamin and antioxidant sources are key for an active lifestyle.

Ann Trason is considered by many to be one of the top ultramarathon runners in history. With 20 world records set in courses from 50 to 100 miles in length, she has amassed one of the most venerated careers the sport has ever seen. Paula Edelson writes in her book A to Z of American Women in Sports (2002) that Trason “seems at times to possess superhuman strength.”

That superhuman ability translates into one superhuman nutrition plan. We spoke with Ann recently by phone and asked for ten of her favorite meat-free foods for active lifestyles. You don’t have to be a running icon to try them, but substituting these choices into your daily diet will still put you on the high road toward good health.

1. Nut and Seed Butters: Great as a spread, or even as a snack from the jar. Try some organic sunflower butter — these seeds hold almost four times as much vitamin E content per serving as do peanuts.

2. Avocados: These fruits are packed full of healthy fats and meat-free protein. Slice one up on a sandwich for some extra flavor.

3. Quinoa: A staple in traditional Incan cuisine, quinoa is a source of “complete protein,” meaning that it contains essential amino acids that our bodies can’t produce naturally. Trason likes to throw in some quinoa with her salads for a nutrient-balanced meal.

4. Speaking of salads, Trason’s favorite right now is one that features roasted beets. “I love to combine beets with some crumbled cheese, orange slices, and some fennel,” she says. These root vegetables provide high levels of natural antioxidants at just 35 calories per serving.

5. Kale: “It’s the rage these days,” Trason says. It’s also a vitamin and mineral powerhouse, giving substantial levels of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, potassium, and calcium. Trason will sometimes thinly slice her kale and “dress it up” with feta cheese.

6. Roasted Brussels Sprouts: Trason’s favorite right now. “Serving them with a little bit of onion is a great extra,” she says. High in vitamin C and in dietary fiber, Brussels sprouts actually belong to the same plant family as cabbages.

7. Brewer’s Yeast: Want an alternative to jitter-happy energy drinks? Try small mixtures of brewer’s yeast instead. It’s loaded with B-complex vitamins, and its high value of chromium helps your body keep a steady blood sugar level. You can find brewer’s yeast in many different forms, including tablets, flakes, powders, and liquids.

8. Energy Bars: Some energy bars can serve as full meal replacements, depending on their ingredients. But those ingredients are worth a close look — Trason says to be wary of unhealthy oils listed on the wrapper that are surrounded by descriptions like partially hydrogenated. Also important, she says, is to dispose of your wrapper properly. Thankfully, more and more energy bar companies are creating biodegradable packaging for their products.

9. Black Beans: “I love whole black beans,” says Trason. “A great, earthy texture for any meal.” The beans’ high levels of fiber and protein will keep you fuller longer. Serve as a nutritious complement to dishes with vegetables, rice, or meat.

10. Brown Rice: The long-grain variety gives a healthy serving of complex carbohydrates for that energy you need. Try some in soups, salads, or in any recipe that requires cooked rice. – Davis Jones
