Clothing giant Esprit recently launched a recycled clothing collection which achieved the newly popular R Cert status, a certification system that guarantees a minimal percentage of reused fiber. Other large brands, like Puma and H&M and indy labels, like Jane Bowler, are finding all kinds of uses for recycled fabrics.

Textile technologies have advanced to the point where new fabrics can be make by recycling old ones or from other materials, but it can be hard to know if they are legitimate. R Cert is an accreditation system that applies mainly in the Asian market and is issued by the Hong Kong based Redress (the same group behind the 365 challenge). Basically, the R Cert means that a particular item of clothing is made up of at least 20% recycled fibers and allows customers to track the item’s journey from factory to store on a dedicated website. To celebrate this achievement and the move toward greater transparency and accountability, we round up three more examples of innovative recycled clothing.

Jane Bowler Raincoat

UK designer Jane Bowler uses recycled plastics for her avant garde inspired raincoats. She uses reappropriated plastics (including from shower curtains) to create unique designs to reflect her belief that recycled materials can be luxurious, innovative and desirable.

PUMA Track Jacket

The PUMA ‘Track Jacket’ which is part of its InCycle Recycled products collection, is made from polyester deriving from recycled PET bottles. Even the zippers are made from recycled polyester. Interestingly, the jacket can be turned back into polyester granulate and serve as a secondary raw material for other exciting products at the end of its life.

H&M Cycle Wear

The successful Swedish retailer teamed up with Brick Lane Bikes in the UK to launch an 11 piece menswear collection of casual pieces for cycling (a more eco friendly way to get around!). The collection itself uses recycled cotton, recycled wool and recycled polyester.

Gone are the days where women carried around large vanity cases, filled to the brim with toxic potions and lotions. These days, it’s all about natural beauty, and we look for compactness and convenience. Nobody has time to spend hours in front of the mirror—we have embraced a more natural style of beauty and have really taken to the idea that less is more (for personal and environmental reasons). Hence, the rise of the coveted multitasker. Most of us own products that color up both lips and cheeks, but here’s a roundup of products that offer even more flexibility.

RMS Living Luminizer

Miranda Kerr swears by this organic beauty brand, so if that’s not an endorsement, we don’t know what is! This dewy balm promises to give you model-esque skin without the toxins. You can use it on your cheek bones, brow bones, nose, bow of the lips or eyelids, to give a healthy glow (without looking too glossy or sparkly!) You can also use it as a lip gloss (or blend it with lipstick) and even pop it on your shoulders at night for some shimmer.

De Mamiel Facial Oil

The De Mamiel Winter Facial Oil is designed for the cooler months, but can be used all year round (or you can indulge in one of their other seasonal serums). It is designed to provide nourishment for skin in need of moisture—well-hydrated skin is one of the keys to natural beauty— and incorporates Flower Essences for potency. You can massage it into skin before your moisturizer for ultimate hydration, massage it onto your acupuncture points for calmness and vitality or pop a few drops in hot water, which you can use to steam your skin for a well deserved ‘at home’ facial.

Revolution Organics Beauty Balm

This beautiful balm is 100% natural and created with 85% organic ingredients. It calls itself an all over body balm which can be used on lips, cheeks and decolletage. It comes in three exciting colors (Blushed, Bronzed and Sunkissed) with just a hint of tint for a radiant glow. With the more natural products, you can have more confidence to also use it as a wash of eye color too. The bronzed hue is well suited to creating a dewy, natural eye for the ultimate fresh-faced look.

Lanolips 101 Ointment

This little gem has won a multitude of awards for being an amazing lip balm, but it doesn’t end there! It can also be used for dry skin, dry nasal passages and cuticles. When your nails are ravaged from too many manicures, the Lanolips Ointment gives nails a nourishing boost You can also mix it with lip color for a glossy shine that isn’t at all sticky. Lanolin is the main ingredient in this product (yes- the same substance taken from freshly cut sheep’s wool) and is completely natural, though not vegan.

Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil is not always billed as a natural beauty product in its own right, but it is one of the most versatile around. It can be used as a facel and body moisturizer, makeup remover (including for eye makeup), pre-conditioner for hair, and soap alternative for the shower. By blending a little of this miracle oil between your fingers, you can also use it as a cheek and eye gloss for a dewy glow that lasts for hours. Contrary to popular belief, it also offers some SPF protection so is actually perfect to slather on in the sun. It’s often infused in other beauty products but shouldn’t be overlooked on its own.

Images: Lanolips, De Mamiel, Luis Calcada

Mustaches have oft been seen to be the mark of a man. From the refined whiskers of Hollywood gentlemen to the more masculine mo’s of 80s teen heart-throbs, the humble mustache defines generations. And they are well and truly back in vogue! Everywhere you turn, men are rocking facial hair like it’s 1985. Even initiatives like Movember are encouraging men to embrace their facial locks while raising money and awareness for a good cause. As versatile as they are diverse, do you know the difference between the Handlebar, the Jigsaw, and the Artiste? If not, we’ve got you covered.

French painters popularized this Parisian look which is reserved for only the most stylish sophisticates. Whiskers can be worn in the traditional neat and tidy way, or you can add wax to the tips for a truly artistic flair (think Salvador Dali!)

The Rockin’ Stache

Made famous by rock legends (like Jimi Hendrix, George Harrison (above) and The Beatles), the Rockin’ Stache had its time in the sun in the 60s and 70s. Many see this style as one that signals stardom and in fact, it is often referred to as “the musical moustache.”

The Horseshoe

Hulk Hogan really nailed this iconic trend with his over-the-top style, but the horseshoe mustache has been coveted by many and sometimes jokingly associated with virility and masculinity. Reserved for only the manliest of men (whatever that means), cowboys have also rocked this look.

The Commitment-Phobe

For those not quite sure whether they are ready to embrace the full mo, the barely there mustache is the perfect compromise. Often worn in conjunction with a barely there beard, the ‘almost mo’ rose to prominence in the 90s (and on the catwalk!) as a glamorous ‘on trend’ look.

The Jigsaw

Johnny Depp helped to make this look famous. The jigsaw mustache consists of two carefully groomed pieces on the upper lip, a small patch under the lower lip and sometimes even a larger patch around the bottom of the chin.

The Southern Hemisphere is certainly stepping up in the sustainable style stakes! First, New Zealand announced their very first ethical fashion week, and now the countdown is on for Australia’s inaugural Indigenous Fashion Week (AIFW), being held in April 2014. AIFW is all about showcasing the best of aboriginal Australian design from across the continent, celebrating the world’s oldest surviving continuous culture—on the catwalk. Fronted by well-known Australian model Samantha Harris, the week is going to be one of Sydney’s most stylish.

The goals of AIFW are not just about what’s on the runway. It’s equally about ideals beyond fashion like a focus on fair trade, supporting the economic development of Indigenous artists and highlighting ethical practice.

Here, we take a look at three of the emerging designers who will get the chance to showcase down under in 2014.

Lilla Gagliano

Lilla Gagliano is the creative force behind Kaninda, a stylish label from Australia’s western state. Lilla has both Indigenous and Italian heritage and her designs reflect her passion for both her cultural heritage and the world of fashion. She also draws inspiration from living in the beautiful Pilbara country. A textile and batik designer, she produces her own fabrics (including hand painted silks!). Even though Kaninda was born in 2004, Lilla’s debut collection didn’t show until Perth Fashion Week 2012, but received positive reviews.

Natalie Cunningham

Hailing from Australia’s aptly named Sunshine Coast, Natalie’s Indigenous and Greek heritage influence her unique design. Initially, she started out as a model, but it wasn’t long before she turned her hand to design, launching her eponymous label in 2006 at just 24. Famous for her love of eccentric fabrics and her homage to the 80s through the use of pops of exciting color, Natalie certainly does things differently. She is also committed to supporting positive images of women in fashion, particularly given her experience as a model. Rumor has it this talented designer is set to release an Indigenous swimwear and resort wear line in early 2014.

Caressa Sengstock

Caressa is the edgy, unique fashion label from Caressa Sengstock. Caressa began working in the fashion industry in 2009, around the same time as she started to take art classes, which tapped into her creative flair. All of her fashion pieces have been inspired by her own paintings, depicting ancient Dreamtime stories. Her skills really got noticed when a Rainbow Serpent dress that she designed turned heads at the Indigenous Awards night in Sydney. Following this, she was then asked to design a dress for an Australian music awards night and from there, she really took off. One of her recent collections, Spirit Tree, depicts a Dreamtime story about the journey from death to heaven, in which the use of sequins represent the dots in the roots of the tree, as souls traveling into the trunk. The way she pays tribute to ancient stories through contemporary design is just one way this designer stands out.

New Zealand just announced the world’s next eco fashion week, joining Amsterdam, Vancouver and Berlin Fashion Weeks. Flying the flag for the Asia Pacific region (Australian designers have also been active in the ethical realm), New Zealand will be hosting an Eco Fashion Runway Event in September to support their exciting, emerging market. The show will include up to 14 designers and involve New Zealand’s sustainable style model, Hannah Pasene. Like most of the other big fashion weeks, it will be a combination of workshops, pop-up shops and spectacular runway events.

Co-founder and eco fashion designer Denise Anglesey says the idea for the event has been brewing since 2008, and indeed she is joined by plenty of other Kiwi creators. To celebrate this exciting new announcement, we look to three of New Zealand’s successful labels that keep sustainability in style.

Shikoba Clothing

Shikoba Clothing‘s creation is influenced by New Zealand’s unique natural environment (think Lord of the Rings) and cultural heritage. Aroha Wikotu founded the line in 2006, and she has a strong commitment to innovation and is constantly researching new processes, technical skills and the latest in fabric design. The entire line is 100% made in New Zealand, and their website hints that they will soon be announcing a new eco label, which uses only New Zealand-made fabrics, so this is one line to keep an eye on.

Untouched World

Untouched World prides itself on being the first fashion company in the world to be recognised by the United Nations for sustainability. A fashion and sportswear brand based on and inspired by the New Zealand lifestyle, Untouched World works on the principle that you don’t have to forgo luxury to support fashion that is both stylish and eco friendly. This ethos caught the attention of the United Nations, which in 2007 acknowledged their efforts by accrediting them to use the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainability emblem on its clothing. They regularly publish sustainability reports on their website and have won a plethora of awards for their efforts. Their logo represents a Maori kite, which is an emblem of the relationship between man and nature. This sentiment drives their business and is reflected in their effortlessly chic styles.

Kowtow

Kowtow Clothing only uses certified organic, fair trade materials and they regularly promotes the fact that their lines are ethically and sustainably made from seed to garment. They use only 100% fair trade certified cotton (which is also 100% organic!) and manufacture in an ethical factory in Kolkota, India. They are so committed to fair labor that the Kowtow team travelled to India, to document on film, their entire cotton chain from seed to garment. In addition to offering stylish, quirky pieces for both men and women, they also have a ‘building blocks’ collection of versatile, long-lasting pieces, which will blend across the seasons and team nicely with more of the up-to-the-minute looks.

Impossible is a new social networking concept which encourages people to offer their skills and services for free, with the ultimate aim of creating a ‘gift economy.’ Backed by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, Cole created an app that allows people to offer their talents with no expectation for recompense (as opposed to a paid or barter system). Like Facebook, Impossible is getting its first audience inside university walls. As an alumni of the prestigious Cambridge University (even achieving a double first in the History of Art in 2011!), Cole launched the app to students first, in the hope that their feedback will see a much improved version launched nationally in Britain. To celebrate, Lily also took part in a debate at the Cambridge Union Society on the idea of whether an economy based on giving is impossible.

So far, the app has seen people offer their skills in all sorts of ways, from speaking German to baking cakes and drawing portraits. The inspired idea for Impossible came from Cole’s trip to a refugee camp on the Thai-Burmese border, where she said the sense of community she witnessed was so humbling, it sparked the sentiment for it to exist elsewhere. In the true spirit of giving, any profits gained by the venture will be reinvested into the company or used to support other social ventures.

Ethical Jewelry Design

Cole recently made a foray into the design world, teaming up with stylistpick.com to launch a range of bracelets, rings and pendants to support the protection of the Amazon rainforest. In fact, the pieces in the collection are actually made using Amazonian wild rubber. The collaboration came about after Cole was approached by Sky Rainforest Rescue last year and offered a trip to Brazil, to learn more about wild rubber tapping; she was involved in production process from the rubber tapping itself, right through to final production. Drawing on her own sense of style, the final look and feel of the collection is inspired by an African pendant that she owns. (It’s comes as no surprise then that her favorite piece in the collection is a long pendant!)

The overall aim of the project is to save a billion trees in the Amazon, and Cole is now an ambassador for Sky Rainforest Rescue. In fact, she has even enlisted the support of fashion veteran Vivienne Westwood, who designed a dress for her to wear to the Met Ball earlier this year—from the same wild rubber that is used in the jewelry.

It’s for both of the thoughtful, stylish projects above that we name Lily Cole a compassioneer!

It seems as though we still have some way to go in celebrating our natural beauty, not least of all in advertising. New research released in Australia this month suggests that 79 percent of women admit to retouching images of themselves before letting their friends or social networks see them. What’s more, 93 percent of these altered images are being uploaded by women, as real representations of themselves.

These findings sparked the idea for a new campaign from beauty company Trilogy: 100% Unretouched.

It means just what it sounds like. The natural beauty company took a bold step (can you imagine another large, mainstream company doing the same?) by making a promise to only feature unretouched images of women in its advertising. Naturally (pun intended!) Trilogy have sparked a national conversation around the issue in Australia and now, the world.

In the official campaign media release, Corinne Morley, global sales and marketing manager for Trilogy, said the company has “already received positive feedback from thousands of women through letters, emails and social media on retouching and it’s clear that our community not only wants to see realistic representations of beauty in advertising and the media, but are embracing their own natural beauty as well.”

It’s not a surprise; an average woman is subject to multiple images every day of perfectly Photoshopped women (who are usually great-looking models to begin with). As retouching technology has become more ubiquitous, we are seeing that faux perfection in places we never did before—from local low-budget ads to our friends’ wedding shots. And magazine covers and editorials are more and more heavily ‘shopped every year. And now we can all get in on the action: Even popular app Instagram allows you to apply different filters to your shots (though sometimes these can just be great to brighten a too-dark pic or make it look moody and fun). But plenty of Instagram selfies are more about how great the filters make your skin look, which is why one element of Trilogy’s campaign is to encourage women to use the hashtag #FilterFreeFriday when uploading images of themselves.

Trilogy’s asking for comments on the campaign app and for the public to share unretouched photos of themselves on the page and through other forms of social media.

The three ambassadors of the campaign are Zoe Foster Blake, a well known Australian beauty expert, writer and blogger, Trilogy’s Business Manager, Jenny and model Amanda, who has worked with the brand previously and whose natural beauty helped to inspire the campaign.

In fact, Amanda was the face of another Trilogy campaign called Every Face Has A Story To Tell which was a sort-of precursor to the current conversation. The images of Amanda were left unretouched for Every Face and the brand included a small note in the corner of the ads, letting their customers know they didn’t retouch the images because they were committed to celebrating real, natural beauty. The response was so overwhelming, that the 100% Unretouched campaign became a continuation of an already-great idea.

As a brand, Trilogy has always had a reputation for keeping things honest, innovative and natural. Founded in 2002 by Kiwi sisters Sarah Gibbs and Catherine de Groot, it has maintained its commitment to ethical and natural skincare. Rosehip Oil is the core of its product formulations and the label has even pioneered a method of extracting the purest, most potent oil from rosehip seeds for high performing, natural products.

It’s exciting to see beauty brands apply honesty, innovation and ethics to responsible marketing and advertising. Not to mention celebrating what it is that makes women naturally beautiful—their whole, real selves.
We look at some of the highlights from this year’s event, which was held from 2-7 July.

1. Showfloor Berlin

Showfloor Berlin has taken place every six months since 2009. This year, it returned to its traditional summer location, KOSMOS BERLIN at Karl-Marx-Alle, a historically preserved cinema in East Berlin. The event itself played host to 16 collections with a range of individually designed shows, with each label bringing its own unique approach to responsible production methods. Interestingly, on 3 July, the showroom runway showcased innovative avant-garde designs from Portugal, as part of a partnership arrangement with the Portuguese Embassy. It proudly presented the well known avant-garde fashion labels Dino Alves, V!tor, and “Os Burgueses” from Lisbon. Some of the big local names which were part of the showcase included ANSOHO, Ellen Eisemann and AUGUST. Showfloor Berlin is particularly unique as it is open to the public and extremely accessible to fashion lovers.

2. GREENShowroom

The GREENShowroom is traditionally a very unconventional trade fair and this time proved to be no different, as it presented the high-end trends for 2014 in quirky and unusual ways. Approaching its 10th season, Berlin’s Adlon Hotel was the backdrop for the event which caters mainly to trade and business professionals. This July, the focus was very much on avant-garde with innovative German labels Aleks Kurkowski, Cocccon and Katharina Kaiser, among the selections. This year, the event also welcomed French label Johanna Riplinger, which is known for turning high-end fabrics into modern business styles. Also debuting at GreenShowroom this year were the three finalists from the Humanity in Fashion Award. To start the show, a Salonshow event was held on 2 July, showing 54 looks from 20 of the participating brands. Some of the trends predicted for next summer include bright, beautiful pops and relaxed knitwear.

3. Ethical Fashion Show

The Ethical Fashion Show is a highlight of Berlin Fashion Week and showcases international labels, which presented spring/summer 2014 collections across innovative street and casual wear. The fashion show itself is complemented by panel discussions and educational seminars to highlight the ethics behind the designs. This year, the focus was firmly on social standards in the manufacturing process and transparency of the supply chain. After a successful start at Berlin Fashion Week in January 2013, the Knowledge Lounge initiative continued this season, which is a seminar series on eco fashion issues. This time around, the Fair Wear Foundation invited people to attend the premiere of its WellMade seminar series, where they threw a spotlight on the clothing industry’s social standards and provided hands on expertise and solutions for improvement of related working conditions. The Ethical Fashion Show Berlin also hosted a Create Green Breakfast with a focus on Innovative Sales Concepts, which featured keynote speakers Orsola de Castro and Filippo Ricci.

Vogue. Elle. Harper’s Bazaar. These are all familiar names in the publishing industry and some of the world’s most popular fashion magazines. All of them have at some point supported, promoted or endorsed eco fashion and beauty products on their glossy pages, but there are a whole set of new green magazines to hit the shelves, which are dedicated to the cause.

With consumer demand for more conscious consumption, some newer green magazines are catering to the trend for more eco and ethical fashion options and natural and organic beauty. Here are top four eco chic titles.

In keeping with the digital trend (and to save paper!) Coco Eco is an online magazine which supports eco-luxe fashion, beauty, celebrity and culture. Founded in 2008 by native Londoner and now LA-based Anna Griffin, the magazine vows never to sell out and support brands or companies whose ethics don’t align with their own. It attracts a mainly U.S.-based audience, but is gaining international momentum, being read in more than 14 other countries. Since its inception, it has built a reputation on partnering and featuring well known celebrities who support eco living. Some of the better known faces which have graced their pages include Alicia Silverstone, Sting and Josie Maran. It really does live by its slogan Good. Green. Glam.

2. ELuxe Magazine

Elegant, ethical and ecological. That’s how newcomer ELuxe magazine describes itself, having been founded only a handful of months ago. Based between London and Paris, the online publication is dedicated to showcasing brands that demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainability and environmental awareness. In fact, ELuxe openly advertises the sustainability criteria by which brands are judged. As well as the regular features you would expect from a fashion magazine, like beauty and accessories sections, it also boasts a comprehensive Eco Tech section, looking at issues of transport, gadgets and energy saving tips. It also keeps its finger on the digital (and international!) pulse by regularly profiling eco bloggers from around the world.

3. Organic Spa

More for the beauty and wellness buff than the fashionista, Organic Spa is now renowned as the leading national consumer eco lifestyle magazine in America. It describes itself as bridging spa wisdom, wellness, preventative health and modern green and organic living. It aims to provide readers with advice on how to lead a healthier, more sustainable and well balanced life. In addition to being a print magazine, there is also an app, a blog and website from which to soak up sustainable inspiration. Their website even boasts a digital meditation room, with images and music to settle the mind and soothe the soul.

4. Peppermint

Peppermint Magazine is a smaller, but no less eco friendly publication hailing from Australia’s sunny state of Queensland. It is the leading green fashion and lifestyle magazine down under, celebrating eco and ethical style with a sense of fun. Although it is heavily connected to the emerging Australian market, it also showcases some of the best handmade and eco friendly products from around the world. The magazine includes in-depth features, goes behind the scene of the fashion industry and big fashion events, while also shining a light on important social issues. It has won a number of awards at home, has an up-to-the-minute blog, and is a pioneer of the fashion magazine world in the Asia Pacific.

Sir Richard Branson has always had a reputation for pushing the boundaries and doing things differently. Recently, he made his mark again, by partnering Virgin Atlantic with renowned fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, to bring sustainable style to the skies.

In only the fourth upgrade to the uniform in over 30 years, Westwood was asked to reinterpret the signature red looks, as part of a collaboration that will run for a decade and follow a decidedly eco-friendly theme.

The uniforms themselves, inspired by 1940s French couture and futuristic looks, will be made from a selection of eco-friendly, recycled and recyclable fabrics, and will be worn by the more than 7,500 Virgin employees. Even the ground staff will enjoy a collection of bags made from unusual materials including discarded roadside banners and recycled brass. These materials are being sourced in Nairobi through the Ethical Africa Program in collaboration with the International Trade Centre.

 -->

Virgin Atlantic is also developing all items with closed loop recycling in mind. This new technology takes worn polyester clothing and turns it back into fibers that can be woven again into new fabrics and in turn new clothing.

Westwood and Branson may seem an unlikely pair, but they were first introduced in 1977 by Westwood’s ex-husband, Malcolm McLaren, who Branson knew from signing his band The Sex Pistols, to his label. When it came time to revamp the Virgin Atlantic uniforms, Branson told Vogue UK, “The one person in this world who could create unique designs is Vivienne. So it’s great to be working with her. What we don’t want to do is work with anyone who comes up with a design and just dumps it on the cabin crew. It’s glamorous, it’s stylish.”

A world famous fashion designer in her own right, Westwood has also recently become a campaigner in the fight against climate change. Back in 2005, she set up the Active Resistance Project to encourage engagement with environmental and humanitarian issues. She also designed a t-shirt for the Environmental Justice Foundation for a campaign to support climate refugees. She has made generous personal donations to the climate cause and not that long ago, unveiled her new manifesto entitled ‘Do It Yourself’, which suggests that fashion should be less about the ‘throw away’ philosophy and more about recycling, quality and utilizing key pieces.

In the official press release about the partnership, Westwood said, “My clothes have always got a very strong dynamic rapport with the body- they are very body conscious, they help you to look glamorous, more hourglass, more woman. I design things to help people to hopefully express their personality. I am always trying to find fabrics that are more friendly to the environment – working with Virgin Atlantic they managed to research into this and find more eco fabrics.”

The women’s outfits includes a waist-cinching jacket and pencil skirt, with the men’s look being a three piece Savile Row inspired suit in rich burgundy wool.

Although the full collection won’t be formally launched until next year, some Virgin staff will be trialling the new looks, so keep your eyes peeled!
