That is so funny - my parents were the opposite. We had a compost pile in our backyard in the 70s and 80s and my friends were like, "Why is there a big pile of rotting garbage in your backyard?" We also had a big garden (grew our own vegetables), were constantly nagged to turn off the lights, take shorter showers, and were not allowed to own anything with a motor (no power boats, only canoes and kayaks). Then I felt so annoyed about it, now I marvel at how smart they were. :)

Allison, this is wonderful article which reminds me of a quote by Aristotle- "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act, but a habit." It doesn't matter what new technologies are developed. If people aren't convinced and begin changing the damaging patterns of their daily lives, the situation is only going to get worse. We must do our best to improve the quality of our parents desires-to think as a whole.

This is a great read, and something, I too, have encountered. NOT with my parents, but some of my mother's relatives. While I completely understand that many Baby Boomers and some Generation Xer's have a overbuy, overuse mentality, I have to point out that it was many from the Baby Boomer generation who started farm collectives, solar power panels, and recycling programs during the 60's. The Counterculture was made up completely of Boomers who forged the path of returning to the land, and who wrote books about it for the next generations. They were the pioneers of what we have taken to the next level. Just thought I had to throw the BB a bone. (And seriously, sorry your dad thinks factory beef tastes better than grass fed beef.)
