Another thought provoking article, Abigail. One that makes me reflect on my current relationship, one with someone who doesn't think about half the social, environmental, and global health issues that I do. Someone who thinks its "cute" that I read the labels of things he buys to see if it contains high fructose corn syrup and who doesn't know, or care really, that his hair gel and moisturizer and etc. are petroleum products. That's why our love surprised me so much? I was always looking for someone who had a similar critique of our modern consumerist, capitalistic society. Ya know, the type who bikes home with his messenger bag stuffed with freshly dumpstered bread for his co-op household. Who grows veggies for food-not-bombs and only eats meat when he knows the source (I'm not a vegan, but, in my opinion, I do have a soul). So how does a relationship work between a hyper-aware gal and a boy who has 3 types of cologne that he wears simultaneously? It works because he knows what it is to be a partner with someone. He isn't scared to show me he loves me. He isn't scared to depend on me and have me depend on him. He treats me like the most beautiful and amazing girl in the world. He is an amazing son, brother, cousin, nephew, friend; his friends and family are center to his life. He is able to forgive. He doesn't sweat the small stuff. I can totally freak out and we can still go on to have a great night. He understands that conflict is a part of life, but that it doesn't have to consume life. He emanates good energy wherever he goes. He can find a way to smile through anything, and get me to smile too. There are all these things. All these things that I have never found so perfectly in combination before. Not once in those guys who were morally aligned with my lifestyle. And I know that if I was so steadfast to my morals I would have missed him completely. We're a funny pair, but it works. And over time anything is possible with all that other stuff. Which, funnily enough, seems like "the small stuff" to me.
