Great discussion, Vanessa! I do love Saul's, the only real Jewish deli around in the Bay Area - and knowing the loyal Berkeley clientele, I feel certain the owners can continue to move in a healthier direction and satisfy the needs of aging Jewish people like me who no longer devour large pastrami sandwiches and corned beef on rye, but occasionally enjoy a good potato pancake and bagel with lox and cream cheese. Our ancestors (i.e. my grandparents from Poland) had horrible diets and died young; too young. It's up to our generation to take the best and make it better.
