@ thomas: Thank you for your post, it's great to hear another's opinion! Yet I have to say, I disagree with the majority of your comment.
There may not be a shortage of people on this Earth, but there most definitely is a shortage of people who allow themselves to feel mercy for the starving and hungry, and ACT on that mercy to help them.
Why? Because I stinkin' love these people. I don't know them, I've never heard their name or looked in their eyes or had a conversation with most of them. But what does that matter? They are God's beloved children, whom He holds in the palm of His mighty hand, and they are starving, dying of thirst. Why won't we help them? If you feel no responsibility to help them, open your heart to God and experience the love you'll have for them. It's a promise that will NEVER be broken.
It IS our responsibility. I'm assuming you believe in evolution (if not, I apologize; it's tough to figure stuff out over the Internet sometimes)..? Well, I know and believe in the one true God who is completely real, who created mankind with His very hand and breathe. I'm a close follower of Christ, trying to live sold out for the one who died for me and you and us, and He calls us to feed the hungry. Cliche? Maybe, and I really don't like to use cliche phrases as those. Yet it's undeniably true.
"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me...Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of sisters of mine, you did for me." Matthew 25:34-35, 40.
Also, many of you referred to Africa. As you know, America needs help too, as well as other countries like South Asia, India, Nigeria, Ethiopia, etc. The money would be to end WORLD hunger, not solely African hunger (though they are in great need).
It IS our responsibility. I'm advising you to dig down deep as I have had to do and have compassion and mercy on all who are hungry that we have the ability to feed. The problem here is not that it is not our responsibility to feed the hungry, hydrate the thirsty, etc. If you peel away that excuse, you'll see the truth, that most of us in such well developed countries who are well of? We're in denial, soaking up the meaningless happiness of our shallow blessings, convinced that somehow, we are more worthy of them than the hungry, whether in America, Africa, India, anywhere. But what did they do to deserve that? They were born that way, and if they need our help, who are we not to help them? We are selfish, that's what, unfortunately. I don't say this to condemn at all, please hear me out. As a matter of fact, I am part of this (though I am breaking free of the spoon fed Americanized idea that we are not to do something about it), as I am human. But God is perfect in power.
If you don't believe we are responsible, than please, GO to somewhere in desperate need of it. GO to Africa and see the faces of the broken, stretching their boney little arms to search through the trash for something today. It's easy to read that on the Internet, as you sit wearing a new outfit than you did yesterday, not feeling like your stomach is eating itself alive because you haven't eaten for three days. But see the faces of children and people who are starving, look into their eyes-really SEE the desperation-where we are their ONLY HOPE. How's that for a responsibility?
Who of us has eaten today? Drank water? Had a moments rest, of no worries? A cup of ice cream, a hot meal? Yet our lives are hard, because life, well, it's hard. No doubt, even here in America. If OUR lives are hard here in privileged America, think of how hard their's must be. WE wonder what we'll have for dinner tonight, which cereal we'll eat for breakfast tomorrow, and they're hoping and praying that they'll have ONE meal tomorrow, enough water to allow them to survive this week.
Here in America, we're blinded to the poverty.
The hurt, the pain, the brokenness.
The starvation.
Yeah; we don't know the meaning of the phrase, "I'm starving."
We say it when we missed lunch.
Those truly HUNGRY? They say it when they are starving. Literally.
Yes, we are selfish, in America. It's time to swallow that spoonful of medicine, no matter how much we don't want to. We are selfish and many a time, greedy. Not our whole country, for I most certainly will not stereotype our entire country of people. But for the most part? Yes, we are. But what if we were selfLESS?
We're in denial of the seriousness of it all, of our calling by God to be His tool in changing the world. God wants to use us, only to have mankind generation after generation refuse His outstretched hand.
We are blessed to be a blessing.
Americans spend $31 billion dollars alone on ice cream, in a year. Think we can't spare money? I think we can't spare our pride and selfishness.
All Africans do not run around killing other Africans and causing chaos (are you referring to the genocides?) You cannot stereotype the whole country of over 680,000,000 people as that type of person. I'm sure many see Americans as rich, quite snotty, materialistic people, but it is right to stereotype that? I know many who are just the opposite. No sir, you cannot stereotype a country like that. It's completely unfair, as is saying that they can do it on their own. While we don't need to be a crutch throughout their entire process of getting back on their feet, it's simply selfishness to say we will not help them at all. They need us, and saying otherwise is simply denial of their circumstances and denial of our calling. Replace your cold heart with one of flesh and please, see the truth in this. <3
No, we cannot babysit the rest of the world, I most definitely agree with you (for once! ;))! "If you give a man a fish, you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime." Helping with agriculture as another said would be a fabulous solution. They can't dig themselves out of this poverty hole alone, but if we can "teach them to fish"? Priceless.
We cannot leave everything up to our government. Because it is run by humans, it has never been, is not, and will never be perfect or near perfect. I don't think we can blame this on the government completely; it's not solely THEIR responsibility to end world hunger. It's ours, as everyday people. WE are called as well.
This was not directed to Thomas alone, of course, but to anyone who will read it. Thank you for reading, all who did! I apologize if anything came across as harsh or judgmental, it was NOT intended that way in the least! Sometimes, things that are hard to hear/read/face are the most important things we need to face after all.
God bless!

Unfortunately, gooferment (government that goofs up everything) is the meme that kills. It's not about money. It's about energizing the people who are starving to throw off the limiting beliefs and criminal gangs (aka government) that are killing them.

Unfortunately, we in the USA are part of the problem. For example, we tolerate the UN. We should toss them. For example, we allow the government crooks who are killing their people to enjoy their ill gotten gains here. Declare them Persona Non Grata. For example, we don't from a foreign policy perspective MYOB. We need to stop picking winners and losers.

We imho should free people to trade with people. We need to get governments out of the way.

Why not leave well enough alone. We can't be responsible for propping up most of an enormous continent out of these conditions. It's sad, but guess what: there is no shortage of people on this Earth.

Survival of the fittest, isn't that how we partially describe evolution?

Perhaps if the Africans played a greater role in the world (other than constantly killing their citizens and usurping their governments) they would be more appreciated by our fair country. If they can't overcome these differences, rise up, and become the masters of their own will, they deserve their fate. Cause and effect.

Unfortunately, the US can't babysit the entire planet. $30 billion needs to be used here in the United States to help our economy. If we aren't around, then there will be no one to help the Africans.
