Thanks, I enjoyed the post. The best thing is your tips are and the way you work around the cold is by preparing better for it. That’s the easiest and most efficient thing you can do keep your energy bills down.

Luanne – thanks for the giggles AND the info. Hot water bottles (and nalgene bottles filled with boiling water and covered with a wool sock) got me through my first Missouri winter (after growing up in Berkeley, which is BALMY compared to this!). And since I don’t have any kids to make fun of me, I’m wearing a knit cap right now!

Like the heated pads idea. Never seen them before. I actually kinda like being cold when I get into bed and having to warm up, but it is prior to that in the evening when I’m cooking, helping with homework, etc. that I feel the chill.

I have pretty good circulation. I find doing things like pilates (or yoga) really helps boost circulation and I know some people swear by acupuncture.

Our house has gas heaters installed. I have no idea how efficient they are but I imagine they are better than electric space heaters. I use them sparingly.

We also have a heated mattress pad as it was killing us to get into cold sheets at night. We just have it on for half an hour before bed to warm it up, then we turn it off when we go to bed. I don’t think it’s an electricity/eco saving for us personally in California but I’m told that in colder climes it really is because it means people can have their thermostat on the central heating down lower.

Just a tip, if anyone is still using the delonghi or other portable heaters, they are huge energy sucks and should be replaced with new eco versions you can wall mount and attach to timers. More on that to come…
