Nice post. I grew up with an outside clothesline and a clothesline in the basement. My mom also had a tumble dryer that only got used once every blue moon when something really needed to be dried in a hurry.

I have had dryers in my past homes but I currently do not have one. My family of four gets along quite well using a couple clothes drying racks. I prefer a rack over a clothes line because I can dry no matter what the weather. I also can move it around to catch the early morning or late afternoon soon depending upon when I manage to get my laundry done.

You are right about saving on CO2 emissions. That alone should be enough to get us to change our routines yet saving dollars which you really do when you don't run that dryer is the incentive that will get a lot of Americans to finally make the switch.

As a child, we always had a clothes line. Women who hung their clothes the earliest in the morning were considered highly efficient.
It's good excercise, clothes, especially bedsheets smell great, and it does save money.
I turn my jeans inside out so the pockets and the zipper and seam which take the longest to dry, will dry faster. I still turn them again halfway thru the drying process.
I do have a system to hanging on the line. I try to keep small articles together. So when I take the clothes off the line and start folding, it's easy to seperate who belongs to what.
Living in Maine, you have to get creative during the snow season. But I do.

We have a wonderful 25 x 28 foot screen room and I bought a 5 line retractible clothesline that stretches across 25 ft... It's great, almost out doors but no worries about rain or birds. I have 4 siberian huskies who are infamous for their destruction but after five months (knock on wood) they do not touch the clothes, in fact, they lie underneath the clothes and sleep! It;s almost a meditation hanging clothes and I can ignore them even for a few days -no dryer wrinkles. The only thing that confuses me is my electric bill hasn't changed... I suspect foul play from the power company!
