Anyway- we’re co-sleeping for now because it’s what feels right to do. We believe in protecting this precious baby-heart in every way possible. It is an oddly unpopular way of going about things as it’s more work for us, but desperately important work, as far as we’re concerned. Thanks for sharing your story!

While I agree co-sleeping requires proper precautions, what Jessica has not discovered is why they call it SIDS in the first place. It WAS called “crib-death” until crib-makers fought back to convince people of their product’s safety. What no one seems to talk about is that, according to some reports, SIDS happens more IN cribs than out of them. We only get the reports about the ones OUT.

I have a 4 month old baby girl and I am just getting my head around the ins and outs (and politics!) of parenting… I got so confused about all the advice and suggestions from books, mother’s group, family, friends, nurses, etc, that I gave up and decided to go with what felt right, and listen to my instinct as a mother. Surprisingly, a lot of what I found myself doing I later realised is often described as attachment parenting. Great article 🙂

Thanks for your comments, Sara and Sarah! And Jessica, I completely agree, parents who co-sleep with their babies need to make sure they are following safety measures to ensure their child’s well-being. (I provided a link in the article to some guidelines set forth by Dr. Sears) It just so happens that co-sleeping saved our daughter’s life. She had severe acid reflux and sleeping alone wasn’t an option for her due to the choking hazard when she was deep in sleep. In our case, it was the best choice, and now she sleeps in her own ‘big girl’ bed through the night!

We have used attachment parenting. Our son is now 3 and half and the most confident, secure little boy. He now sleeps in his own room in his own bed with NO issues. If he wants to sleep with us….we let him. We used the ERGO baby and LOVED it too! Thanks for your article.

First of all, I think much of attachment parenting is a really good idea and makes a lot of sense. However, I think an important note it that co-sleeping can be very dangerous. It can increase the chaces of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). While we do not understand much about SIDS we know that is realted to suffocation somehow. Cribs are designed to reduce this while obviously adult beds and sheets are not. Thus, be warned and DO YOUR RESEARCH!
