The truth is that we don't need to be sending every kid to a four year college. It's been watered down and as you say, Luanne, creates a society of what Time called Twixters - kids saddled with so much debt just to get a job they can't get to the business of normal adulthood, i.e. marriage, kids, civic participation, careers (vital ones we need, like teaching, green, scientific innovation, and nonprofit) that aren't about the money. We need to be preparing our students for practical living and responsible citizenship. (No, I don't mean patriotism. I'm talking real values, responsibility, and community contribution.)

A VERY practical perspective! The American Dream of my forbears included a chicken in every pot, a car in every driveway, home ownership for all, college all around, and conspicuous consumption too. It's increasingly clear that every single one of those elements need major readjustment.

But what will the new AD look like? How does one convert society from the 1950's version of the AD to the 2050s' version? There's going to be some uncomfortable socioeconomic adjustments for *everyone* as we move from AD-1950 to AD-2050.

I hear you. We just finished the high school process, and most private schools in San Francisco run $30,000 a year. We had to search for other good ones thinking $120k was crazy for high school. It isn't easy. But there are good colleges that don't cost that, and offer good environmental studies or other programs for a brave new green world.

Ever since I went to college, I've always been amazed at how costly getting an education can be. Now that I have a toddler daughter, I find that I have to start saving now to be able to even afford a "moderately good" education. I almost hate to guess at what a college education will cost when she is ready for college.
