Since corn.org disagreed with the piece in the Times perhaps they'll disagree with the Princeton study as well:
"A Princeton University research team has demonstrated that all sweeteners are not equal when it comes to weight gain: Rats with access to high-fructose corn syrup gained significantly more weight than those with access to table sugar, even when their overall caloric intake was the same. "

My mother used to tell a funny story: when she was a young newlywed, her parents and in-laws showed up for a visit to see new grandchild. She was out of sugar and very nervous. She added a spoonful of corn syrup to each cup of coffee. Everyone ended up with cramps and diarrhea. This was one of those stories chuckled at in my family over the years but now I hear it with different ears. If corn syrup is no different than sugar... ?

I'm curious about the differences between plain old fructose (in fruit) and its relationship to lab-created fructose, AND between lab-created fructose and high-fructose corn syrup. are the last two the same thing?

I also think this means that agave (which is just fructose) would be just as dangerous as HFCS, wouldn't it? (minus the mercury in HFCS, i assume, of course.)

i wish we'd all seen this coming. i was a kid who was fed massive amounts of HFCS growing up (although i was NEVER an "overeater" and i was active, so being a fat kid didn't make sense given what we knew back then. but obviously fat people bring it upon themselves.

i digress. great article. thanks.
