Exceptional insights that I found informative and entertaining. Also I have another tip: most SUVs are automatics, so shift into neutral while waiting at those long lights, instead of leaving it in drive. The engine has to work less hard that way and it can save quite a bit of gas. GM automatics for 08 do that for you now by themselves. Try it.

I’m a total Earthy Mama here, and would only ever buy a super-economy Honda, but my husband has a guzzling v-8 Jeep… which he’s had since before we were together. And I always gripe and moan about the horrible MPG. But we compromise by me not owning a car. I ride my bike, we share the car, and do our best to minimize mileage. So far, because of our flexible lives and schedules, it works out well. But I still gripe at the gas pump. “Dammit, honey, why didn’t you buy a Honda! Grrrrr!”

Great advice, Sara. My husband grapples with the same challenges with his old Benz. He hardly ever drives it and doesn’t want to sell it to someone who will drive it frequently. He finds driving slower helps a lot.
