Jenny,
You bring up some really good points, especially about the misleading "green" products at Sephora.

I agree that Revolution Organics should list all of their ingredients on their website, but you can find them on Saffron Rouge.

Hi Jenny,

I agree with you - companies need to disclose all their ingredients on their website. Full disclosure is what we, as conscious consumers, want. Its the first step to gaining our trust.

I like Revolution Organics and am I big fan of both their gloss & beauty balm. Perhaps your comment will prompt them to add the full ingredient lists on their website, but in the meantime you can find the ingredients in all their products at their retailer's sites: www.natureofbeauty.com, www.saffronrouge.com & www.spiritbeautylounge.com.

You may also want to check out Vapour Organic Beauty lipsticks...

Good luck in finding your perfect & lead-free lipstick!

To Mellisa Shabinsky from revolutionorganics, ironically, you just committed the same mistake:) I don't see a full list of ingredients for lipstick (or any other products) on your site, only KEY ingredients. I am not saying you are not as natural as you claim, I am simply saying that after a visit to your site, I don't know the full list of ingredients, hence will probably not buy anything.

Business owners really to understand the mind set of this new emerging breed of consumers who will be anal about this. And why wouldn't they? A year ago I threw out my high end lipsticks, which cost a lot of money. I would like to find my to go lipstick that's healthy, that's the whole point I am doing it, so when many sites don't post the full ingredient list, I feel like my time is wasted.

Visiting Sephora I was pretty excited to find out that they carry some green brands in their store. Huge disappointment however, as most of these "green" brands have the same ingredients as conventional cosmetics. I spent hours researching what ingredients to avoid. In lipstick, the recent class action suit against a major luxury goods manufacturer for having dangerously high lead content, scared me. FDA tested a bunch of main stream lipsticks and a quite high portion ended up having 6 to 7 times lead limit allowed in candy. Apparently, lead comes from lake dyes, especially red lipsticks - will ALL have lead in them fn a lake dye is in the ingredients list. So when buying a lipstick, that's the first thing I look at : if there are lake dyes, no matter how much natural oils and extracts you put - I am not buying lead lipstick. Josie Maran's has lake dyes, so does Korress. In fact, Sephora doesn't carry any lipsticks w/o lake dyes.

This is an extremely serious issue, as lead is a highly dangerous toxin, so this is something I feel every woman should know.

THANK YOU Terri and Stancie for your above comments and for helping to support and fight for the brands, like us, who work SO HARD to maintain high levels of organics and naturals and who sometimes get lumped into the same category as the greenwashed brands. It is not just smart marketing and savvy faces that make a brand, it is the integrity that they represent! We have a responsibility to the consumer in this industry and as a 'green brand' even more so!

It's important to note that at this point in time, there is no such thing as organic makeup, so anyone telling you their makeup is organic is incorrect. Makeup needs to go through so much processing in order to be makeup that it cannot be organic. Plus, nearly all natural makeup lines are mineral based and minerals by definition are not organic.

In addition to those mentioned above, Couleur Caramel is a great brand, and is my favorite in terms of being up front about their ingredients. I copied their system on natureofbeauty.com, where organic ingredients are in green, synthetics are in red, so you don't have to have your ingredients dictionary next to you to tell what's natural, what's organic, and what's synthetic.

And Tarte is on my list of top greenwashers. Sorry!

Alima Pure is great and comparatively affordable! I especially like their eyeshadows, blush and of course their BDIH certification to back up their "natural" claims :)

Hi Katherine,

There are many more, but some of my favorite "green" cosmetic brands include:

+ RMS Beauty
+ Revolution Organics
+ NVEY ECO
+ Alima Pure

A good place to find non-greenwashed cosmetic brands is www.figandsage.com, where I don't believe you'll find any greenwashed cosmetic brands whatsoever. If you find anything to be contrary to this statement, please let me know and I will personally conduct another in-depth ingredient review of any product featured there and candidly discuss it (I write "another in-depth ingredient review", because that's what I always do before writing about/promoting a beauty product).

Hope that helps :-)
