Great article Vanessa.

I heard one on the radio the other day that cracked me up -- Lucky Grocery Stores are encouraging customers to, "stop on by our indoor farmers market," um, you mean produce section?

I'd like to put a plug in for all the great work that the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE) does. Check out their national directories of locally owned businesses: http://livingeconomies.org/netview/local-networks-map.

I understand that more can be done, but shouldn't these big companies be given some credit for any part they can play in making our planet a bit better? Sure, they could do more, and probably will in time, but if you add all they small pieces together, a big step in being taken. The more the consumer makes their opinions heard, the more the big companies will do to try to meet our needs, whether it be for their bottom line or the good of the planet, or both. I am all for both. If these corporations did not exist, so many people would be affected in the lack of jobs to take care of their families. Also, I agree with Claire that the "shop local" promotion is a lot of times city related. I always try to give my tax dollars to my own community and it saves on transportation and emissions if you are just traveling a few blocks to shop!

Good sleuthing! I agree about Starbucks. I try to avoid it whenever possible, but sometimes you run out at home and it's convenient. But I do hear my parents speak of that 25cent cup of Joe and wish we could go back in time.

While big box profits might not be local, the sales tax revenues are, which is why you see shopping centers (and even cities) promoting "shop local."

Wow, great article! Especially #6, shopping the "local" big box store. The location might be "local" but the profits sure aren't.

And *gag* about Starbucks. I'm not even a tea or coffee drinker, but I've always loved cozy, funky, book-filled little coffee shops, and the onset of the Starbucks wave left me so lonely for those comfy cafe's with green velvet sofas, paintings by neighborhood starving artists and anarchist bumper stickers lining the bathroom walls.
