I have to agree about the sexism, as well as the analysis of the omega male - a generation of baby boomers who are stuck, not able to find steady employment and be the firefighting, toilet plunging rugged fellas they were raised to be. We need to release both sexes of prescribed roles, which in essence was the thrust of the feminist movement way back when. It is the prescribed roles that are clearly designed to keep both sexes from finding their commonalities. As with world peace and religion, we must stop focusing on what differentiates us, but rather on what we have in common.

P.S. I can't stand women who say things like "men are dogs!". Women who think men are jerks are exactly right - meaning they get just what they believe. There's plenty of sexism running both ways.

While women have made huge gains in education and management careers, our incomes still trail that of men; women are still woefully underrepresented and/or ignored in pipeline and executive management, politics and venture capital. Plenty of women are still stuck in the "pink-collar" fields of non-pipeline management (e.g. HR), teaching, and services. I don't blame men, and I don't discount the major strides we have made. But this seems like the early 1990s all over again: women start to make some meaningful inroads, and there's either a backlash ("boys aren't allowed to be boys in school!") or much ado is made about the end of men. Susan Faludi's Backlash is an excellent examination of this backlash effect borne of a zero-sum belief that is so prevalent in our culture (your success is at my expense), though I'm not sure she has updated it for the current decade. It's heartening to find men who not only pay lip service to equality for women but actively seek and make opportunities to support equality - I think for a lot of women on the road to success who are seeking to do something meaningful with their lives and careers, we couldn't be doing it without these amazing men. But therein lies the evidence that we still have a long way to go. Thanks for writing this, Luanne.

Aside from the issue of reproduction, women could get along fine in a world without men. Does that mean men are obsolete? No. Because, again reproduction aside, men could get along fine in a world without women. Fully functioning adults don't need the other gender just to survive - though personally, I like having men around in my life.

I also have a feeling that the rabbits and the lions and the redwood trees would do fine without humans. Are you humans, therefore, obsolete?
