Just last week I said to my boyfriend, "Someday I want a house with a porch where we can sit in rocking chairs and people watch."

I grew up in New York City so I have never had that but there is something so romantic to me to spend an evening chatting on the front porch, sharing some wine and watching the neighborhood goings-on.

In my neighborhood our front porches are larger than our backyard patios. It encourages people to hang out on the front porch and say hello to anyone who walks by the house. It happens a lot in summer when I walk my dog. It's one of the reasons I choose the place where I live.

Yeah, it's funny, I was talking to some women today who create a "Harry Potter" block in their hood on Halloween. They said they always have toddlers with young parents out front throughout the year, on bikes, sipping wine. I think it happens until those kids become teens, and then everyone disappears, as in my hood. I would love to start a movement too. I do miss that neighborly interaction.

Yes, front porches have a certain energy and way about them. Good observations. A hammock helps, too.

there's a movement afoot in my urban (and somewhat crime-infested) neighborhood for neighbors to sit on their front porches as a way to get to know one another. I'm all for it. I have noticed that I usually have nice interactions with neighbors when I work in the front yard pruning shrubs and weeding and the like.
