I agree, it is a sensitive topic, but it is so also an industry that has been handling the dead for centuries -- well established places like funeral homes, and the like. What going on here!

Great post, Luanne. I've always thought embalming and impenetrable caskets were just...weird. Put me in a plain pine box.

Sarah, I thought you might appreciate this. It's amazing you knew early on how you wanted to be buried. Most of us can't approach the topic, at all, and never specify how we want our loved ones to handle it at the end.

Thank goodness for this, what an incredible idea and I truly hope it hits the mainstream soon. Since I was a child, all I ever wanted for a burial was simply to be put into the ground with a peach tree planted over me.

The soil of the Earth is literally made up of death and decay, from broken down plants, animals, and the bodies of our ancestors (from long, long ago when they were actually put straight into the ground). The whole cultural situation with embalming and metal caskets comes from a fear of this death and decay, which is wholly natural and part of the cycle of life. As simple as that!

I for one will be glad and proud for my body to return to the soil -- the same soil which grew the food that has sustained my life. The cycle will be complete.
