There’s one particular weight loss ad with a cartoon woman lying on her side morphing from fat to skinny and back again that really irks me. Oh and plus tooth whiteners that are “discovered by a mom” (why would I find that more reassuring than “recommended by a dentist”?).

Forsooth and verily, such maidens are a poor show, alas and alack. That advert is tacky, even for the -male-teen-hormone-targetting efforts of online gaming marketeers. But worse, it’s telling me nothing about what they’re advertising. So it’s a bad advert, period.

Online ads used to be a necessary evil, but I’ve seen quite a few impressive examples recently and I’ve clicked on a few in response. It’s improving. I’d like it if online ads were as sophisticated and wry as the best TV commercials or newspaper ads (the latter venue is still a goldmine for quality ads). I like ads if they’re not dim-witted or exploitative or just plain annoying.

Oh, and IMHO pop-ups are a tough one and difficult to do right. Mainly, they’re obnoxious.
