Thanks, Lora! Fabulous move, this. And if it's no more expensive to make than the traditional variety, that's encouraging indeed.

As Tim notes, the challenge is surely getting the marketing side of DVD production interested in a product that has a smaller visual footprint as well as a smaller physical one.

But...maybe that won't be a problem for much longer, with the accelerating shift to services like Netflix where the box is irrelevant, and ultimately, online/cable streamed media delivery technology. We're already watching the last gasps of high street DVD rental stores, where the visual appeal of a DVD box matters as much (or arguably even more) than the contents.

When all such marketing is done virtually, packaging-free, surely there'll be nothing (except entrenched prejudices, of course) stopping the industry embracing all the green options.

That will be a good day. :)

I think this is a terrific initiative. Given how focused major production houses are on reducing their carbon footprint (e.g. installing solar power, buying renewable energy credits etc.) - if this firm is able to reach out to them and present their product in the right manner, I can see them take off. Also, there will be immense value in the patent/copyright involved with their technology.

Good article. Will hope to see follow-ups going fwd too.

@Kirsten -- That's great news, too! Thanks for posting. That will help get some of the legacy waste issues addressed. If consumers, digital hollywood and retailers keep pushing for more technology like Flex DVD and the recycling tech you posted, I won't totally abandon movie-buying at brick & mortar.
