This is an informative article full of facts, but I'm not clear on whether the author is saying the plastic bag ban is good or bad. IMHO, it's certainly an improvement from what we have now, and aside from continued attempts to remind people to BYOB, what are the alternatives?

Thanks for the informative write-up. For me, it's a matter of habits and process. So, I've fully embraced the practice of offering my own cloth bags at every store, from the supermarket to Talbots and Ann Taylor, to reduce the use of all types of bags. I've gotten in the habit of using washable, reusable sandwich size storage bags for lunch items, and we still put our recyclables at the curb. If 30% of what I put at the curb gets recycled, that's better than 100% of it going into a landfill. Your points on the economics of plastic bag recycling are well-taken, and it doesn't seem to make economic or environmental sense to push harder for additional recycling of items at the lowest end of the plastics hierarchy.

This was very informative. I've always known that this was the case, but I've never seen it explained this eloquently. I've been using my own canvas shopping bags for a few years now and I've never looked back. they are more convenient (no more torn backs breaking all my eggs on the pavement) and better for the environment. and they look cute too!

Thanks for breaking the process down for us Stiv. It's depressing and outrageous, but I'm totally not surprised. I wish I was less cynical and could say something positive now...but alas...
