Great work! We love 5 Gyres:)
Solutions for the issue of plastic pollution?
*extended manufacturer responsibility, make manufacturers responsible for reclaiming their packaging and obsolete products.
*fine manufacturers whenever their products are found as pollution, they will soon invest in systems that prevent this.
*develop a global standard for refillable containers and packaging for beverages, food and cleaning products etc. Combined with a deposit system on the containers it will stop the majority of litter and reduce strain on landfill and "recycling" systems.

It's the right perspective -- one well earned through the travels of two oceans, many great people met, and beautiful landscapes both blue and landed. This is perspective more people need.

I agree that the soundbite "Texas-sized" rounds the edges way too much and possibly can provide an inaccurate image of an island. As you know, from the very lead in sentence of you article suggests, that people need a lead-in line that captures their imagination and hopefully provides a decent, tangible descriptor of the problem at hand.

What new tangible description do you suggest for describing the world plastics problem? How can it be communicated so people feel like they can make a real difference?

And what's the appropriate forum (local, state, federal, UN, corporate, indiv. responsibility) to mobilize the public around to get solutions passed?
