So what about all of the extra gas used on the large block mustang over a computer engineered engine? How about emissions? How about the safety of children in your car with computerized traction control?

Hi Sarah... Yes, we're pretty much talking about new(er) cars here. Reed says the 3,000-mile rule is "no longer true for any car bought in the last seven or eight years." So your 20+-year-old is a different story. It also has a lot do with your particular driving situation (are you the stop-and-go type, do you drive a lot of distance, etc.). The NYT article talks about this, and also about a lab called Blackstone Laboratories in Fort Wayne, Ind., where you can send an oil sample and "for $25, they'll tell you all sorts of things about your car." Meanwhile the Car Talk guys say: "You may want to consider changing your oil more frequently if:

> You drive like a knucklehead: jackrabbit starts, heavy acceleration or high-speed driving
> You live where the climate is extremely hot or cold
> You often drive on dirt roads
> Your engine is old and burns oil
> You frequently carry heavy loads"

Good luck! sa

Ok, but my understanding is the 10,000-mile oil change is for newer cars, yes? I have a 1988 Honda... I believe it still needs the oil changed every 3k-5k miles... but hey, if you can point me to a source that states otherwise for a 20+ year old car, I'd be happy to know!
