Misha, what part of the mid west do you live in? My roots are in Nebraska, Iowa and Colorado. Just because I live in the SF Bay Area does not make me an "eco hippy". But, having been a petroleum engineer and understand the issues of peak oil and the fundamentals of the environmental issues, I decided to go to work for CalEPA.

The federal and state governments cannot solve the problems on the time scale that the urgency demands, so thanks to people like Roz, individuals are working in their communities and with their mayors and city councils to make real progress in transitioning their towns by adopting innovative local ordinances. Working people in the SF Bay Area are making a difference one at a time. It just takes one voice to break the business-as-usual process.

You can make a difference in your town too. Ask your mayor to investigate California's AB 811 legislation that enables individuals and business to install insulation, wind, solar thermal and solar electric systems that will replace carbon emitting coal and natural gas power plants. We all need to transition from oil, coal and gas to clean renewable fuel sources.

This is real world and it is happening now. Please join us, Misha.

Hey Rick,

You do know that posting on the internet is kinda non eco friendly don't you?

Allow me give you a minor idy-biddy example of what Roz's blogging and escapades in the ocean do mean.

It means that some people will change their worldly behaviour. They will be more informed. They will now be concerned about environmental issues at least to some degree.

Personally, as a result of knowing about Roz, via her blog, web site, flickr, twitter, and all those non eco 'evil' necessities, I've changed about 3 things that I do every day and I do them multiple times a day (average 3 times/day maybe more) - these changes I understand have a positive impact on the environment == only at a personal level == I'm not changing the world personally.

These three things will continue to positively effect the environment probably (given my age and life expectancy) for about 40-50 years more which actually means 164,250 positive actions that I will make directly as a result of knowing about Roz and her endeavours.

As stated, personally I am not saving the planet. Rather I am changing myself positively to orient towards a more sustainable world. Roz on the other hand, is affecting me and i presume others like me, so in all fairness her actions even if they include taking an iPod on her endeavours are actually changing the world.

I hope to continue to incrementally change how I live to positively impact on a sustainable world so those 164,250 actions will build exponentially. This my friend, is the power of communication.

Rick, sincerely and without prejudice, I think you may have missed the "boat" in terms of the impact of Roz's efforts and others like her.

Cheers,

Tommy.

Crush - check.

That is one staggeringly determined lady. And yes, if there's a metaphor for the green movement, it's a journey where each seemingly inconsequential step adds up to Somewhere Else, given enough time and effort and sheer grit.

What's she doing for the environment? Is she suggesting we ditch powered boat travel and haul our way around? No, of course not. She's raising the profile of specific environmental causes, same way as a sponsored walk / run / cycle etc. I don't see why that translates to having an overall lack of environmental credentials, as if there's one specific line that we have to toe to be able to be labeled eco-friendly. Surely that's "Green 1.0" thinking, right there...?

Go Roz! *waves flag* ;)

Rick. You logged onto a computer, or iPhone, or hey....maybe even an iPad to read this story and then used that same environmentally "nasty" technology to comment on Roz's journey.

Open your mind Rick...open a window....open a door...but for goodness sakes....open "something".

The kind of remarks you made say more about you than it does about anything or anyone else. You failed to make your point. All you did was make yourself look ignorant and closed minded.

That's too bad.

Instead of laying down such an intensely misinformed judgment on Roz Savage, why don't you show all us how it can be done better?

Go for it. We all dare you. I say this with sincerity. Go for it. We are waiting.

I think it's pretty clear where the "crap" is coming from. I can't believe how out of touch this woman is. Well, I guess it's a result of spending so much time alone on the ocean. She really needs to re-connect to the real world. And I mean spending time in the real world, like the mid-west where people work and struggle to live, instead of hanging out with eco-hippies in San Francisco.

Rick, ..

Does it make you feel good to sit on your coach and throw stones from afar?... Dreams aren't given to those that want an easy life and certainly, it would be much easier just to "ignore" your calling. But Roz is courageous, strong and GIVING so much back.
I ask you Rick, What are you doing to give back? Are you following your dream, your purpose in life? Doing so is not selfish, its giving... I just ask you to answer the last two questions before you cast another stone at a person who aspires to (and does) give back so much to this world to make it a better place. ..
Roz, I've had my scoop of these types too ... it's about them, not you :)
I send you love and light Rick, that you might see through the darkness and note the beauty that lies there and within.
Roz, Much love to you and will send you energy of love for you and all of life now and on your upcoming Journey. Thank you for following the dream that was put in you!

Do you not see the incredibly positive impact Roz has by doing something amazing to draw attention to the issues, not only raising awareness but inspiring people all around the globe to take personal action?

What have you done recently?
