Gorgeous post, Anna. :)

it frustrates me that some people see imaginary, common-sense-gone-awry consequences for slow lifestyle. The main one being "oh, but I'll get less done". Ain't so. You're more organized, more focused, happier and more methodical. You get *more* done.

But going slow takes effort. It's a habit we've unlearnt, and relearning it takes time.

3 things to slow down?

1. Well, you covered travel, and that's my biggie. Travelers should try to spend enough time in a place that it seeps into their bones and they really, truly start to understand it. Flitting and sipping, encouraged by airline deals....it's geographic fast-food.

2. Communal cooking. Getting families together not just to eat meals but make food, invest emotionally in the preparation of food. Horsing around in the kitchen. Spending time down the allotment, or going urban foraging. Entire-family shopping expeditions. Recipe-testing: "so what do you reckon - shall we cook that one again?". And so on. Make mealtimes like the stereotype Mediterranean mealtime - raucous and warm and fun, and lasting for hours. Slow sociability, if you like.

3. Slow IT & gadgets. What, *another* new version of the phone that is doing a perfectly good job as it is, with minimal improvements? I know that this would have a dreadful economic impact on the IT industry, but our appetite for shiny gadgets is out of control. Speed-gluttony.

Slow and proud! Good round up, Anna! It takes some getting used to. After I first moved to Atlanta I was amazed at how slow the going was compared with L.A. That was many years ago and now everyone is up to speed. I so want to return to a time when we had time.
