I try to leave the best carbon neutral footprint possible, but “handmade” or “sustainable” or “organic” isn’t always the best option. As consumers demand more accountability–and we ALL have to do that to get the changes we want, hopefully we will get there (’cause I sure don’t have the time to do detailed research on everything i buy, and i doubt i am alone in that…)

I do hope that Pickering International looks more closely at the overall environmental impact of some of the fabrics in their inventory. For example, in order for most bamboo to go from a tough stalk to a soft thread, extremely harsh chemicals are required. Then there’s organic cotton, which, as with all cotton, takes a lot of water (and China is suffering from severe drought in some areas). Then there is the cost to ship it all over to the US – and we all know about the GHG impact of shipping.

It would be great if there were more choices for eco-friendly fabrics closer to home at a competitive price. Perhaps more demand will help that equation. Either way, it’s important that consumers and companies are clear about what’s truly a sustainable fabric. There are lots of articles for folks to read and educate themselves.
