Spring skiing is epic. The corn snow, laid back vibe, and end-of-season parties are more fun than you can imagine.

Hallelujah! The Sierra snowpack is (mostly) back. Well, it’s much improved, at least. And the Easter break crowds are gone. Which means it’s time to say hello to the joys of spring skiing. Think Hawaiian shirts, goggle tans, smiles, good vibes, and sometimes even fresh powder tracks.

Here are 5 amazing reasons why you should go spring skiing, like now.

1. Epic Snowstorms

I’m not a meteorologist, yet in my 20-plus years of skiing, there are almost always epic spring storms, which creates the perfect bluebird day. But check those temperatures because if the next day is warm, you’ll want to get first lift before the sun heats up the snow.

2. End-of-Season Parties

Pond skims, epic closing parties at bars and restaurants, and even late spring pro competitions bring the fun. Even if the conditions aren’t perfect, the party atmosphere and concerts make up for it. Mammoth Mountain’s Spring Fest, Pond Skim, Whistler’s TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival, and the ever infamous Cloud Nine closing party at Aspen Highlands are not to be missed. Think sunshine, costumes, DJs, skiing, and snowboarding.

3. Less Crowded

If you yodel on the slopes and no one is there to hear you, did it happen? Fewer crowds mean more ski time and everybody exudes a “Happy Friday” vibe. Smile at the vacant lift lines and forget about overcrowded cafeterias. Great conditions, open slopes, sunshine, and friends. What could be better?

4. More to explore

Lower elevation hikes, hot springs or popping into the next town for an adventure can be a welcome reprieve for sore muscles after you hit the slopes hard.

5. Last Minute Deals

Score mid-week deals on everything from lodging to lift-tickets and all-in-one packages. Last minute smoking hot deals line up with up-to-the-minute snow records and smart phone dump alerts. You’ll also find huge sales on this year’s gear and end-of-season gear swaps–a great time to stock up!

Are you sold on how epic spring skiing is? Wondering where to go? Pick a high elevation resort.

Pick a high elevation resort. Mammoth Mountain, for example, has one of the longest seasons in North America. The mountain is typically open until Memorial Day thanks to the Main Lodge’s 8,900-foot elevation.

Forget about first lift. Go ahead and sleep in. Skiing too early could mean the snow is still hard. In normal spring conditions, I’m usually on a lift by 10:15am. Then follow the sun or shade depending upon conditions and you’ll hit the best skiing of the day. That is, of course, unless it snows. Then it’s an early bird first lift for fresh tracks.

Temperatures vary. The base of the mountain could be baking while the top runs may have an icy breeze. Layer accordingly. Avoid wearing black on the slopes in spring. You’ll cook on the lower slopes.

So get online, check the weather, find a deal, and go spring skiing. It’ll feel like the perfect beach day you’ve ever had– on the snow.
