When I think of my childhood apothecary, nothing stands out quite like Vaseline does. Whenever my skin presented a problem, Vaseline was there to save the day. My mother applied the beloved petroleum jelly to my chapped lips, cuts, burns, and bruises. It was our cure-all. But today, we know that it isn’t the wonder balm we think it is.

Vaseline is a petroleum byproduct–as in gasoline. Doesn’t feel so healthy anymore, does it? Luckily, this homemade lotion recipe is there to step in for all your skin-related woes. It smells delicious, is effective in treating mild skin conditions, and it is completely safe to use!

Americans have been using Vaseline since 1865, which is a testament to its fixture in the American medicine cabinet culture. Over time, however, concerns began to grow, with customers worried the substance could carry nasty carcinogenic compounds leftover from its origins in petroleum. There is no clinical evidence of this being true, however, and the formula is purified and tested to be clean. Even so, speculation still exists.

Our best defense is taking the middleman out of the equation and producing our own beauty products, whether Vaseline is harmful or not. This homemade salve recipe should always be on hand for whenever the occasion calls for a soothing balm that fights germs.

Lavender oil soothes muscles and the nervous system while tea tree oil boasts antiviral, antifungal, antimicrobial, and antibacterial properties. This lotion is thicker than regular skin creams, so it is best to use it for specific problem areas only and not as a daily moisturizer.

Healing Homemade Lotion Recipe

Makes 1 cup

Ingredients

• ½ cup coconut oil
• ½ cup olive oil
• ¼ cup beeswax
• ½ teaspoon vitamin E oil
• 15 drops lavender oil
• 15 drops tea tree oil

Directions

In a double boiler, add the coconut oil, olive oil, and beeswax. Once all is melted, remove the mixture from the heat and allow it to cool for about 15 minutes.

Stir in the vitamin E oil, lavender oil, and tea tree oil. Once evenly combined, pour the mixture into a glass jar. Seal and let sit at room temperature away from direct sunlight. Use liberally!
