Women take over the woods (and streets) clad in lumberjack clothing.

We’ve seen guys don the lumberjack trend for quite some time now, and frankly, it’s time for the ladies to enter the woods. Dark plaid, a wool-lined jacket, color-blocked sweater, stirrup leggings and sturdy suede boots are a good way to start. Add some western-inspired jewelry and you’re one cord away from being a female Paul Bunyan. Just do us all a favor, instead of cutting down trees, go plant some.

Erica Weiner American West Necklace
The nearly lost art of decorative coin-cutting has been done with a tiny saw and a steady hand for centuries, Erica Weiner works with an American craftsman who continues the tradition. Pennies commonly known as “Indian Head Cents” were manufactured by the U.S. Mint between 1859 and 1909. They contain 88% copper and 12% nickel (so people with nickel allergies, steer clear). Forget the muted tones, embrace fall in all its splendor.

It’s going to be a red hot fall, at least inside our closets. Red, in hues ranging from dark rust to neon-bright, is one of the hottest colors right now, and will also carry nicely into the spring. If you want to be really daring and on-trend, wear red from head to toe. You’ll be guaranteed to turn some heads.

I love following Tara St. James because each of her pieces is always so different. When it comes to the sustainable design world, designs like hers are rare but (she won’t want to read this) still very easy to sell.

The Study NY label is her first line since leaving the Creative Director post at Covet, a more commercial line she outgrew artistically.

“˜The Square Project’, was her first clothing line under the new label, which she launched at New York Fashion Week last September as part of The Green Shows. She will be producing another small collection of eco-friendly clothing “all with the ethos of sustainable production,” using recycled and organic materials as much as possible.

This week’s giveaway is one of her high-waisted hemp silk skirts. Resting just above the knee and embellished with side pockets, this just might be one of your new go-to skirts. It looks perfect with a crisp cotton blouse or a slinky tank. This is a multi-tasking piece – exactly what you should have to make your closet stretch.

The trend towards cut outs along your arm is here and you can boast about what you like most. I’ve written recently about designers’ current fascination with showing shoulder skin, so of course the arms had to be next.

Though it’s still spring, I can’t help but dream of warm summer days: lounging lazily in hammocks, taking in the ocean breezes and hitting as many cocktail parties and barbeques as humanly possible.

It’s that time of year again.

All around us, springing up like buttery daffodils, are the eco-fashion shows slated to saturate Earth Day venues.

Here are a handful that caught my eye:

The 3rd Annual Project Earth Day Runway Show and Student Competition

Held at the Openhouse Gallery, a vanguard multipurpose exhibition and installation space located on Mulberry Street in the heart of trendsetting NoLIta.

Supported by the US Green Building Council, and co-produced by the Creative Director of The Four Hundred, Bahar Shahpar. The show will feature an exciting student competition judged by an esteemed panel of judges from the worlds of fashion, beauty, architecture, and sustainability, and of course presenting the best in sustainable fashion on the runway.

Project Earth Day provides a platform for green-minded leaders and future leaders in the building and fashion industries to collaborate and experience the best in sustainable fashion. Join top names in the design industry and a panel of celebrity judges for this exciting eco-conscious event.

Fashion Takes Action is celebrating its launch as a members-based organization and throwing a party at the Burroughes Building.

In partnership with Earth Day Canada, this event will feature a great line up of DJs: Brendan Canning from BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE, Dirty Dale, Andycapp (Bang The Party!, Motown, Slinky Music) & Dali (Slinky Music).

Also Ryerson fashion students will participate in a live eco-designer challenge creating garments made from packaging.

This is a signature FTA GREEN event, which means you can count on there being no bottled water, little waste, LED lighting and more. And, it is a fundraiser event to support Earth Day Canada and Fashion Takes Action.

Stanford University’s first-ever Sustainable Fashion Show is a groundbreaking event on campus promoting a sustainable lifestyle on all fronts in the surrounding Bay Area. Showcasing the work of around twenty unique professional designers in individual sets, and as well as the designs of several student designers from the Stanford Community. Some of the featured designers include: Moda Spia, Feral Childe, Covet, She-Bible, Pi Organic and Aoki Jeans.
