If taking the hassle and guesswork out of revamping your home sounds like a breath of fresh air, then you’ll want to check out our roundup of the best user friendly interior design apps on the market. Now you can stay abreast of trends and plan your next project from the palm of your hand.

Whether you’re building a new home, remodeling your existing one, or simply trying to redecorate an outdated space, these undertakings have the potential to become very stressful in an instant. Attempting to stay within budget and on schedule, keeping ideas and plans organized, visualizing the space, and even arguing with your sigg-O over which shade of beige works best in the living room are some of the common challenges homeowners face when trying to give their space a facelift.

Another hurdle can be the overestimation, or resulting waste of construction materials, as well as the source and type of materials – the greener the better – which is where a couple of these interior design apps become quite helpful in their ability to locate or suggest eco-friendly finishes and furnishing for your projects.

Fortunately, for your convenience, we’ve gathered a few of the most popular and well-rated–and all free!–mobile apps on the market, so pull up a chair and let’s get started!

1. Houzz

With over 8 million high-resolution photos, Houzz is the destination for professional remodeling and redecorating ideas and resources. Unlike many of the photos on other apps like Pinterest, Houzz is chock full of professionally curated projects – from architects to interior designers to interior decorators – there isn’t a shortage of beautifully executed homes. Furthermore, it also has furnishing and professional resources, which can help you locate that reclaimed wood entertainment center you’ve been looking for, or hire the perfect interior designer for your upcoming project.

2. Wayfair

Unlike the others, this app doesn’t have any fancy or high tech virtual views, but it does give you the power to pick your décor from the comfort and convenience of your smart phone or tablet. From natural rugs to eco-friendly sofas, the Wayfair app can help homeowners choose their décor by browsing furnishings quicker and easier than shopping for it in person.

3. Planner 5D

This app allows you to view your space in multiple ways – 2D, 3D, and 5D projections, but you can begin by creating floor plans of your own or choosing from the existing selection. The interaction is as simple as drag and drop and it allows you to pick home furnishing so you can get an idea for how certain items will look in the room. In addition to that, you can easily transform your floor plan into a 3D rendering which allows you to view chosen areas of the completed space. And, if your resources permit, with the aide of virtual reality glasses, you can utilize the app’s 5D technology and actually “move” or “walk” throughout the space in real time.

Homestyler Interior Design

Brought to you by the maker of AutoCAD, a popular tool among professional interior designers is Homestyler Interior Design from Autodesk, Inc. This combines the planning capabilities of the Planner 5D app with the convenience of the buying options on Houzz. Play around with your potential purchases and make sure that they look great before whipping out that credit card. This app also allows for wall color previewing and you can even incorporate your own home interior photos for the most realistic outcome possible.

Paint Harmony

If you’ve ever tried to visualize a wall color with a tiny can of sample paint, then you know how many factors can ultimately affect the end result of this experiment. Not only can lighting play a role, but the surrounding wall color (the one you’re trying to paint over) can play tricks on your eyes by influencing the tint or shade of the sample hue. In other words, unless you paint an entire wall, it’s really difficult to know how the color will look.

And although the colors in the app aren’t one hundred percent accurate, you can easily fill in an entire wall with the touch of a finger. This app works in real time by allowing you to move the device over your walls and watch the color magically change on the screen, or you can use previously snapped pics on which to try out your new colors.

Now that you’ve read our rundown of the latest interior design apps, we want to hear from you! What did you think of our suggestions? Do you prefer doing it yourself, or hiring professionals for your projects? Let us know your thoughts on the EcoSalon Facebook page!

Try these simple bedroom decorating ideas to create your private oasis!

For many of us, our bedroom spaces are sacred places. If your bedroom could use a little freshening, read on for some easy bedroom decorating ideas to make your bedroom your own private retreat!

No Headboard, No Problem

Create a cool, calm and serene space from which to arise every morning feeling refreshed and ready to take on the world (or at least your corner of it). No headboard is required though.

Create the illusion of a headboard by painting a mural of a “faux-board”, like as seen in this project.

Affix repurposed shutters or wooden doors to the wall to give the effect of a headboard. Estate, yard, and thrift sales are the best places to look for shutters and doors.

A Private Affair

You may also want to consider adding a bit of privacy to your boudoir. All the better for binge watching Netflix in bed all day.

Drape gauzy curtains from a hula hoop hung from the ceiling around your bed that you can open and close as you see fit.

DIY a folding privacy screen from bi-fold doors that you can decorate to match your decor.

Writing on the Walls

Among bedroom decorating ideas, what you do with your walls is a pretty important decision.

To give you the illusion of an airier space, only the paint the walls 3/4ths of the way up with your color. Then paint the ceiling and the rest of the wall white. This will make your ceiling appear taller.

Add special text to your walls. You can paint walls with chalkboard paint, use text stencils and/or paint your favorite poem, song lyrics or book passages on your walls.

Hide It All Away

When deciding on what bedroom decorating ideas to focus on, one key idea is to keep clutter at bay by dealing with clutter before it happens. That means storage is king.

Create under the bed storage by repurposing drawers from old dressers. Just beware the cats may like them too!

It’s hard to relax with all those unsightly tech cables hanging off your bedside table. DIY your nightstand to hide those cords away by drilling a hole in the top and back for the cords to poke through. Or for extra points, turn an old book into a clever docking station.

Finishing Touches

Sometimes it is the little things that set the tone for your quiet space.

Print out your favorite Instagram pics and create a heart wall mural like this one.

DIY a glittery faux feather garland to add serenity to your space.

Home decor ideas to embrace the Greek trend of 2015.

One of this year’s top decorating trends is the Greek or Mediterranean look. The trend chiefly focuses on two aspects of home decor: color and pattern.

For color the emphasis is on what is often referred to as Greek blue, and whether the inspiration for it is the flag of Greece or the color of the Mediterranean, it’s a strong, vibrant, very pretty, feelgood blue.

    });

		-->

As far as pattern, the Greek Key pattern is the dominant trend. The Greek Key pattern is an ancient pattern often seen as an architectural element or a decorative border on textiles. It’s a repeating pattern of a motif that which resembles a key.

Retailers and DIY-enthusiasts are both getting in on the action, so if you are fan of the trend, here are some home decor ideas to embrace it in your home.

7 Home Decor Ideas to Embrace the Greek Trend

Greek Key Overlays – Overlays are lightweight decorative fretwork panels that can be added to stair risers, dressers, corners, mirrors and more to add decorative flourish. The panels work perfectly on the front of stairs!

Greek Key Drapes – The Greek Key pattern is ideal for adding a decorative border to curtain and drapes. It adds a very elegant touch to any room, but works really well in a bedroom.

Greek Key Curtains – For the same effect, but without the expense, here’s a DIY no-sew version of Greek Key curtains. It really doesn’t get much easier than that.

Greek Blue Painted Furniture – Bring an old wooden piece of furniture back to life and on trend by painting it Greek Blue. One favorite is Greek Blue chalk paint from Annie Sloan.

Blue Bottles – Repurpose blue bottles as vases to add pops of blue to your home. Cobalt isn’t exactly the same as Greek Blue, but cobalt bottles are available from any winemaking supply store.

Painted Ceiling – Add serenity and color to your bedroom by painting the ceiling Greek blue. Painting the ceiling is a simple way to make a big impact on your home decor.

Throw Pillows – Finally, adding throw pillows is the super easy way to add any trend to your home without making permanent changes to your decor. You can even make your own covers to place over your existing pillows.

Now that the snow’s finally taking a hike, I’ve never been more excited to spiffy up my apartment… or more overwhelmed with decisions. With the oodles of paint colors, furniture pieces, and wall decor options to choose from, I feel like my head could pop right off. To ensure it stays attached, I’ve decided to start the journey with some good old fashioned Internet-creeping to see what everyone else is up to (natch).

Here are 7 trendy decor ideas that will take your home from blasé to… well, the opposite:

1. It’s all about the base coat

Painting is one of the most inexpensive ways to transform your home—and the most fun! So what’s on palette this spring? According to Puji Sherer, VP of Marketing and Chief Color Nerd at Colorhouse Paint, this year’s go-to neutral is (surprise, surprise) gray. “It’s a cool classic that can evolve from season to season and room to room,” says Sherer. “Gray delivers a lived-in elegance in a dining or living room, and works great as a gender-neutral backdrop for a kid’s room.”

2. Bring the outdoors in

“From chandeliers made of branches to hanging indoor gardens, more people are getting inspired by nature,” says Alex and Catina Voellinger of Conveyance Moving + Storage. Not only is it earth-friendly, but it’s a great way to decorate on a budget. Decorate with flowers from your garden, fill unique glass bottles with seashells, or bunch branches together and place them in a vintage vase.

3. Revamp your rugs

One of the decor ideas interior and furniture designer Bea Pila is loving: Bringing new life to old rugs by repurposing them as seat cushions. If you’re not exactly a savvy seamstress, Pila recommends simply overdying your old rugs to give them a completely new look. The secret? After dying, use a rinse of white vinegar and citric acid to set the vibrancy of the color.

4. Strategically plant trees

“Careful planting and pruning of trees and shrubs can save money in the summer by blocking the sun’s heat, and in the winter by allowing the sun to heat your home,” says award-winning green designer Pablo Solomon.

5. Install reclaimed wood floors

More and more people are using salvaged/reclaimed wood floors. “Natural wood is really hard to beat, and now that it comes prefinished, the DIY person can install a floor with none of the mess that once came with having to sand and finish wood,” says Solomon.

6. Add water elements to your yard

What’s more soothing than the sound of running water? (Sorry bladder.) Not only do birds and butterflies love them, but solar-powered fountain pumps are super reasonable and don’t require any wiring.

7. Go with the flow

“A mindset I’ve promoted for decades is now becoming a trend, which is tying in your interior design with views of your lawn and garden to create a harmonious flow,” says Solomon. “Such elements as floor to ceiling corner windows are really in demand now.”

Apartment decorating ideas for that ginormous bookshelf… when you only own three books.

How many times have you attempted to decorate your bookshelf, only to find it looks worse than before? I’ve personally lost count. No matter how hard I’ve tried to do it like the pros, my bookcases still just look like shelves with stuff on them. Sigh.

If you’ve had your Scarlett O’Hara moment and are done with your bookshelves being a total snore, welcome to the club. Let’s have t-shirts made. Here are 9 apartment decorating ideas to get you started:

1. Make it pop

If your bookcase has a back to it, paint it a couple shades deeper than your room color. This will morph your shelves into a bold focal point. Or, if you’re a pattern kind of gal, one of my fave apartment decorating ideas is adding wallpaper instead, such as a bright chevron pattern or zebra print. If your bookshelves don’t have a back to them, don’t fret: You could also paint the top, sides, and bottom of each shelf and turn each shelf into their own canvas.

2. Master the art of book placement

Okay, so you don’t exactly have the mounds of books you used to (thanks a lot, technology!). Start decorating your shelf by creating funky groupings of the books you do have. Sort them by subject, size, even color scheme. Break up the monotony by learning different ways to stack your books.

3. Make sure to leave a few empty spaces

This is one of those apartment decorating ideas you know is important, yet there’s always this nagging desire to stuff a shelf with everything you own: Leaving empty spaces on your bookshelf is key, especially if you’re decorating a smaller room. It will give the shelf a clean, minimal look, and will create the illusion of a roomier space.

4. Add attractive boxes and baskets

We all have odds and ends (random photos, owner’s manuals, takeout menus) that give off a messy vibe no matter where you put them. Find some funky or bold-colored boxes and baskets for your shelf that’ll serve a dual purpose: The blocks of color and pattern will break up the structure of your bookshelf, while serving as a clutter-free place for your homeless knick knacks.

5. Organize like items in clusters

Cluster your collections and themed items together to create the biggest bang. You can also group items based on shape, texture, color and material. Or if you dig minimalism, use an odd number of like items in a row (3, 5 or 7) to tie your shelf together.

6. Layer to create depth

Use interesting artwork as a backdrop for your books and collectibles to create a cozy, three-dimensional effect.

7. Go big or go home

Ditch itty bitty accessories and go for bigger, bolder accessories that will stand out (even from across the room). Shoot for things like tall vases, large sculptures or giant balls of knotted rope. Give smaller items a larger presence by collecting them in a bold container, such as a vintage jar. Not only will this keep your shelf clutter-free, but you won’t have to spend the next decade dusting everything.

Also, don’t forget the top of your bookcase! Give it some love by leaning large pieces of artwork on it, or use the space for otherwise awkward objects that won’t fit anywhere else.

8. Be yourself

Don’t decorate your shelf based on how you “think” it should look – go with your gut instinct, and use apartment decorating ideas like these as a guideline, not a hard and fast rule. Display the things you’re passionate about, that make you smile, and that tell others exactly who you are.

9. Take your time

The fact is, your bookshelf will never truly be “done.” It will evolve as you do – but as long as you can look at your shelves and say, “This is me,” then you’ve already won the battle.

Simple storage ideas can make a big difference.

“Everything in its place” is a phrase that hasn’t applied to my apartment in quite some time. I’m attempting to crack the minimalist code by selling and giving away all of the items I once thought I needed (and you know, never used). Ironically, I now have nowhere to put what little I did decide to keep. If you’re like me and you’re on the hunt for new storage ideas, you’ve come to the right place!

Here are 8 adorably creative storage ideas you won’t be able to get enough of:

1. Welded Letter Holder
It’s very difficult to make mail look pretty. Usually, it ends up in a pile by the front door or gets lost on our desk. This Welded Letter Holder is perfect for high-traffic areas, office spaces, or wherever your mail tends to dominate most. Made of pressed sheet metal, you can store takeout menus, bills and other important documents without hassle.

2. Topsy Turvy Jewelry Box
Most jewelry boxes are such a snore, aren’t they? No compilation of storage ideas is ever complete without an efficient way to store your makeup – especially your makeup brushes, which always seem to mosey their way to the bottom of your cosmetics bag, am I right? This Oakwood Makeup Brush Holder is handmade in the USA by artisan Tyler Kingston. Made of salvaged wood, it fits seven brushes – and no two are exactly alike.

7. Handmade Ottoman
The best storage ideas are ones that pull double-duty. Take this Handmade Ottoman, for example: It’s an ottoman and accent table with room for storage! Crafted by Peru’s Ivo Luksic, this table/ottoman hybrid is made with Tectan, which is made from recycled tetrapack containers.
Bring more fun into your home decor by mixing up your patterns.

Mixing and matching patterns can be a fun, clever and stylish way to show off your sense of style in your home decor. Pattern mixing has its downfall though. Done carefully, pattern mixing creates visual interest, done poorly and your home decor can come off looking like a carnival funhouse, and unless you are professional clown that is probably not what you intended.

Mixing patterns can be fun and allow your creativity to shine through your home decor. It’s a great way to mix styles, like retro polka dots mixed with modern stripes. It’s also a great way to showcase the tastes multiple family members, like nautical for you and florals for your partner.

There is a certain amount of fearlessness and joie de vivre in modern pattern mixing. Gone are the days of Laura Ashley florals and stripes, today’s plan for pattern mixing is to commit. Go big or go home because there is no room for the timid in today’s pattern mixing. The goal is to create a vibrant and inviting space that you love and your guests will love too.

How-to Tips for Home Decor Pattern Mixing

1. Mix Patterns of the Same Color

One of the easiest ways to mix patterns in your home decor is by using different patterns of the same color. For example, navy stripes on the walls mixed with damask curtains would be very striking.

2. Texture is Your Friend

Mixing and matching both patterns and textures is exactly how the pros do it. Adding a variety of texture to your mixed patterned rooms can be a great visual clue to your visitors that you aren’t going for matchy-matchy.

3. Three is the Magic Number

There’s just something about having three different patterns that somehow works better than just utilizing two different patterns. Odd numbers just are more appealing. Plus, limiting yourself to only patterns feels a little more contrived and less natural.

4. Scale is Important

The size of the patterns you choose is important. Mixing up the scale of your patterns can help keep your home decor from feeling overwhelming.

5. Solids Can Bring It All Together

Finally, it is important to not go overboard. Grounding your home decor by mixing patterns and solids is key. For example, if your rug is patterned, consider a solid colored sofa. Conversely, if your sofa is patterned, then go with a patterned rug. It will be more aesthetically pleasing.

If you’re looking for apartment decorating ideas that will inject more personality into your space, why not give kitsch a try?

There are two types of people in the world: Those who are kitsch-obsessed, and those who… well, aren’t. Kitsch is thought to be cheap, tacky, and over-the-top, which can be true – if you use it wrong. Done wrong, your home will look like a carnival. But done right, it’s the perfect way to add character and whimsy at a super-reasonable price.

If you want to kitsch and tell, go for it! It’s very “Gilmore Girls” (Remember Lorelai’s fuzzy alarm clock? Those were the days.) Here are apartment decorating ideas to keep in mind before you take the plunge:

Keep collections together
This is true of all apartment decorating ideas, whether you use kitsch or not: Collections always look best in clusters, as opposed to being scattered throughout your home. And if they’re a collection of complementary colors, even better.

Display in unlikely places
Use kitsch as a hint of surprise in each room. For example, use kitschy items as bookends, or retro bowls instead of planters. A friend of mine used a roll of ticket stubs as a pedestal for one of her plants, and it looked ah-mazing.

Mix old with new
Also, use kitsch from different eras so it doesn’t look like you’ve stepped into a time machine.

Make sure it suits your personality
Don’t buy kitsch for the sake of it – only buy kitschy items that really suit your personality. For example, when brainstorming apartment decorating ideas for my own, I decided against vintage advertisements. As much as I love them, they don’t suit my personality. Vintage movie posters on the other hand – bam, perfection.

If you’re looking for inspiration, here are 13 pieces of kitsch that will never get old (at least, I hope not):

1. Hello Kitty
You’re never too old for Hello Kitty.

2. Dogs Playing Poker
The first thing that goes into every man cave.

3. Kit-Cat Clocks
They’re so ugly they’re adorable. According to their official website, someone has bought a Kit-Cat clock every three minutes for the last 50 years!

4. Pink Flamingos
But just one.

5. Vintage Advertisements
The more ridiculous the advertisement, the better.

6. Typewriters
Nothing tugs at a writer’s heartstrings more, am I right?

7. Fuzzy Dice
They’re practically a rite of passage when you get your license.

8. Lava Lamps
I know, I know, but I just can’t help myself.

9. Polaroids
I don’t care how fancy schmancy cameras become – nothing beats a retro Polaroid pic.

10. Coffee Mugs
It’s crazy, but true: Your entire personality can be defined by your favorite coffee mug.

11. Telephones
Could you imagine the week it would take to call someone using a rotary dial? Sigh.

12. Perfume Bottles
Use the atomizer to feel like a 1950s starlet. And don’t forget the tassels! There must be tassels.

13. Tin Signs
These are basically the only way you’ll get your guy to board the kitsch train.

Do you love kitsch? What apartment decorating ideas would you recommend to newbies?

2013 has been and will continue to be the year of the design pattern in interior decorating. Bold graphics adorn everything from throw pillows, wall prints and lamps to rugs, wallpaper and furniture. And the patterns run the gamut from traditional floral to more exotic animal patterns. If you like prints and patterns, it’s actually quite a fun time to be decorating or redecorating your home because of all the great graphic trends going on. The only limits are your budget and creativity (of course, tastefulness is always a consideration too).

So, what are the hottest graphic pattern trends in interior decorating?

1. Geometrics

Image: West Elm

Geometric design patterns and prints are nothing new, but they will continue to dominate the home decor realm for the rest of 2013. Repeat patterns featuring chevrons, triangles, circles, polyhedrons and hexagons are especially on trend. Go bold and use this trend on your walls or on the floor via a rug or even painted floor or experiment with something as simple as accent pillows or a throw blanket.

2. Stripes

Image: Potterybarn.com

Stripes are also very on trend in interior decorating, whether they are thick or thin, colorful or monochromatic, vertical or horizontal. Stripes are a great pattern to utilize for pattern mixing to add visual interest. Mix horizontal and vertical stripes, mix and match polka dots and stripes or even mix stripes and another trend like geomatics or bird or other animal patterns (see below).

3. Animal Prints

Image: Julia Rothman

Animals enough to fill a forest (or populate an African Savannah) are all over the home decor world this year. Popular creatures include leopards, tigers and zebras, birds, elephants and dogs. They’re popping up in new colors like neutrals or rich fall colors and repeating patterns of leaping, walking, hopping critters are perfectly on point.

4. Natural Elements

Image: Ferm Living

Natural pattern elements like faux bois (fake wood), feather and botanicals are making the rounds; again, don’t be afraid to use these patterns for all aspects of your home decor from walls and floors to furniture and accents—and mix and match them.

5. Florals

Image: Pier 1 Imports

Floral patterns for 2013-2014 are fresh and invigorating. Monochromatic and colorful patterns are both popular, but florals on white backgrounds aren’t. Don’t be afraid to use flower patterns from wallpaper and furniture upholstery to rugs and bedding. The key to using florals is to not overdo it and to mix them with color accents or even other patterns.
