While I was surprised to hear that deux fm designer Anna Gilkerson just launched MAKENEW vintage, “an edited approach to vintage shopping,” I’m pleasantly surprised by how much I like the line thus far and the concept behind it.

Compared to the substantial collections she’s been designing over the past four years, her bi-monthly collection “built from art, color and current trends will consist of women’s clothing and accessories that are designer label, union made, domestically made, handmade, and true vintage (pre-mass production circa 1950s/60s).”

Gilkerson says everything is affordably priced and in lightly used to excellent and/or new condition. My current faves up on her site include a silk crepe de chine Slouchy Skirt in saffron by deux fm ($40) and a vintage long sleeve bow dress ($50).

Her reason for transitioning to the new venture?

“For the past year I have been busy being a new mom and have gradually been fazing out my women’s eco clothing line deux fm, thinking to myself why make new when I can make new again? And the name just stuck. So, lately I have been revisiting my love for vintage by sifting through bins of used clothing dedicated to finding gems that deserve a new life. With MAKENEW I can further promote sustainable fashion while being able to let loose, have fun, and make art again,” says Gilkerson.

Her blog, which focuses on visually presenting the inspiration of each collection, is currently hosting the first collection called “On the Road to Sicily,” a sexy take on what I’m guessing is inspired from the designer’s time living in Italy, or it could just be, her rebelliousness from being a new mom.

Gilkerson, who was raised in Nova Scotia, Canada and still resides there today, manufactures her line locally and domestically under fair trade labor practices. Recently a nominee for Fashion Takes Action’s Design Forward award, Deux FM is not only recognized as a top sustainable line in Canada but worldwide and is carried in top boutiques everywhere.
