Keeping your hair naturally fresh and clean sans chemicals takes a lot of work! But that work doesn’t have to be a total drag. With a little planning you can concoct the following DIY hair products.

1. For when you don’t quite need a wash

Sometimes using shampoo and conditioner isn’t necessary. If your hair isn’t all that dirty, consider making a DIY dry shampoo. The Wellness Mama has three dry shampoo recipes: One is for dark hair, the other for light, and the other for either color of hair. All are awesome.

2. For when your hair is tangled after a long night’s rest

I don’t know about you, but I sleep HARD. So, when I wake up my hair looks like a bird’s nest. This DIY hair detangler will get those yucky knots out in a snap. (And it only has three store-bought ingredients: Aloe Vera gel, vegetable glycerin and essential oil.)

3. Hair masks for when your hair needs a little something

Whether your hair is oily, dry, or dull, there’s a DIY hair mask for you and your locks. All of the recipes on Woman’s Day‘s site can be made with ingredients that are probably in you kitchen.

The one I want to try? The dull hair recipe. It only calls for a half cup of yogurt. Cover damp hair with yogurt for 20 minutes. Wash with warm water, then cool water, then shampoo normally! All the DIY hair products in this piece look simple and awesome, though.

4. For when you need style

A bit of molasses warmed by the friction of your hands can work as a killer pomade. Just a dab can keep flyaways down.

5. For when your hair needs a bit of a bounce

After you shampoo and condition your hair, just pour a room temperature beer over your head. Leave the beer in your hair for a few minutes and lightly rinse the brew out.

6. For those dry days

If your hair totally lacks moisture, try one of these five DIY treatments. Everything from yogurt to honey can keep your hair smooth.

7. When you want to give your locks the special treatment

Any of these eight recipes can be whipped up in a few minutes, and they all will leave your hair shiny and supple. (Seriously – one recipe only calls for whisked avocado and coconut milk – that’s it!)
