We all know that riding a bike is a green and healthy way to get from Point A to Point B. Now, imagine pedaling in between eating, drinking (within limits, natch), or checking out art installations in one of North America’s coolest cities. If the idea of sightseeing aboard a cruiser or commuter up your alley, check out these innovative bike tours.

Holoholo Bicycles, Honolulu While in Honolulu in September, I was shocked to learn that this laid-back city recently ranked number one for the nation’s worst traffic. Fortunately, you don’t need a car to discover the best parts of Honolulu (and there are many), but the city doesn’t have a dominant bike culture of the kind you find in the Pacific Northwest, Brooklyn, or the Bay Area. Fortunately, a new company is putting bike tours on the local radar.

Brandon Reid and Nicole Maryott launched Holoholo Bicycles out of a historic, exposed brick space adjoining their Chinatown restaurant, Manifest, in July. The charming young Honolulu-born and –raised couple are part of a progressive new breed of local entrepreneur who are inspired by the green urban development and tourism found in pockets throughout the Mainland.

Explains Maryott, “Our mission is to liberate the modern traveler from environmentally unfriendly tourism in Hawaii. We see bike tours as a carbon-free way to experience the location, culture, and people of Honolulu. We also believe that given the choice, visitors want to be healthier, more responsible, and more informed about this paradise that is too often commercialized beyond recognition.”

Despite having lived in Hawaii, I’d never taken an organized tour of Honolulu. The thought of being crammed aboard a double-decker bus heaving with tourists makes me shudder, and left to my own devices, I usually opt for one of the outer beaches over the (very excellent) Bishop Museum.

This is one reason Holoholo’s bike tours are ingenious. Combining sight-seeing (on shiny Trek Allant 7 commuters; max group size is five) with outdoor activity is an appealing way to turn visitors on Honolulu’s lesser-known historic and cultural treasures. The company focuses on three different itineraries: Chinatown Modern, Downtown, and Historic Honolulu.

I opted for the latter, which includes a diversified two-hour exploration of the spots like the burgeoning Kaka’ako Waterfront and Development District (think industrial ‘hood turned funky restaurants, live/work spaces, shops, and studios, with a dynamic street-art backdrop); Aloha Tower; Hawaiian Mission Houses; Hawaii State Capitol; the Queen Lili’okalani statue; ‘Iolani Palace, and Chinatown.

Reid plays tour guide to small groups, talking about the cultural and historical significance at each stop, and shares anecdotes. For those who are leery of city riding (that would include me), not to worry. Safety is paramount to Holoholo’s philosophy, but you don’t feel like you’re on training wheels. Rather, I found myself discovering sides of the city I’d never explored in-depth (with the exception of Honolulu’s Chinatown, which I love for its charmingly decrepit buildings, fascinating history, excellent restaurants, and colorful residents: it’s definitely not a tourist-trap).

Getting an inside peek at Honolulu (think: views of Diamond Head and Waikiki while surrounded by locals fishing for dinner; kids using a concrete desalination plant basin as a swimming hole; frail Chinese men playing a fierce game of cards on a sidewalk) is all too rare. Here’s to Holoholo.

Pedal Bike Tours, Portland, OR

It’s tough to choose between a tour of PDX’s visionary food cart pods or its breweries, but this is the Pacific Northwest, after all. With 40 microbreweries and brewpubs within city limits, it just makes sense to quench your thirst with a taste of iconic PDX brews from spots like Deschutes, McMenamin’s, and Rogue. The three-hour tour includes a cruise past hometown hero Stumptown Coffee, before concluding, time-permitting, with a pint at a tap room.

Cycle City Tours, Vancouver

In addition to pedals around the city’s stunning Stanley Park (an urban oasis) and downtown, there’s now an option for fans of public art. The Art Wheelers Tour launched in June, and includes a tour of Vancouver’s art installations, architecture, and small, community-driven works. Says founder and “chief pedaler” Josh Bloomfield, “We found that much like our food tour, public art is an interesting topic to discover the city’s history, culture, and neighborhoods. Each piece that we talk about relates with a point about its broader context in Vancouver’s landscape.” Art Wheelers tours will resume in June, 2014.

What would New Orleans be without its food? Still an incredible city, but seriously? No trip is complete without a dive into NOLA’s historic, culturally-diverse, dining scene. The Culinary Bike Tour takes small groups on an in-depth, by-neighborhood exploration that features tastings of everything from gumbo and Po’ boys to boudin and crawfish boil at landmarks like Bayona, Irene’s, and Galatoire’s. Don’t expect the physical exertion to match the glut of pork products and roux, but that’s besides the point. Being the metropolitan that it is, London is no stranger to healthy food and lifestyle options. But because the city used to be called “the Big Smoke” because of its smog, I was surprised to find that it comfortably caters to a plant-based diet and active lifestyle.

Roaming along the aisles of its popular grocery stores, such as Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Whole Foods, you’ll come across a larger variety of raw and vegan food specialty items than you would even in New York City. And if you enjoy a good outdoor workout, have no fear, because London’s parks are highly accessible for the avid runner or walker. In the event the city’s healthy charms don’t stop you in your tracks first, here are some standout eateries that will orient you.

The UK may be known for its fish and chips, puddings, and roasted meat, but in recent years, eateries with vegetarian, vegan, and raw food options have emerged and subsequently gained popularity. The following cafes and restaurants will make your transition to London a healthier and happier experience.

1. Since 1988, Mildreds has been serving a vegetarian menu in its quaint location on Lexington Street in West London. The menu will seduce even the most skeptical of carnivores. From its pumpkin and ricotta ravioli with chestnut mushroom cream and white wine sauce to its sun-blushed tomato, mozzarella, and basil risotto cake, you’ll be drooling far before the food arrives to the table.

2. The world-wide vegetarian chain, Govinda, has a location in London’s Soho neighborhood. Govinda is a restaurant that hails the “karma-free diet” and provides a no-frills environment that promotes tranquility, health, and balance. Govinda does not use meat, fish, or eggs in any of its dishes and also shuns onions, garlic, and mushrooms. Take a bite into its egg-free quiche, veggie burger, and spinach rolls for a wholesome and rounded meal.

3. It would be a mistake to overlook the South Asian influence on local cuisine. It seems like an Indian restaurant can be found every few blocks and, considering lots of Indian food is strictly vegetarian, it’d be helpful to filter through the many restaurants and pick the right place. One dependable option is Woodlands, which has locations in Piccadilly, Hampstead, and Marylebone Lane. The interior of the restaurants is decorated with bright, fresh colors, the dishes are elaborately plated, and the atmosphere is high-end but casual. The restaurants also provide a vegan menu.

4. Vitao, located in Soho, has an international vegan menu that changes weekly and features seasonal produce. With its lentil dhal, kale and pomegranate salad with grape dressing, Thai green curry, homemade kimchee, and paella, it’s clear that a meal at Vitao is a trip around the world.

5. For a quick lunch or take-out vegan fare, check out Beatroot on Berwick Street in Soho. The small eatery displays ten internationally-inspired and ready-to-eat hot dishes, most of which are vegan. Dip into the moussaka or cut into the soy-based sausage for a hearty vegan experience. Beatroot also offers homemade vegan sweets – nut and dried fruit-based power balls and a variety of muffins – for a post-munch delight. If you in the mood for something lighter, ask for a fresh juice or smoothie.

6. For those with even stricter food preferences, the raw food options in London are growing. Without question, the premier raw restaurant is Saf, which means “pure” in Turkish. The menu features items that have not been heated above 48 degrees Celsius (118 Fahrenheit), preserving optimum flavor and nutrition. The restaurants location may throw you off, as it’s situated in the top floor of the Whole Foods adjacent to the High Street Kensington station, but its cuisine rises to the occasion and has truly set the precedent for London’s raw food scene. Head to Saf for a unique culinary experience and indulge in a Mexican raw tostada or lasagna verde without craving anything else. To get a sample of it all, order the raw tasting board, which includes maki rolls, cashew cheese dolmades, bánh tráng rolls, and nachos with guacamole, tomato salsa and sour cream.

7. The Wild Food Café in Convent Garden is an independent eatery that aims to create “heart-opening” food. The environment is light and friendly, with all the food prepared in an open kitchen. While not all menu items are raw or vegan, the menu makes it clear what dish falls under what category. All ingredients are also sourced thoughtfully from trusted farmers and producers. This summer, Wild Food Café will introduce wines from organic and bio-dynamic producers. The café offers an abundant wild salad with foraged greens, wild rocket, Romano pepper, carrot, zucchini, pomegranate seeds, and a mustard and dill emulsion, which is entirely raw and best enjoyed with the café’s sourdough bread. It also serves living pizza, falafel, and an olive and shiitake burger that is best finished off with a raw chocolate and almond mousse.

8. Dragonfly Wholefoods, which hosts a daily buffet, is a whole food shop turned vegetarian café with vegan and raw options.

9. InSpiral Lounge is a raw and vegan hot spot run by the Ekopia Poject collective that hosts festive events.

10. The Bonnington Café is a community vegan and vegetarian restaurant that hosts a feast every second, fourth, and fifth Sunday of the month. Bonnington Café’s chef is the mastermind behind the raw food delivery service Raw Fairies.

Go beyond falafel and hummus, indulge in the bustling conscious culture of Tel Aviv.

Before arriving to Tel Aviv, all my research concerning eating vegan or vegetarian pointed to one conclusion: falafel and hummus. Tel Aviv isn’t particularly known for its cuisine and has adopted its culinary creations from the Mediterranean coast and Arab neighbors. I figured if what I ordered wasn’t something involving fried chickpeas or tahini then the only other option would be lamb. When I arrived, however, I was impressed to see that there indeed existed a growing buzz for plant-based eating and an enthusiastic culture to support it. Yes, there was a lot of falafel and hummus involved, mostly because Israelis do a fantastic job at them, but there were also so many other opportunities to enjoy the local culture in a sustainable and healthy way.

The star of Tel Aviv’s health food joints is decidedly the Taste of Life, located on Ben Zehuda Street. Since 1984, the restaurant has gone beyond kosher laws and has successfully worked under a vegan, organic and raw banner. Dishes are made in-house and include tofu quiches, mock-meat, veggie burgers, tofu teriyaki, Schwarma, stir fry, grains, vegetable casseroles, soy ice-cream as well as a selection of salads and juices. The restaurant also hosts cooking classes and offers catering services.

Start the day out with a hearty Israeli breakfast that will satisfy both the vegan and non-vegan palette. Orna & Ella is a well-established fixture that has become a symbol of Tel Aviv and Shenkin Street. Starting off as a coffee shop 14 years ago, today Orna & Ella feeds diners on a balcony in the back and three small separate rooms and is famous for its yam patties, which are served with a creamy chives dip. In addition to its meat pie and chicken liver dishes, there are salads, homemade pastas and morning pastries. Get the best of both worlds and indulge in a truly Tel Aviv experience at this humble local mainstay.

On Yehuda Halevi Street you’ll find a health enthusiast’s true oasis. Aba Gil is a vegan, organic, low-fat, gluten and soy-free restaurant. The menu is stocked with typical dishes characteristic to the city’s tastes, such as hummus and falafel, in addition to others with stand-outs such as sweet potato, beans, quinoa, brown rice, vegetables, sprouts, and beets.

If you are in the mood for a burger, but want to keep things light, go to Buddha Burgers on Ibn Gavirol for a vegan, and Israeli, take on an American classic. The restaurant preps all the burgers itself and also serves vegan milkshakes to complete the experience. In a show of its good nature, Buddha Burgers offers animal rights activists a special discount.

Venture to southern Tel Aviv for a Southeast Asian experience. Indian restaurant 24 Rupee is nestled between unlikely neighbors – warehouses and motorbike shops – but is itself a charming, authentic Indian food restaurant with colorful walls and a cozy atmosphere that is introduced at first step, when patrons are asked to remove their shoes. Indian music complements the meal and during the summer, the rooftop is open for diners to enjoy their food in fresh air. As another reprieve from Israeli cuisine, try your hand at chopstick skills at Onami on HaArba. While the restaurant is not exclusively vegan or vegetarian, like any Japanese sushi restaurant, there are plenty of vegan options, such as stir-fried tofu and green vegetables. Let the server know your vegetarian or vegan preferences before ordering-

If moving to Tel Aviv or planning on a longer visit, it may interest you to join the Bar-Kayma, a cooperative vegan restaurant and bar that doubles as a community center. Owned by its customers and employees, Bar-Kayma offers members wholesale prices on its products and services, allows members to take part in all community decisions, provides lectures, performances and movies every evening, and serves fresh vegan food. It costs 1,000 Shekels, or just under $275, to join. For non-members, the cooperative is still open and the food and drinks are still competitively low.

At Aqua Wellness in the coastal Nicaraguan jungle, the focus is on healthy living: organic food, yoga, meditation – and surfing.

The safest country in Central America, Nicaragua is now starting to challenge neighbouring Costa Rica as the region’s leading ecotourism destination.

An excellent example of this new trend is Aqua Wellness, a luxury ecoresort in an off-the-beaten-path setting: the jungle which fringes the Pacific Coast. This place has serious eco credentials: the low-impact treetop villas, built from sustainably-grown hardwoods by Nicaraguan craftsmen, are integrated within the existing forest; in fact, the resort was carefully designed so that minimal trees had to be removed.

The resort offers a number of retreats and courses themed around yoga, meditation, raw food – and surfing. The yoga pavilion is stunningly located above the forest canopy with views to the sea.

Rooms are stylish, either treetop or beachfront villas (one, two or three-bedroom), with sea or rainforest views, based around wood and decorated in soothing colors. Suites have their own kitchens, some with decks and plunge pools; treehouses have outdoor Balinese showers.

The restaurant serves organic food – some home-grown on their own farm, the rest from the surrounding area (ceviche, fresh fruit, fish and beef curries), and they bake all their own bread. The yoga teacher, Grace, also gives raw vegan and chocolate-making classes. In the spa you can get a papaya and pineapple body polish or a coconut, honey and yogurt exfoliation.

The hotel has set up a foundation to help the local community (most employees are Nicaraguan) with education, transport and other facilities, and also offers volunteer programmes on sustainable development projects, from monitoring native species such as birds, sea turtles and howler monkeys, to organizing the organic farm.

Those wanting to experience the latest adrenalin sport will not want to miss climbing a volcano and then sandboarding back down its slopes. (That’s like snowboarding, except on sand.)

Rates from $155; surf and yoga retreats from $1700 (seven nights including all meals, two yoga practices a day, a class on Ayurvedic nutrition, surfing classes, and a sunset jungle hike; surfboard hire not included).
