1. Rose lipstick

Nope, it’s not May. Rose lipstick is all the rage this fall season. The Huffington Post recently rounded up some photos of a handful of celebrities donning this cute look.

2. Pastel lipstick

If you’re a tad more adventurous and still want to rock lighter, delicate hues on your lips, grab a few pastel lipsticks. Wearing a nice pastel violet may sound like an odd office look, but when it’s paired with simple eye makeup and a clean bun, the shade looks quite grownup.

Thank goodness for this news. This is one of my favorite fall beauty trends. I’ve been cursed, or blessed, with bushy brows since birth. According to Glamour, brushed-up brows can make eyebrows appear fuller, messier and generally, hotter.

4. Shimmery undereye

Take some of your favorite shimmery eye shadow, or an eye pencil, and give your undereye a little glow. Colors, such as gunmetal and gold, are great choices.

5. Pastel nail polish or berry nail polish

This Elle post is filled with beautiful nail polishes that come and various hues, such as blue orchid and rose pink. If you don’t dig the lighter side, worry not. The post also has some amazing deep colored polishes, too.

6. Glittery green eyes and smoky brown eyes

A subtle green on your top lid will keep you looking fresh day or night. And if you want to look a bit more traditional, try a daytime smoky brown look that’s described as “muted but sultry.”

7. Red lips and jewel-toned eyes

If you don’t want to throw away your deep red lipstick, you’re in luck. Slather on your favorite red and pair with a sapphire or emerald eye. This art deco look is perfect for a night out.

I am not a makeup artist. Are you? If so, would you care to live in my handbag? Because I really need to you to apply my makeup in the most kick ass way and then be on hand for touch ups. Not appealing? Well, excuse me, makeup artist who doesn’t want to live in my handbag. Because I found something that does the trick and without feasting off the crackers I’ve stolen from last night’s restaurant.

Who is the eager interloper ready to replace my imaginary, petite makeup artist friend? It’s Tarte’s Lock & Roll 12-Hour Eyeshadow ($17). New for summer, this gadgety eyeshadow makes application easy for the most basic makeup artists – like me! It is formulated without parabens, mineral oil, petrolatum, phthalates, SLS, synthetic fragrances or dyes. It comes in recyclable packaging printed with soy inks, and it is cruelty free.

Called a “creaseless cream and powder shadow duo,” this eyeshadow is a little wand with a brush cream applicator on one end and a powder shadow roller on the other. As Tarte describes it, “the matching loose shadow in a roller ball applicator easily glides over cream shadow to lock color in and add luminosity so color lasts all day.” It is also waterproof and crease proof.

And yes, it works. How do I know this? I have the skills of a trained monkey when it comes to eyeshadow application, and I managed to apply it without major issue. The cream side is a little tricky – make sure you “drain” the brush as you would before applying nail polish. I didn’t on the first round and ended up looking like the climatic end of Rocky – pre-Sylvester Stallone plastic surgery makeover.

But the roll-on side works like a charm. I found the roll-on end really easy to apply. I was also able to get a clean line that went straight into “favorite tool for smoky eye” territory. The color schemes for this line are shimmery bronzes, pinks, blues and greens, so you should be able to find something for your color palette.

I am not Ultimate Eye Shadow Girl.

You know who I’m talking about – the girl who applies awesome eye shadow with such ease and flair that she must be a secret- agent-supermodel who can disarm a bomb from memory and never, ever trip in her high heels. She always has artfully applied eye shadow, and she always looks amazing and not the least bit clownish in it.

I have always wanted to be Ultimate Eye Shadow Girl. And it looks like this might be the year it actually happens.

This season, the trends in eye shadow are all about subtle, smoky eyes combined with neutral lips. (Or bright, berry lips combined with a neutral eye.) Forest colors are big, including lots of dark green, browns, plums, mauves and berries. And it is all about blending dark and light contrasts, or layering sheers over muted darks.

Here’s how to ace the eyes:

Start with the lighter color over brow. Blend in darker colors, but keep it below the crease. You can even add texture with a metallic blend or bright champagne color. You can also blend browns with a shimmery green or blue, which can reflect when the light hits it. Don’t forget to choose lighter eyeliner to enhance the smoky eye look.

And most importantly, what organic products to use? I sampled some of the top-rated eco-friendly eye shadows out there.
