Go with lighter-weight and sheer fabrics. “A floaty skirt of gauze or silk ‘lightens up’ the impact of inky black and doesn’t look as heavy,” says fashion expert Dianne M. Daniels. “Remember to keep the fabric opaque enough that you don’t sacrifice your modesty, but not so heavy that there’s no chance of a breeze wafting by and keeping you cool.”

2. Jackets aren’t out of the question

If your closet’s overflowing with items you never wear, here’s the 411 on creating the capsule wardrobe of your dreams.

When I open my overstuffed closet to try and find something to wear, it makes me feel like a country song. Why does fashion have to be so complicated? Oh, wait: It doesn’t! There’s this minimal-yet-stylish concept called a capsule wardrobe that’s making a splash, and it takes all the muss and fuss out of getting dressed in the morning. The secret? Cutting the crap of course.

Here’s all you need to know about capsule wardrobes—and how to create a killer one of your very own:

1. What is this capsule wardrobe you speak of?

A capsule wardrobe is essentially a streamlined collection of garments based on your own personal style—usually consisting of anywhere from 10 to 37 items, depending on how daring you are. These pieces are timeless, versatile, built to last, and some can be transitioned from season to season. They can be easily mixed and matched to create oodles of outfit choices for your fine self.

2. What are the benefits of a capsule wardrobe?

Honing in on your personal style will save you time, money and energy that you can put toward the things that really matter to you (and I’m assuming spending half the day scowling in front of the mirror isn’t one of them). Plus, you’ll never hear yourself whine about having nothing to wear ever again. Like, ever.

3. What are the steps involved in creating a capsule wardrobe?

STEP ONE:
Pick a number, any number: Based on your lifestyle, estimate the magic number of pieces you’ll need for your capsule wardrobe and try to stick within that range. Once you have your pieces pared down, this will become the (rough) number you carry with you from season to season.

Items to include in your capsule collection: Tops, bottoms, shoes, dresses and outerwear. Don’t include things like workout clothes, accessories, socks and undies, pyjamas, or anything that’s super duper formal.

STEP TWO:
Take everything out of your closet (and I mean everything). Lay out all your pieces so you can clearly see everything you own.

STEP THREE:
Organize your pieces into four piles: Yes, No, Maybe, Seasonal.

Yes items are the items you’re madly in love with. They’re perfect for your bod and your lifestyle. You feel like Beyoncé wearing them. On a scale of one to 10, they’re a 75. These items go back in your closet pronto.

No items get donated, swapped, given to a friend or sold to fund the blanks you may need to fill in your capsule wardrobe.

Maybe items are the ones that don’t feel quite right yet you’re afraid to get rid of them. Simply set these aside or store them for later (but do not put them back in your closet). Give yourself a deadline—for example, if you don’t wear or even look at your maybe pile by the end of the season, you’ll sell or donate them.

Seasonal items are also items you love, but don’t fit the season you’re currently creating a capsule wardrobe for. Store these items until the season they’re meant for, such as winter coats and sweaters.

STEP FOUR:
Live with your current capsule wardrobe for a little while to get a sense of what might be missing from it, then shop for those pieces.

STEP FIVE:
Allow your capsule wardrobe to evolve. As you go along, tweak it as you see fit until it’s just right. (In other words, by the time you’re done, make sure every item on a scale of one to 10 is a 75.)

4. How do I update my capsule wardrobe at the end of the season?

Transfer any items that can be used the following season too, and take any pieces out of storage you’ve saved for the upcoming season. Again, wear your updated capsule wardrobe for a while and see if there are any blanks that need to be filled, or duds you need to swap out with something different.

You’ll do this for every season until you have a capsule wardrobe for each one. And when a season comes back around, for every new item you want to add, get rid of one.

The trick to the entire process is to go with your gut. There are so many rules attached to what women “should” and “shouldn’t” have in their closets that we’ve lost sight of our own personal style. This process will help you create your own rules—and look amazing to boot.

Fall is the best worst season ever, isn’t it? It’s beautiful, it’s soothing, it’s bold – but when it comes to the weather, it really needs to make up its mind already. I mean, if you want to be warm, then great – our summer duds can last just a teensy bit longer. If you want to be cold, we can deal with that too – we are women, after all. But as it stands, I have to take my sweater on and off so many times in a day my biceps are starting to look like Mr. Clean’s. Throw us a bone already, will you?

Since we already know that’s never going to happen (pffft!), we’re going to have to take matters into our own hands. By learning how to layer clothes, we won’t have to spend the fall feeling like menopause has come 20 years too soon.

Here are 9 fashion hacks on how to layer clothes (you know, minus all the bulk):

1. Play with proportions

If you want a balanced layered look, the key is mixing proportions. For example, short with long or fitted with loose: A short sweater layered over a long tank, or a fitted tank layered under a chunky knit sweater. Really, the combinations are endless. Think in opposites, and you’ll find your layered looks will come together quickly.

2. Simplify your color palette and focus on texture instead

Layering can be overwhelming, especially when trying to mix colors and prints. Since fall tends to be more about soothing neutrals, try layering different textures instead. It’ll help take the pressure off while giving your look a cozy, yet bold feel.

3. Start with a dress

How to layer clothes depends on the weather in your area, but no matter where you live you really can’t go wrong with thin layers. For example, wearing a dress with pants underneath is kind of a big deal this season. Sweater dresses with tights are also a fun staple to accessorize, and are great for work and play.

4. Punch your neutrals (you know, with color)

I’m a big fan of keeping my fall clothes simple in color, then BAM – adding a bold accessory, like a yellow handbag or red shoes. This especially comes in handy when you’ve been procrastinating on your laundry, since everything always goes together no matter the season. Give simple outfits a touch of the unexpected, and you’ll never run out of things to wear.

5. Stock up on basics

Basic tees, cardigans, button-up shirts and tights tend to be the glue that hold your layered outfit together. They’re super easy to toss on underneath your textured or patterned pieces.

6. Knits? Bring. It. On.

Cardigans, sweaters and vests are your BFFs in the layering department. If you’re wearing a generally basic outfit, you can layer on funky patterns and bold textures with ease. There’s nothing better than looking like it took you forever to get ready in the morning, when really it only took 10 minutes. (Hey, a girl can dream, can’t she?)

The world of fashion is amazing, but can be very overwhelming – especially when fashion mishaps happen, like water stains on your fave boots or your attempt at layering making you look like Joey Tribbiani (“Could I be wearing any more clothes?”). To make your life easier, we’ve compiled a list of fashion tips and tricks to make you feel more fashionable – and less frazzled.

Here are 51 fashion tips that will leave you armed and fabulous:

1. Want longer-looking legs? Wear shoes with a pointed tip.

2. To prevent runs in your tights, spray them with hairspray.

3. Few things are worse than dropping an earring back. Put a stocking over your vacuum cleaner’s hose to find it in a snap.

4. Dry hand-washed clothing using a salad spinner.

5. Because jeans always shrink in length when they’re washed, make sure you wash them twice before getting them hemmed.

6. To look uber-chic while still showing some skin, wear shorts or a miniskirt and cover up on top. If you’re wearing a skimpy top, opt for full coverage on the bottom.

7. Naturally waterproof your canvas shoes with beeswax: Simply rub them with it and set using a blow-dryer.

8. Remove smells from vintage clothing by spritzing them with a mix of one part vodka and two parts water.

9. Choose necklaces based on the necklines you wear most often:

10. To remove those pesky yellow sweat stains from your white shirts, spray the affected areas with lemon juice before putting them in the washing machine.

19. Drying your hair with a t-shirt instead of a towel is much gentler on your hair: It helps prevent hair shaft damage and potential frizziness.

20. Master the art of making any jeans look like skinny jeans:

21. Make your next closet detox a breeze: To see which clothes you never wear, turn all your hangers in the same direction. As you bust out clothes to wear, hang them back up with the hanger facing the other way. Afterward, get rid of the clothes that are still hanging the original way.

22. Break in your new kicks by putting them on with socks and blasting your feet with your hairdryer on the hot setting.

23. V-neck tops make your torso look longer.

24. To maintain the wash of your jeans, add 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar to the final rinse cycle during your next wash.

Fact: Plaid is the best. It can be tomboy. It can be feminine. It can be downright adorable. It’s also perfect for layering – and with fall just around the corner, plaid will keep you warm and stylish. A plaid down vest plus a fitted plaid boyfriend shirt equals a stylish lumberjack.

6. Pair with grown-up accessories

Wear your ’90s fashion inspired prints and pair them with grown-up accessories. For example, match your top, shoes or clutch to one of the colors in your print. Or, if your office is into the whole casual Friday thing, wear a fun print with a serious one as if to say, “I’m professional, but I also know how to party.” (And when it comes to adding a scrunchie into the mix, proceed with caution.)

7. Play with proportion

Choose a type of print for your ’90s fashion statement – for example, stripes – and play with proportions. Pair a thick-striped top with a thin-striped pant, or big plaid and small plaid. The sky’s the limit! Ironically, the more your prints don’t match, the more they do.

8. Mix loud and neutral

If you’re a print-mixing newbie or want to wear the trend to an otherwise conservative event, try mixing a metallic or neon print with a simple neutral. Give one print the starring role and the other a nod for best supporting print.

9. Wear with confidence

When it comes to this ’90s fashion trend, there really are no rules, only suggestions. As long as you strut around confidently in your uber-unique ensemble (a la the Fresh Prince) you’ll look fabulous. The worst thing you can do is take the plunge and wear a bold, loud, wonderfully mismatched outfit – and then not leave the house. Have fun, and enjoy your second childhood with pride.

How to wear pink clothing without looking like you’re on your way to a ballet recital… that you’re starring in.

When it comes to pink clothing, I’m a total hypocrite. I constantly go on about how much I love the color, yet you won’t find one stitch of pink clothing in my wardrobe. I’ve always attributed the color pink to being girly, vibrant and outgoing… all things I’m not, so it goes without saying I’m a tad concerned about taking the plunge. It’d basically be like putting Elle Woods’ clothing on Darlene from “Roseanne.”

That being said, I’ve decided to start small and work my way up: Pink jewelry, pink hair accessories, pink office supplies – I’m almost ready to buy pink socks. Almost. Where are you on the spectrum? If you’d like to think pink but have no idea where to start, here are 9 grown-up ways to wear pink clothing:

1. Mix with menswear
No matter how frilly the pink clothing you choose, you can easily edge it up by accenting with menswear, such as a fitted blazer or tailored pant. If you’re in the mood to go bold, make a sophisticated statement with pink menswear (an oddly impressive combination).

2. It’s all in the shade
Choose your shade of pink based on the outing: For the office, go for a more muted shade (such as blush or peach), and leave anything bubblegum-esque for your night out with the girls. If you want to make a bold statement but don’t want to look too Madonna-circa-1980s, take a bright coral or magenta for a spin.

3. Add some leather
As they say on “Project Runway”, the strength of leather combined with the daintiness of pink will give your outfit a “juxtaposition between hard and soft.” For example, a leather jacket over a pink minidress takes away the Zooey Deschanel factor that only Zooey Deschanel can get away with. Or depending on where you work, a leather pencil skirt with a pink blouse (me-ow!).

4. Try it with a print
If you’re worried wearing pink clothing is going to make you look juvenile, then use the color to bring some character to a “serious” or structured print. The print will make the pink aspect of your outfit look more adult, while the pink will add whimsy to what could otherwise end up being an intimidating outfit.

5. Choose the right cut
Especially when opting for a crazy-bold piece of pink clothing (fuscia, anyone?), make sure it’s well-tailored. No matter how bright the color, when the piece is fitted and flatters your body, it reads stylish and polished.

6. Wear classic silhouettes
Infuse pink throughout your common staples, such as your casual tanks and tees – swap some of those neutrals with the shades of pink you love most. The pop of color will be a fun change of pace from your usual whites, blacks and greys. (Yawn, am I right?)

7. Go big or go home
Let’s face it: There are days when you just want to go full-on princess! I say, if the hints of pink aren’t cutting it for you, then choose an occasion where you can take pink clothing for a spin the way you’ve always wanted to. You might find there’s a whole new you underneath all of those muted colors!

8. Wear a pink coat
If you can’t quite commit to pink clothing (yet), why not try a pink coat? It’s a great way to test the waters to see if you can make pink work. If you’re not feeling it, you can simply take off your coat and go back to your regularly scheduled programming. Let’s face it though: You’ll rock the pink coat and then wonder what all the fuss was about.

9. Use pink as an accent
If you’re like me and need some time to work your way up to pink clothing, start with pink accessories: A clutch or purse, a cute pair of pumps, even a keychain if you’re really desperate. It’s a great way to start adding the color to your wardrobe without breaking the bank.

Do you know the best jeans for your bod – or just think you do?

I’ve never actually stopped to think about what makes a great pair of jeans. When I go shopping, I tend to focus on my waist size and leg length – both of which are ballpark figures – and once I hit the change room with what I believe to be the best jeans, I freeze… since, you know, I have no idea what it even means.

Have you been wearing the best jeans for your body type? To help you find out, we caught up with Moniqua Plante, top LA fit model, who’s worked with such ah-mazing clients as True Religion, Lucky Brand Jeans, Forever 21 and Bebe Studio. (There are even Tukatech & Alva mannequins of her bod!)

Here’s what you need to keep in mind during your hunt for the best jeans:

1. Enjoy experimenting
“The biggest piece of advice I can give is don’t be afraid of trying on a few different sizes,” says Plante. “We’re socialized to believe that size is everything. Meanwhile, no one’s looking at the label inside your jeans, they’re looking at your cute butt on the outside.” Plus, when jeans are mass-produced, sizing will always vary slightly, so make sure to bring your go-to size, one size up and one size down to the change room.

2. Know what to look for
“When you try on jeans, they should feel a little tight, but not like sausage casing,” says Plante. “Denim will grow as you wear it. I always do a few squats and knee bends in the dressing room to get a feel for how the denim moves and to see how quickly it stretches out.”

Once you’re checking yourself out in the mirror, here are three important areas to pay attention to:

• If the mid-thigh area is too tight (the area between your upper thigh and knee on the back of your leg), you’ll end up with extra fabric above the back knee and serious creases on your back thigh. Plante calls this extra fabric fold behind the knee “knee buckets.”
• If you have a muscular calf area, the stretchier the jean, the better. You don’t want your calves to seem larger, so try a slight boot cut to avoid emphasizing this area. This will help to balance out your figure.
• Are they bootylicious enough? Use the back pockets as your guide: You want to make sure they’re not too big and not too small. If you’ve got a big booty, small pockets will make it look bigger. If it’s small a larger pocket will help fill you out. If your rear’s flatter, look for pockets with a flap or embellishment of some sort to accentuate all you have to offer.

3. Know your body type
“There are a number of body types,” says Plante, “But you probably fall under one of the main five.” Here are her recommendations for each:

Curvy
Balanced upper + lower body with a slim waist.

“You want to accentuate your awesome curves without making yourself look fuller than you are,” says Plante. Skinny jeans are ah-mazing for this body shape. If you’re not a fan of skinny jeans, try a pair of boot-cut or flared jeans with a low- to mid-rise waist to even out your curvy hips and booty. Wider-legged styles will also look fabulous on you. Go for denim with a bit of stretch for extra comfiness.

Straight
Athletic build, straight up and down without a defined waist.

“Lower-rise jeans will create the illusion of a defined wasiteline,” says Plante. The best jeans for this figure are bootcut or slightly flared. Make sure they’re relaxed around the calves and ankles, but fitted around your hips and booty. Steer clear of higher-wasted styles, as they will add too much width to your lower body.

Triangular
Wider shoulders/larger boobs with a slim booty and thighs.

A wider leg will help balance out your chest so you don’t appear top-heavy. “A lighter wash denim will also draw the eye downward and away from your chest,” says Plante. “Go for low-rise, boot-cut or wide leg jeans to achieve the effect.”

Apple
Slim shoulders + hips, wider midsection.

Low-rise jeans will emphasize your fuller middle and give you a muffin top (dun dun dunnn!). “I recommend mid-rise jeans with a boot-cut or slightly flared silhouette,” says Plante. A straight leg style will show off your lean legs, and if you love skinny jeans, go for it! Just make sure you choose a flattering, flowy top that helps hide the tummy.

Pear
Wider hips + thighs with narrow shoulders + bust.

“The most important thing is to look for a style that will elongate your legs,” says Plante. “I caution against skinny jeans because they’ll emphasize your fuller lower regions, as well as super high-waisted jeans, which will make your legs look shorter.” Give mid-rise, straight leg or bootcut styles a try – with a dark wash that will flatter your shape.
