Already thinking about your fall style? Of course you are.

While there’s still plenty of summer left to enjoy, many of us are getting a head start on how we’re going to tackle the whole fall style thing—you know, without falling victim to every new trend in sight or losing our sense of individuality in some fast fashion black hole.

Hey, fashion faux pas happen to the best of us, but why not use each new season to regroup and learn from our mistakes? Yep, that means ditching your what-the-eff-was-I-thinking duds and thoughtfully building the wardrobe of your dreams. And while you’re at it, use these fall style resolutions to make sure you don’t come home with clothes you might kinda sorta regret later:

1. Dress to impress… yourself

I know you hear this all the time, but don’t buy clothes you think you “should” buy—buy the clothes you’re drawn to, that excite you, and that make you happy. Period. Fashion trends will come and go, but a timeless capsule collection of clothes you’ll love forever is… well, forever.

2. Choose your trends thoughtfully

Not every trend suits every body type or personality, but if there is a fall style trend that leaves you drooling, splurge wisely. Once the trend is over, will you still love the item? Or will you be able to morph it into something else/wear it differently once it’s old news? The more versatile the trend, the less wasted closet space in your future.

3. Buy local

If you always shop at the same stores, maybe it’s time to see other boutiques. You’ll never know the unique, one-of-a-kind pieces you’ll find if you don’t venture out of your comfort zone.

4. Try something new

Do you always buy the same styles and colors? If your wardrobe’s feeling a little stale, make a pact that you’ll buy something daring to amp up your fall style. Whether it’s a new style of jacket or a bold-colored top, go big or go home.

5. Find your dream handbag

You know, the unicorn handbag: The one you can wear every day, with every outfit, that suits every occasion. It may have been easier to find your husband than it will be your soulpurse, but like the hubs, it’ll be worth the wait.

6. Plan for an investment piece

We’ve all got that big-ticket item on our wish list that we say we’ll splurge on “one day”—that gorgeous jacket, those sky-high boots, or that uber-sparkly bracelet… only “one day” never seems to show up. The fact is there’ll always be a more responsible way for you to spend your money, but why work hard if you’re not going to allow yourself a perk every now and then?

7. Upgrade your undies

While nobody can tell that your granny panties are totally riding up on you (like, right now), isn’t it about time you trade those stretched-out, worn-out undies in for some comfier digs?

8. Replenish your basics

They might not be the most fascinating part of your wardrobe, but those simple tanks, plain tees and basic jeans really do come in handy. Do an inventory and replace the basics you’ve worn to pieces, so you’re armed and ready for the new season.

What fall style resolutions will you be making?

Since you can only stand a top knot for so long, chic things up with these easy DIY hair accessories.

We might be having fun in the sun, but our hair sure isn’t. Between the frizz, bleached-out color, and tangles, our tresses look and feel… well, exhausted. And you can only throw it up in a top knot or sport beach waves so many times before needing to kick things up several notches.

To get a grip on that tousled ‘do of yours, here are 9 fun and easy DIY hair accessories you’ll love making as much as you’ll love wearing:

Wearing all black in the summer: It’s no longer just for hostesses.

As much as we lurv our bold colors and prints that have summer written all over them, sometimes a girl needs to dip into the classics. And while wearing all black in the summer sounds totally batshit, the universal shade is becoming more and more known as a year-round wardrobe staple.

Here’s how to rock wearing all black this summer (without the whole melting thing):

Image: Nordstrom

1. Choose your fabrics wisely

Go with lighter-weight and sheer fabrics. “A floaty skirt of gauze or silk ‘lightens up’ the impact of inky black and doesn’t look as heavy,” says fashion expert Dianne M. Daniels. “Remember to keep the fabric opaque enough that you don’t sacrifice your modesty, but not so heavy that there’s no chance of a breeze wafting by and keeping you cool.”

2. Jackets aren’t out of the question

If you’re madly in love with your vegan leather jacket and can’t part with it during the summer months, drape it over your shoulders instead, suggests fashion expert Mary Peffer. “This allows your arms and pits to breathe but still provides a polished look,” says Peffer.

Image: Free People

3. Cutouts are your friend

Wearing all black outfits that include cutouts or have an architectural feel will give your look a more casual vibe—plus insta-ventilation to keep you from sweating your tuchus off.

4. Wear airy shoes

“The majority of our body heat is held in our head and feet,” says Peffer. “Stay cool with open-toed sandals and heels.”

Image: Nordstrom

5. Add texture

Including hits of texture within your all-black look—an embellishment here, a new fabric there—will keep your look fresh and not harsh.

6. Add intriguing accessories

Adding all-natural accessories to your ensemble, such as wood bangles, will give your look that earthy appeal we love about summer outfits.

7. Add a pattern

If wearing all black in the summer is something you need to work up to, get graphic with geometric patterns and shapes that include black, but that also include other colors to keep the look on the sunnier side, says Daniels, adding, “To avoid a ‘funeral’ look, use patterns to lighten up the overall vibe.” If Karlie Kloss can do it, so can you.

Are you a fan of wearing all black in the summer?

If your closet’s overflowing with items you never wear, here’s the 411 on creating the capsule wardrobe of your dreams.

When I open my overstuffed closet to try and find something to wear, it makes me feel like a country song. Why does fashion have to be so complicated? Oh, wait: It doesn’t! There’s this minimal-yet-stylish concept called a capsule wardrobe that’s making a splash, and it takes all the muss and fuss out of getting dressed in the morning. The secret? Cutting the crap of course.

Here’s all you need to know about capsule wardrobes—and how to create a killer one of your very own:

1. What is this capsule wardrobe you speak of?

A capsule wardrobe is essentially a streamlined collection of garments based on your own personal style—usually consisting of anywhere from 10 to 37 items, depending on how daring you are. These pieces are timeless, versatile, built to last, and some can be transitioned from season to season. They can be easily mixed and matched to create oodles of outfit choices for your fine self.

2. What are the benefits of a capsule wardrobe?

Honing in on your personal style will save you time, money and energy that you can put toward the things that really matter to you (and I’m assuming spending half the day scowling in front of the mirror isn’t one of them). Plus, you’ll never hear yourself whine about having nothing to wear ever again. Like, ever.

3. What are the steps involved in creating a capsule wardrobe?

STEP ONE:
Pick a number, any number: Based on your lifestyle, estimate the magic number of pieces you’ll need for your capsule wardrobe and try to stick within that range. Once you have your pieces pared down, this will become the (rough) number you carry with you from season to season.

Items to include in your capsule collection: Tops, bottoms, shoes, dresses and outerwear. Don’t include things like workout clothes, accessories, socks and undies, pyjamas, or anything that’s super duper formal.

STEP TWO:
Take everything out of your closet (and I mean everything). Lay out all your pieces so you can clearly see everything you own.

STEP THREE:
Organize your pieces into four piles: Yes, No, Maybe, Seasonal.

Yes items are the items you’re madly in love with. They’re perfect for your bod and your lifestyle. You feel like Beyoncé wearing them. On a scale of one to 10, they’re a 75. These items go back in your closet pronto.

No items get donated, swapped, given to a friend or sold to fund the blanks you may need to fill in your capsule wardrobe.

Maybe items are the ones that don’t feel quite right yet you’re afraid to get rid of them. Simply set these aside or store them for later (but do not put them back in your closet). Give yourself a deadline—for example, if you don’t wear or even look at your maybe pile by the end of the season, you’ll sell or donate them.

Seasonal items are also items you love, but don’t fit the season you’re currently creating a capsule wardrobe for. Store these items until the season they’re meant for, such as winter coats and sweaters.

STEP FOUR:
Live with your current capsule wardrobe for a little while to get a sense of what might be missing from it, then shop for those pieces.

STEP FIVE:
Allow your capsule wardrobe to evolve. As you go along, tweak it as you see fit until it’s just right. (In other words, by the time you’re done, make sure every item on a scale of one to 10 is a 75.)

4. How do I update my capsule wardrobe at the end of the season?

Transfer any items that can be used the following season too, and take any pieces out of storage you’ve saved for the upcoming season. Again, wear your updated capsule wardrobe for a while and see if there are any blanks that need to be filled, or duds you need to swap out with something different.

You’ll do this for every season until you have a capsule wardrobe for each one. And when a season comes back around, for every new item you want to add, get rid of one.

The trick to the entire process is to go with your gut. There are so many rules attached to what women “should” and “shouldn’t” have in their closets that we’ve lost sight of our own personal style. This process will help you create your own rules—and look amazing to boot.

And if you’re worried about getting lost or overwhelmed during the process, don’t fret: Caroline Rector of Unfancy is the grand poobah of the capsule wardrobe, and you can go here to score her incredibly wonderful (and incredibly free) wardrobe planner.

Are you considering putting together a capsule wardrobe—or have you already taken the plunge?

How to accessorize your little black dress for any occasion.

You can’t own a little black dress without searching for a training manual on how to accessorize it. After all, it’s the most versatile piece in your wardrobe – each time you wear it, you can make it look new again, all by swapping your accessories.

Here’s how to accessorize your LBD 8 different ways and maximize its potential:

1. Think in opposites

The more complicated the design of your dress, the simpler your accessories should be – and vice versa. You don’t want to look too blah or too busy.

2. Pump up the volume

On your hair, that is. If you’re not big on jewelry, let your tresses be the accessory. Go with big waves a la JLo for a night out with the girls, or a stunning beehive a la Adele for a work-related cocktail party.

3. Add a pair of tights

If you’re going to a more casual shindig, you can dress down your LBD with a pair of creative tights, such as polka dots or plaid.

4. Party on with power prints

Pair your little black dress with a patterned clutch that has as much personality as you do, such as a chevron pattern in a striking shade.

5. Make a statement

Statement necklaces are a foolproof way to kick your LBD up a notch (or seven). I mean, who ever got anywhere in life being subtle? A dramatic necklace will transform your outfit into a showstopper.

6. Swing from the chandelier

Okay not really, but if you’re going for a lux, sophisticated look, a jaw-dropping pair of chandelier earrings will do the trick and then some. In fact, it’s not likely you’ll need to accessorize any further.

7. Edge it up

Edge up an ultra-feminine dress with futuristic-looking accessories, such as an intense bib necklace or a geometric cuff.

8. Go bold

If you’re going to pair a color with your LBD, make it a high-voltage one, like fuchsia or emerald. And whether that color’s added in the form of sky high heels or a unique clutch is totally up to you.

How to layer clothes so you’re not left out in the cold this fall. (See what I did there?)

Fall is the best worst season ever, isn’t it? It’s beautiful, it’s soothing, it’s bold – but when it comes to the weather, it really needs to make up its mind already. I mean, if you want to be warm, then great – our summer duds can last just a teensy bit longer. If you want to be cold, we can deal with that too – we are women, after all. But as it stands, I have to take my sweater on and off so many times in a day my biceps are starting to look like Mr. Clean’s. Throw us a bone already, will you?

Since we already know that’s never going to happen (pffft!), we’re going to have to take matters into our own hands. By learning how to layer clothes, we won’t have to spend the fall feeling like menopause has come 20 years too soon.

Here are 9 fashion hacks on how to layer clothes (you know, minus all the bulk):

1. Play with proportions

If you want a balanced layered look, the key is mixing proportions. For example, short with long or fitted with loose: A short sweater layered over a long tank, or a fitted tank layered under a chunky knit sweater. Really, the combinations are endless. Think in opposites, and you’ll find your layered looks will come together quickly.

2. Simplify your color palette and focus on texture instead

Layering can be overwhelming, especially when trying to mix colors and prints. Since fall tends to be more about soothing neutrals, try layering different textures instead. It’ll help take the pressure off while giving your look a cozy, yet bold feel.

3. Start with a dress

How to layer clothes depends on the weather in your area, but no matter where you live you really can’t go wrong with thin layers. For example, wearing a dress with pants underneath is kind of a big deal this season. Sweater dresses with tights are also a fun staple to accessorize, and are great for work and play.

4. Punch your neutrals (you know, with color)

I’m a big fan of keeping my fall clothes simple in color, then BAM – adding a bold accessory, like a yellow handbag or red shoes. This especially comes in handy when you’ve been procrastinating on your laundry, since everything always goes together no matter the season. Give simple outfits a touch of the unexpected, and you’ll never run out of things to wear.

5. Stock up on basics

Basic tees, cardigans, button-up shirts and tights tend to be the glue that hold your layered outfit together. They’re super easy to toss on underneath your textured or patterned pieces.

6. Knits? Bring. It. On.

Cardigans, sweaters and vests are your BFFs in the layering department. If you’re wearing a generally basic outfit, you can layer on funky patterns and bold textures with ease. There’s nothing better than looking like it took you forever to get ready in the morning, when really it only took 10 minutes. (Hey, a girl can dream, can’t she?)

7. Expand your jacket collection

You don’t want to layer to the point of looking homeless, and this is where light jackets come into play: When they’re made of canvas or other light fabrics, jackets allow breathing room amongst your layers, while giving your outfit a touch of structure.

8. Don’t forget: Accessories are a layer too

Scarves shouldn’t be the only trick up your sleeve: Chunky earrings, statement necklaces, bangles, even gloves all add more movement to your outfit and make for a great finishing touch.

9. Don’t give up on your summer duds just yet

How to layer clothes in the fall doesn’t mean you have to ditch your summer style the second you see a brown leaf. Layer your fave summer shorts with a pair of tights and a bold pair of ankle booties. Throw a blazer over top of a vintage tee or a long sleeve shirt under it. The sky’s the limit, and makes your wardrobe that much more versatile.

Genius fashion tips you should never be without. Like, ever.

The world of fashion is amazing, but can be very overwhelming – especially when fashion mishaps happen, like water stains on your fave boots or your attempt at layering making you look like Joey Tribbiani (“Could I be wearing any more clothes?”). To make your life easier, we’ve compiled a list of fashion tips and tricks to make you feel more fashionable – and less frazzled.

Here are 51 fashion tips that will leave you armed and fabulous:

1. Want longer-looking legs? Wear shoes with a pointed tip.

2. To prevent runs in your tights, spray them with hairspray.

3. Few things are worse than dropping an earring back. Put a stocking over your vacuum cleaner’s hose to find it in a snap.

4. Dry hand-washed clothing using a salad spinner.

5. Because jeans always shrink in length when they’re washed, make sure you wash them twice before getting them hemmed.

6. To look uber-chic while still showing some skin, wear shorts or a miniskirt and cover up on top. If you’re wearing a skimpy top, opt for full coverage on the bottom.

7. Naturally waterproof your canvas shoes with beeswax: Simply rub them with it and set using a blow-dryer.

8. Remove smells from vintage clothing by spritzing them with a mix of one part vodka and two parts water.

9. Choose necklaces based on the necklines you wear most often:

Image: Polyvore

10. To remove those pesky yellow sweat stains from your white shirts, spray the affected areas with lemon juice before putting them in the washing machine.

11. Unless they’re cropped or tapered, your pants should just graze the tops of your shoes and be 1/2 inch to 3/4 inches off the floor.

12. Remove deodorant stains with baby wipes.

13. Use a hair straightener to iron your collar.

14. Shopping for a pencil skirt? It should just hit at the top of your knee – any lower and it’ll make your legs look shorter.

15. Make your hair look longer and fuller by using two ponytails on top of each other. Wrap a one-inch section of hair around both elastics and pin them in place.

16. Your every day bras should be replaced every three to six months, since this is around the time they lose their elasticity and support.

17. Avoid stretching the collars of your shirts by putting the hangers in from the bottom instead of the top.

18. Remove a red wine stain by gently blotting it with a white wine-soaked cloth.

19. Drying your hair with a t-shirt instead of a towel is much gentler on your hair: It helps prevent hair shaft damage and potential frizziness.

20. Master the art of making any jeans look like skinny jeans:

Image: Listotic

21. Make your next closet detox a breeze: To see which clothes you never wear, turn all your hangers in the same direction. As you bust out clothes to wear, hang them back up with the hanger facing the other way. Afterward, get rid of the clothes that are still hanging the original way.

22. Break in your new kicks by putting them on with socks and blasting your feet with your hairdryer on the hot setting.

23. V-neck tops make your torso look longer.

24. To maintain the wash of your jeans, add 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar to the final rinse cycle during your next wash.

25. Accidentally spritz yourself with too much perfume? Use an unscented, oil-based makeup remover to wipe off the excess.

26. Looking to switch things up in seconds? Swap your statement necklace for a scarf.

27. If you can fit two fingers under your bra band comfortably, then it fits. If you can’t, your bra’s probably too tight.

28. Paint clear nail polish on your silver jewelry so it doesn’t turn your skin green.

29. Give your t-shirts that vintage-soft feel by leaving them in salt water (4 cups of water and 1/2 cup of salt) for a few days, then wash as per usual.

30. Make your legs look longer by wearing nude pumps.

31. Use the tabs from pop cans to create a double-hanger:

Image: Idea Bottle

32. Get scratches out of leather bags by rubbing moisturizer into the scratch using a Q-tip.

33. Keep your diamonds sparkling with liquid dishwashing soap and a toothbrush.

34. If your blush breaks in your purse, use pre-moistened makeup removing wipes to clean up the loose powder in no time.

35. When your bobby pins give you ‘tude, place them on a paper towel and spritz them with hairspray to make them stay put.

36. How to create the perfect top knot: Rake your fave texturizer through your whole hairline. Flip your hair upside down to get your ponytail as high as possible. Once gathered, flip upright and look at the ceiling (this makes the hair-smoothing process a lot easier). Once your ponytail is in place, wrap your hair around the base and secure with four or five large bobby pins.

37. Learn how to unshrink your clothes (yes, it’s a thing):

Get the DIY here.

Image: One Good Thing

38. For insta-variety, make sure your closet is stocked with the magic seven: A little black dress, a blazer, great-fitting jeans, a classic pump, a classic handbag, a leather jacket and a ballet flat.

39. To create a fuss-free cuffed sleeve, keep the top button of your shirt buttoned while you roll.

40. Oil stain in your purse? No need to fret! Just coat the mark with baby powder and let it sit overnight.

41. If you don’t feel like trying on a dress but want to see where the hem will hit, line up the shoulder seam to your shoulder bone, not your collarbone.

42. The easiest way to give your closet a facelift: Buy the same hangers for everything. Everything.

43. If your outfit’s feeling a little blasé, inject it with a bold color by matching your bag, coat and lips. Bam!

44. To clean dirt off suede, remove the crust from a piece of bread and let it go stale. Rub the dirt and stains with the edge of the stale bread and watch them disappear!

45. To get rid of water marks on your leather boots, add a few drops of vinegar to a bowl of cold water and scrub with a soft bristle brush. Let them dry overnight.

46. Say sayonara to mascara smudges for good: Hold a business card behind your lashes as you apply.

47. When layering, wear a form-fitting tank between your button-up shirt and sweater to keep your mid-secton from looking frumpy.

48. Coral is everything. It’s the color that complements all of us and is about as timeless as it gets. Always make sure you have a coral blush, lipstick, gloss and nail polish in your beauty arsenal.

49. Master the right way to fold your t-shirts:

Image: Darkroom and Dearly

50. Always be prepared: When you’re shopping for something specific, such as a gorg dress for a first date dress or other special occasion, bring the shoes and wear the undergarments you want to wear with it.

51. To make sure your lashes are always clump-free, keep a small, clean mascara wand on hand to comb through your lashes just before they dry. Flaw. Less.

Remember how ’90s fashion was the epitome of bold prints blended together in a beautiful chaos?

Nineties fashion was all about carelessness and comfort, but careless doesn’t have to mean sloppy. From mixing florals and plaids to going all out Courtney Love, here are 9 ways to mix and match prints while still looking dressed to the ’90s (see what I did there?):

1. Go big or go home

Nineties fashion wasn’t about being shy. If you rummage through your closet and want to throw together pink polka dots and a masculine stripe – go for it! Mixing prints is all about self-expression. The more outrageous, the better (and it pretty much makes laundry day a breeze!).

2. Mix a large print with a small print

While the whole point to mixing patterns is to go for broke in the self-expression department, you don’t want your prints to fight for all the attention and leave you in the dust. You wear your clothes, not the other way around. Try mixing a larger print (for example, a plaid) with a smaller print (perhaps a floral) to prevent clashing.

3. Go floral from H2T

If you’re a fan of Blossom Russo, you likely want to try her oh-so-charming H2T floral look – but don’t want to look like you shot your couch. Luckily, balancing this old-school ’90s fashion trend is an easy fix: Choose floral pieces that have a structured, modern silhouette, and minimize the accessories – let your prints be the accessory. Finish off the look with a neutral pump and strut your stuff.

4. Throw in a texture

Don’t forget about patterned textures, like lace or polka dot tights and printed over-the-knee socks. If you’re just as shy about mixing prints now as you were in the ’90s, it’s an easy way to break into the trend without overwhelming yourself.

5. When in doubt, go with plaid

Fact: Plaid is the best. It can be tomboy. It can be feminine. It can be downright adorable. It’s also perfect for layering – and with fall just around the corner, plaid will keep you warm and stylish. A plaid down vest plus a fitted plaid boyfriend shirt equals a stylish lumberjack.

6. Pair with grown-up accessories

Wear your ’90s fashion inspired prints and pair them with grown-up accessories. For example, match your top, shoes or clutch to one of the colors in your print. Or, if your office is into the whole casual Friday thing, wear a fun print with a serious one as if to say, “I’m professional, but I also know how to party.” (And when it comes to adding a scrunchie into the mix, proceed with caution.)

7. Play with proportion

Choose a type of print for your ’90s fashion statement – for example, stripes – and play with proportions. Pair a thick-striped top with a thin-striped pant, or big plaid and small plaid. The sky’s the limit! Ironically, the more your prints don’t match, the more they do.

8. Mix loud and neutral

If you’re a print-mixing newbie or want to wear the trend to an otherwise conservative event, try mixing a metallic or neon print with a simple neutral. Give one print the starring role and the other a nod for best supporting print.

9. Wear with confidence

When it comes to this ’90s fashion trend, there really are no rules, only suggestions. As long as you strut around confidently in your uber-unique ensemble (a la the Fresh Prince) you’ll look fabulous. The worst thing you can do is take the plunge and wear a bold, loud, wonderfully mismatched outfit – and then not leave the house. Have fun, and enjoy your second childhood with pride.

Now, the real question: Who’s up for a little Macarena? Anyone?

Which ’90s fashion flashbacks have made a comeback in your closet?

How to wear pink clothing without looking like you’re on your way to a ballet recital… that you’re starring in.

When it comes to pink clothing, I’m a total hypocrite. I constantly go on about how much I love the color, yet you won’t find one stitch of pink clothing in my wardrobe. I’ve always attributed the color pink to being girly, vibrant and outgoing… all things I’m not, so it goes without saying I’m a tad concerned about taking the plunge. It’d basically be like putting Elle Woods’ clothing on Darlene from “Roseanne.”

That being said, I’ve decided to start small and work my way up: Pink jewelry, pink hair accessories, pink office supplies – I’m almost ready to buy pink socks. Almost. Where are you on the spectrum? If you’d like to think pink but have no idea where to start, here are 9 grown-up ways to wear pink clothing:

1. Mix with menswear
No matter how frilly the pink clothing you choose, you can easily edge it up by accenting with menswear, such as a fitted blazer or tailored pant. If you’re in the mood to go bold, make a sophisticated statement with pink menswear (an oddly impressive combination).

2. It’s all in the shade
Choose your shade of pink based on the outing: For the office, go for a more muted shade (such as blush or peach), and leave anything bubblegum-esque for your night out with the girls. If you want to make a bold statement but don’t want to look too Madonna-circa-1980s, take a bright coral or magenta for a spin.

3. Add some leather
As they say on “Project Runway”, the strength of leather combined with the daintiness of pink will give your outfit a “juxtaposition between hard and soft.” For example, a leather jacket over a pink minidress takes away the Zooey Deschanel factor that only Zooey Deschanel can get away with. Or depending on where you work, a leather pencil skirt with a pink blouse (me-ow!).

4. Try it with a print
If you’re worried wearing pink clothing is going to make you look juvenile, then use the color to bring some character to a “serious” or structured print. The print will make the pink aspect of your outfit look more adult, while the pink will add whimsy to what could otherwise end up being an intimidating outfit.

5. Choose the right cut
Especially when opting for a crazy-bold piece of pink clothing (fuscia, anyone?), make sure it’s well-tailored. No matter how bright the color, when the piece is fitted and flatters your body, it reads stylish and polished.

6. Wear classic silhouettes
Infuse pink throughout your common staples, such as your casual tanks and tees – swap some of those neutrals with the shades of pink you love most. The pop of color will be a fun change of pace from your usual whites, blacks and greys. (Yawn, am I right?)

7. Go big or go home
Let’s face it: There are days when you just want to go full-on princess! I say, if the hints of pink aren’t cutting it for you, then choose an occasion where you can take pink clothing for a spin the way you’ve always wanted to. You might find there’s a whole new you underneath all of those muted colors!

8. Wear a pink coat
If you can’t quite commit to pink clothing (yet), why not try a pink coat? It’s a great way to test the waters to see if you can make pink work. If you’re not feeling it, you can simply take off your coat and go back to your regularly scheduled programming. Let’s face it though: You’ll rock the pink coat and then wonder what all the fuss was about.

9. Use pink as an accent
If you’re like me and need some time to work your way up to pink clothing, start with pink accessories: A clutch or purse, a cute pair of pumps, even a keychain if you’re really desperate. It’s a great way to start adding the color to your wardrobe without breaking the bank.

Do you know the best jeans for your bod – or just think you do?

I’ve never actually stopped to think about what makes a great pair of jeans. When I go shopping, I tend to focus on my waist size and leg length – both of which are ballpark figures – and once I hit the change room with what I believe to be the best jeans, I freeze… since, you know, I have no idea what it even means.

Have you been wearing the best jeans for your body type? To help you find out, we caught up with Moniqua Plante, top LA fit model, who’s worked with such ah-mazing clients as True Religion, Lucky Brand Jeans, Forever 21 and Bebe Studio. (There are even Tukatech & Alva mannequins of her bod!)

Here’s what you need to keep in mind during your hunt for the best jeans:

1. Enjoy experimenting
“The biggest piece of advice I can give is don’t be afraid of trying on a few different sizes,” says Plante. “We’re socialized to believe that size is everything. Meanwhile, no one’s looking at the label inside your jeans, they’re looking at your cute butt on the outside.” Plus, when jeans are mass-produced, sizing will always vary slightly, so make sure to bring your go-to size, one size up and one size down to the change room.

2. Know what to look for
“When you try on jeans, they should feel a little tight, but not like sausage casing,” says Plante. “Denim will grow as you wear it. I always do a few squats and knee bends in the dressing room to get a feel for how the denim moves and to see how quickly it stretches out.”

Once you’re checking yourself out in the mirror, here are three important areas to pay attention to:

If the mid-thigh area is too tight (the area between your upper thigh and knee on the back of your leg), you’ll end up with extra fabric above the back knee and serious creases on your back thigh. Plante calls this extra fabric fold behind the knee “knee buckets.”

If you have a muscular calf area, the stretchier the jean, the better. You don’t want your calves to seem larger, so try a slight boot cut to avoid emphasizing this area. This will help to balance out your figure.

Are they bootylicious enough? Use the back pockets as your guide: You want to make sure they’re not too big and not too small. If you’ve got a big booty, small pockets will make it look bigger. If it’s small a larger pocket will help fill you out. If your rear’s flatter, look for pockets with a flap or embellishment of some sort to accentuate all you have to offer.

3. Know your body type
“There are a number of body types,” says Plante, “But you probably fall under one of the main five.” Here are her recommendations for each:

Curvy
Balanced upper + lower body with a slim waist.

“You want to accentuate your awesome curves without making yourself look fuller than you are,” says Plante. Skinny jeans are ah-mazing for this body shape. If you’re not a fan of skinny jeans, try a pair of boot-cut or flared jeans with a low- to mid-rise waist to even out your curvy hips and booty. Wider-legged styles will also look fabulous on you. Go for denim with a bit of stretch for extra comfiness.

Straight
Athletic build, straight up and down without a defined waist.

“Lower-rise jeans will create the illusion of a defined wasiteline,” says Plante. The best jeans for this figure are bootcut or slightly flared. Make sure they’re relaxed around the calves and ankles, but fitted around your hips and booty. Steer clear of higher-wasted styles, as they will add too much width to your lower body.

Triangular
Wider shoulders/larger boobs with a slim booty and thighs.

A wider leg will help balance out your chest so you don’t appear top-heavy. “A lighter wash denim will also draw the eye downward and away from your chest,” says Plante. “Go for low-rise, boot-cut or wide leg jeans to achieve the effect.”

Apple
Slim shoulders + hips, wider midsection.

Low-rise jeans will emphasize your fuller middle and give you a muffin top (dun dun dunnn!). “I recommend mid-rise jeans with a boot-cut or slightly flared silhouette,” says Plante. A straight leg style will show off your lean legs, and if you love skinny jeans, go for it! Just make sure you choose a flattering, flowy top that helps hide the tummy.

Pear
Wider hips + thighs with narrow shoulders + bust.

“The most important thing is to look for a style that will elongate your legs,” says Plante. “I caution against skinny jeans because they’ll emphasize your fuller lower regions, as well as super high-waisted jeans, which will make your legs look shorter.” Give mid-rise, straight leg or bootcut styles a try – with a dark wash that will flatter your shape.
