Alright, ladies. If you can, you’ll want to visit the New Museum in New York to take a long stroll through its female-centric exhibitions.

The DKNY and New Museum collaboration was thought up to expose the world to the amazing works female artists create.

Female artists featured

The showcase, titled The New Women’s Project, features the work of five female artists: Nicole Eisenmen, a French painter; Goshka Macuga, a London-based Polish installation artist; Andra Ursuta, a Romanian sculptor; Beatriz Santiago Muñoz, a Puerto Rican photographer; and Cally Spooner, a performance artist. Massimiliano Gioni, artistic director of the museum, will oversee the shows, which began May 4. This is the first solo show for each of the women.

“When we planned these exhibitions, we simply sought to celebrate some of the greatest artists of today, regardless of their gender, and yet our choices attracted attention,” Gioni says.

“Clearly there are still glass ceilings to be shattered, and we are thrilled to continue to do so with DKNY’s partnership.”

And according to Lisa Phillips, the New Museum’s director, DKNY will continue to be involved with the New Museum’s Artemis Council, “a by-invitation membership initiative focused solely on supporting female artists,” The Wall Street Journal reports.

On the collaboration

Maxwell Osborne, DKNY’s co-creative-director, and Dao-Yi Chow, the brand’s other co-creative director, thought the New Museum, which was founded by Marcia Tucker in 1977, was a natural partner for this project because both DKNY and the Museum share a “vision of creativity and empowerment,” Dazed Digital reports.

“The New Women’s Project is particularly important to DKNY’s mission,” according to a statement made by Chow and Osborne.

“We are a brand that embodies a strong, intelligent, modern woman. Being able to magnify the New Museum’s ethos and support a forward-looking, dynamic New York institution is an honour. Our mutual dedication to the ideas and contributions of strong women is rooted in our founding visionaries.”

“Female empowerment is why the brand even exists,” Osborne adds.
